Big warning for anyone seriously interested in this. Bought a P40 Pro for the wife a few weeks ago and tried about 3 different techniques for running Google apps. Two of the methods runs the apps virtualised which is OK, if you like looking at ads when you launch any of the virtualised apps. Plus there is an issue where they occasionally lose data connectivity and you can't fix it by restarting services or force closing apps.

The "native" method requires you to downgrade your phone which is an absolute PITA. Once you eventually get it done the actual method of installing Google apps is extremely hacky and you will get spammed with certification warning from Google Play Services until you disable notifications. Also Google Maps just doesn't work, it force closes whenever you open it.

Coming from the P30 Pro to the P40 Pro, 100% would not recommend anyone to buy this phone if they rely on Google apps

Edit: Didn't mean to neg, sorry OP. Can't work out how to undo it

If you want to undo it, just click on 'votes' at the top, and the "⛔" sign next to your name in the list.

I did a native way on 2 P40Pro, got around the warning thing.

It was annoying but it works eventually. You need to keep trying.

      • Would be sick of this

Bottom line is GMS works with all the effort.
It shouldn't be banned by US.
          Just work around it.

          • @Panpanw: Hey there, glad to see you've had better luck. Does Google maps work for you? If so, which base firmware are you using? I would reflash again if it means the wife can use Google maps agaian

          • @Panpanw: Main thing I had issues with was google pay

I might get neg for this. However, I don’t understand what would be a compelling use case to purchase a Huawei phone in 2021. Even on this plan, I would rather get the same $99 plan from the good guys and get the $700 gift card to buy a phone of my choosing instead.

I understand that you don't understand. Some value $700 gift card and some may value a Huawei phone, it's just personal preference.

Such a shame about the GMS and the work arounds that comes with it, still rocking a Mate 20 Pro and it's miles ahead on Samsung when it comes to almost two day battery, camera lens, OLED screen, latest EMUI 11 and free six month warranty extension on it ! pretty impressive for $600

Just realize my dji drone ap update on Huawei ap gallery, was a surprise for me as I hardly use Huawei gallery.

Why so much hassle with the simple setup. I'd pass. I know they have some amazing hardware specs. Whats' the point if I can't get basic things right.

  • Those workarounds can cost your battery life significantly, since they are not optimized

  • you can also opt for 700 GC at both GG & JB
