Bundles everywhere, only this one is missing the GPU :D

GPUs are elusive creatures that you can find in the wild on rare occasions or for the right price /s

    • Is this a deal ?
And is the power supply big enough for older GPUs like RX580 ?

  • @Rep, any specials on SSDs?
    Thanks

    • +3

Hi there, we will see what SSD deal we can offer. Already requested to our marketing/sales team.

  • REP need a special on MSI X570 TOMAHAWK (was $285 in your eBay store and you haven't sold a single one of them since the price hike even during 15% off codes, clearly you need to bring it down)

Some advice please - if anyone can:
My son has a MSI Z170A Krait Gaming Motherboard running an Intel i7 6700K CPU with a Thermaltake SMART RGB 700W 80 Plus PSU - he has been offered $325.00 as a trade in (sale) by a mate - should he take that and swap for this system? Benchmarking has this as slightly superior - but in my mind not enough to cover the cost/hassle of changing over

    • +2

I'm not confident enough to give you a solid yes or no… but I'd like to ask, what RAM is he running? What other components does his system have? I assume gaming is the most intensive work the PC does? What resolution monitor and framerate you looking at?

Short version: If you value your time in $$, then it's probably not worth the effort.
If you don't count labour, then strictly speaking it's probably worth the $75 in terms of upgrade value. That being said, you aren't likely to actually notice the expected small improvement in system performance.

      • Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz DDR4
        GPU: 980Ti (Liquid Cooled)
        Gaming Monitor: Benq Zowie RL2755
Secondary Monitor: Asus 1ms 27" something

Gaming: LoL - COD MW etc

Not I - but that is the components

        • Was going to mention you'd get more than $325 on ebay or gumtree..

          • @randomusername2017: Thanks - but it is for a mate of my son - don't feel right gouging - lol!

            • +1

@Sainter Dad: Maybe you and your sons mate should both get this package, and sell the old kit on Ebay for more than $325? Just an idea.

        K sku CPU.
        "Never overclocked".

        Not that I believe educated overclocking is a problem regardless;
But SUUUUUURE buddy, you chose to spend a extra on an unlocked SKU to not use it.

i too like to buy a turbo car, and make sure to never rev high in case the turbo spools up. /eyeroll.

        • Who negged this? and why?

The dude is literally saying he didn't do the thing you buy a K SKU for… (not the OP, the gumtree ad)

          • @MasterScythe: I negged it. Some K CPUs are same price than non K (check 10700kf and 10700 on eBay) and on top that the K Version has few MHz on top of the non K version.

            • @Dienk: That was absolutely not the case with the i7 6700K; which is the one in question here though; it was 10% more expensive for basically it's whole lifespan; and only 6.6% higher clocked, which was achievable with near 100% success by running 106Mhz BLCK.

          • +1

@MasterScythe: I'm one of those fools who buys unlocked CPUs and midrange motherboards thinking that I'll overclock them later on; once they begin to show their age. Problem is, by that time, I'm ready to upgrade the entire PC anyway.

Even now, I'm running a 5600X at stock.

            • @Heero: I'm in an i7 5820K, 5Ghz all cores.
              had it since launch day.

I keep wanting to upgrade, but not much can give me the single core 5GHZ+ target, without significantly slowing down when using all cores…

            • @Heero: Agree with Heero. There are plenty of people out in the world that spend money on things they don't need, and that they don't fully utilise…
That being said, whether or not you want to give the benefit of the doubt to someone selling on gumtree… I've been scammed on Gumtree…

              • @pronoun: It's specifically because he bothers to mention the thing (most) people buy a K SKU to do.
If he had of said nothing, OK, but nope, he's acknowledging he knows why he has a K.

To me it's the equivalent of "Locked diff, never skidded"

    • I upgraded from a 6700k after my motherboard gave up. Got $275 for the CPU alone on ebay. It's a noticable upgrade.

There are a few little perks of the modern AMD system, but the biggest one in that trade, would be the ability to budget-upgrade in the future.
The i7 6700k is basically end of life; It's a great CPU and will overclock to the MOON, but you can't add cores, and you can't add newer instruction sets.

Getting 'this package' will mean he's on the AM4 socket, which means he can go right the way up to a 5900X in a couple of years.
      CPU Cores 12, Threads 24.

      This is probably VERY significant;
we've reached an electrical limitation with processing speed, reliably mass producing chips above 5Ghz is (currently) impossible thanks to the speed electrons take to have an effect on an IC gate; plus travel time.
Because of the above, this means more and more and more programs, games, everything, is going to focus on parallel computing (more threads\more cores used) to gain 'speed' rather than the older 'higher clockspeed' thinking.

If I was in his shoes, I'd do the swap; not because this deal is inherently better, but because you end up at about the same performance, with a true future upgrade path, it's no longer a 'dead end'.

Just be sure you look up HOW to correctly configure an AMD system in regards to memory and fabric timings.
it's not hard to DIY if you're able to follow youtube guides and are just a LITTLE tech savvy.
It's really not hard AT ALL, but it's imperative that you lock that ram at 3200Mhz, and the Fabric at 1600Mhz to match.

Before the keyboard overclockers jump on me; yes faster is better, but the performance gains above 2600mhz start to significantly drop off.
3200Mhz is the point where you've still gained 'whole percents' worth of performance, without needing to walk the knife edge of stability, because to most people, RAM tuning is truly the devil, wrapped in black arts and 'gut feelings'.

      Also;
those 980Ti's were rad for getting a free 7% or so performance.
Might want to look into the default OC tools of the driver (they're VERY limited to remain safe); most of the 980 lineup was able to 'max out' the default drivers OC tool.

      • Thank you very much - this is very informative - I was not thinking of future upgrade

      • You are a very smart and generous person. Thanks for the free tip.

i dont think it's worth the jump to this.

plus this PSU here is right on the bottom of the pile - trash.

      • What problems have you experienced with the CX series?

one way to flog a crappy PSU
