[VIC] Telstra Lite Smart $7, Alcatel U3 $7, Telstra 4GX Smart $8, and More @ BIG W Eastland

220

Edit: After catching up on OzB today, I feel obliged to make note that you can use these to ring all your friends.

The long awaited follow up to my last phone clearance deal at Big W Eastland (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359032 for the lulz)

They got a few different phones there, I got one of these 3 each, there's some other ones marked down that will almost certainly make for a better experience, but for 7 bucks a pop, I'll have fun shoving Viber / Whatsapp on there and using them as walkie talkies on the weekend with the kiddo at least.

SIMs are long dead, at least on the 3 I bought, and crossed out. Some other ones might still have credit mind you.

I'm not gonna bother putting the specs, we all know they're old shit, but never know, could repurpose into a dash cam, car media player, walkie talkie, idk a spare camera to keep in the glove box, whatever. I believe I've written 10 words.

There was apparently dozens of them in the back, have at it.

So cheap. Almost tempted then I realised I have a bunch of crappy devices sitting in the drawer.

Unless you had a very specific need for a slow device, it's going to be a world of pain trying to do anything with those phones

    • The problem will be that many of us have old phones we dont use that are say around $75 that really dont even bare comparison.

One of my worst phones is a Umidigi A5 and I think that's 4gb/32 or 64gb rom, 8 core MTK etc, fhd and its usable.

These phones are really ready to throw away right now given they are either 3g only or have extremely limited specs. I've googled and found all three and its worth it for a laugh.

As disposable Mp3 players where the SD card is worth more than the phone then yes you can do that. The 4GX may work as a grandparents phone but many older folks know what's up these days and wont tolerate trash.

so for an extra $1 it appears that the 4gx smart is a better buy?

  • Interested to know if anyone managed to repurpose an old phone into a dash cam.

    • +1

I've done it before. Not a great solution because if you leave it on your dash the battery will explode in summer, or a junkie will break into your car to steal a worthless phone.

      • better to remove the camera and put it in a enclosure (print it?) rather than use whole device.

        • +3

When a decent dash cam is $100, why would you?

          • @spackbace: I would never. I am heavily promoting the Tesla purely because it has the sentry. Sightly more than $100 though. :) :)

  • Awesome find OP and perfect timing! Grandma's phone shat itself over the weekend and needs a cheap replacement haha

Would these type of phones be locked to Telstra? or can I BYO post-paid sim from another provider?
