Just looked at the program fees.

    Annual Account Fee:
For Airpoints™ members who have not flown on a paid Air New Zealand flight for 12 months, an annual account fee of $30 will be charged. This fee will be reduced to $20 if you choose not to receive posted statements.

    • Thanks for highlighting this annual fee charge, HotKgon.

Yeah I got that nasty surprise - I joined this a few years back because there was a promo for free membership with my credit card! So I cancelled it for the next year :(

      Oh well.

But in regards to Air New Zealand - they are partnered with virgin so you can earn velocity (virgin australia's frequent flyer program) points for Air New Zealand flights. That is free membership for life and much more worth it.

    • Good catch.
      Thanks for that.

  • great. does anyone know how long you have before membership or the airpoints expire if there's no activity?

  • Another alternative for those looking to stash points is the Singapore Airlines Krisflyer program. It's free and handy for saving points earned on any Star Alliance carrier (Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air Canada, Lufthansa, United, US Airways, ANA, Air China etc.) Just a suggestion. :)

    • Just be aware of a few catches with Singapore's Krisflyer program. The qualification period starts when you JOIN not when your flight is. The required miles needed to gain status are high and Singapore are EXTREMELY tight with upgrades and free flights. There are far better programs among the Star Alliance airlines

      • With 1:1 redemption ratio from Amex MR points to Krisflyer, a return flight from SYD to SIN is only 46,750 points by online redemption. I think that is pretty good considering that I need 60,000 Velocity Rewards points for SYD to KUL on Malaysia Airlines (before they cancelled that arrangement).

I would be interested to know which other Star Alliance program is better.
