Will never play this game but hey, if I didn’t get something when it was free I would need to turn in my OzBargain license

    • +19

      This is the way.

    • +2

      A true blue ozbargainer.

    • +7

I still haven't downloaded the Epic Launcher but I make sure to add the free games every week

      • Just use browser.

        • +1

Yeah I add them to my account through the browser but haven't reached the stage where I install the launcher to download the games, lol

What's a 2K Sports game got to do with EA?

    • +9

To be fair, I assumed it was an EA game too.

    • +3

Yup. I'm confused with the EA and 2k part too…

    • +11

My bad. I think I just seen micro-transaction complaints and brain went straight to EA. I'll fix the description.

      • +10

haha to be fair 2K Sports have become just as bad if not worse than EA Sports

  • +11

Should always be free, they make enough from microtransactions

  • +13

Played 2k11 Michael Jordan edition and 2k21 side by side. Prefer the old way. The best review I've had of this latest edition is that it's a great "basketball themed gambling simulator". Still free is free. Thank you.

    • +7

I think 2k12 was the peak of the series, the last 5 years have seen year over year declines in the gameplay and increases in the gambling/microtransactions

  • -2

Moment when we get FIFA on epic it's gonna be game over for all the other stores.

    • +1

FIFA is on Game Pass fwiw

  • +19

    In before Lysander salt

    • Haha. To be fair, there is not much evidence at this point. The OP didn't even link their source…

In any case, I've set the Ozbargain reminder.

  • +7

People complain and comment on the micro transactions but you dont have to spend any money if you dont want to. These are still great games to just play through normally and not have to level up your player etc.

They make heaps of money on micro transactions and a lot of people enjoy that side of the game but ive been playing career mode and season mode and its good fun - dont have to spend any additional money

    • +16

This is not a great game.

      • +3

Well i enjoyed it - haven't played a 2K game for 3-4 years and it felt fresh, especially on next gen, visuals were great.

        • +11

Each to their own. I've been playing since 99. The last 5 or so years with no competition has left it to nothing more than roster updates and annoying control tweaks that get fixed the following year.

          • +1

@Pootie Tang: I agree, this is what happens when you kill your direct competitor (EA) and you have nothing to compete with anymore.

        • +1

My son has been playing it for years. I think he ended up with this version as well. Problem is, 2K decided that next gen version doesn't apply to the PC version!

So, it's basically the same game as previously.

Why in the hell did they decide to go "Nope, PC gets the old version again"

So crap, and shows how little they care about the PC market for this game

        • -2

You're playing on next generation already????? Are you from the future?

    • +3

I don't particularly disagree with you, the game(play) is great for the most part, especially for some couch multiplayer fun, but in saying that I still find it unacceptable just how far down the rabbit hole they've gone. You can barely escape a menu without mention of Virtual Currency and prior their career modes have been much less susceptible to the VC side of things than in the last 5 or so seasons, it's pretty disgusting, not to mention launching a "next-gen" version of the game for more money when other companies are giving out the "upgraded" versions free of charge. For what is essentially minor adjustments + roster changes year on year you definitely have the right idea though by skipping a few seasons.

    • Obviously you don't have to but it takes an unnecessarily long amount of time to level up a player to 85+ and you better make sure you chose right because there's no VC refunds.

  • Does one need a game pad or joystick to play this game?

    • +1

Really needs something like an xbox controller

    • +2

You can play with just a keyboard, but it's not optimal.

  • +5

Mostly Negative (20,962 reviews) on Steam, nuts lol

    • +8

In isolation it's a reasonable game, it just gets review bombed because of microtransactions and the fact it's virtually no different to 2K20

  • +6

Crap game. Awful shooting mechanics. I love watching NBA games and really enjoyed the old(er) iterations of 2K.
Now it seems impossible to just grab your controller have a quick game for enjoyment. They've screwed the ability to just play the game for fun. My Career player is utterly hopeless and a total grind.
Really hope EA come back and do another version of NBA. They're last offering (IMO) was far superior to 2k

  • +4

Don't bother the game (every NBA2K since like 2018) has been deliberately made almost unplayable in order to make VC basically mandatory to really play.

    • +2

      Vince Carter?

    • Vice chairman??

  • weeeew thanks mate!

  • +1

Sure they've made tweaks to the game over the years, but I can still see a lot of the same roboticness of the player animations going alllllll the way back to 2K6. 2K10-12 was my peak of the series. It started losing its shine from 2K13 - onward (last one I paid for, managed to get 15, 16, 17, 19, and 20 for free… or in the case of 20 for less than $4).

    • Couldn't agree more mate, loved the 2K11 Jordan edition, the last 2K I bought was 17.
It felt as if it was just the same game with roster updates.
I hear that past 17 you pretty much had to pay to be somewhat competitive otherwise you would have to grind and wouldn't even get your MyCareer player maxed out by the release of the next game

How is a "leak" a deal? It's not even confirmed.

    • This. Previous unconfirmed deals have been unpublished. Not sure whats so special about this one.

    • Yeah surprised this post is still up considering the hate dealbot received in the past for similar posts (that were later confirmed).

Exact same deal on Cheapies was taken down earlier today.

      • Exact same deal on Cheapies was taken down earlier today.

What was removed on Cheapies was not the same, the title (or description) did not contain any game, which is why it was removed:

        Title:

[PC] Free - Mystery Game @ Epic Games (Insufficient details for upcoming deal)

        Description:

Another Mystery game giveaway, usually it's something big. Hopping it will something big again.

        As per the guidelines

Deal posts that reference an upcoming sale or deal without information about any specific offer, or have an unknown/indefinite start date may be unpublished.

        • I stand corrected.

      • It is most likely this game. Been waiting for it to hit the Epic systems to confirm.

I would say the freebies this time aren’t of the same standard as last year but each to their own.

  • Probably won't play this, thought it might be Assassins Creed Odyssey. Countdown timer at Fanatical is in sync with Epic games store timer, one finishes the same time the other one (Epic) opens up. Probably just a coincidence.

  • +1

Ok stupid question from someone who hasn't played one of these sports games since about 2006: Is there any kind of casual mode against AI that is playable with some prospect of winning without spending money? I really don't give a damn about career mode or multiplayer. (At most if it was possible I'd want to play with my kids). Purely want to casually play if I bother. Mostly single player AI.

    • +4

Yeah its still a great game without spending money on micro transactions. I play 1 v 1 with friends offline all the time.

    • +1

Wouldn't bother mate. I found it really hard to play compared to EA's NBA and far more difficult than earlier 2018/19 versions by 2K..

      • Did you turn off the BS new shooting mechanics? It's meant to be great once you master it, but it's a real bitch to get a hang of

    • There's a "Play Now" function where you can just play it, and the MyTeam stuff is perfectly playable without throwing money at it.

    • +1

I pretty much play exclusively vs AI and I enjoy playing and have never spent a cent beyond initial purchase price (and I usually wait for $5 ish sales anw). Honestly, there is only really one mode (MyTeam) that is really egregiously microtransaction littered. The rest of the game is perfectly fun without needing to spend any money, including the career mode.

Sometimes it feels like I'm playing an entirely different game than to what people (angrily) discuss online…besides myTeam, the game isn't really in your face about microtransactions imho.

    • Thanks for the feedback all. Grabbed it for me and the fam. As a rule we don't do in game dlc/microtransactions/currency. (Exceptions include birthday gifts etc.). So I'll let them know it's there to try since you guys have confirmed it's playable without spending up. Would be cruel to say "here's a game, but hey you need to spend to play, so no you can't".

      • afaik, nothing (outside maybe myTeam) is actually locked behind microtransactions. Everything is purchasable with the ingame currency (VC) which you earn by just playing (against AI or others) in relatively reasonable amounts. Spending $ is just a way to speed it up by purchasing VC, so I don't think there will be any issues with "need to spend to play".

  • +2

Joke is on 2k if they think they can lure freeloaders like us into their micro transaction economy by giving away this game free on epic.

  • How is the online play on PC? Easy to find someone to play? Does everyone still pick Golden State and get Curry to shoot 3's every possession?

    • +3

Not a GS fan so not me. Go Lakers.

      • +2

LeBron's 3 the other night against GS in the last minute sealed it. ;)

        • Curry was guarding him too during that possession

        • Was pretty impressive, he's kinda been hit and miss on clutch shots with the Lakers though

  • Big if true.
Can we start some kind of PC Whirlpool gang online?

    • If you look at the vitriol on some of the discussions, I'd say we do that adhoc all the time. ;-) :-)

  • This is now confirmed.

    • +2

Also got a $15 off full priced game $22.99 or more when checking out the freebie. Not sure if it's to do with that or something else.

  • Thanks OP, downloading now.

  • +3

As others have said, you don't have to spend money to enjoy this game. It's an awesome game for playing on the couch with friends, in the past half a year I've had this game, I haven't had to spend a single cent to keep enjoying 2K21.

    • I don't have friends. I can only play against the AI. It is tough….

  • +1

came so close to a drunken purchase last weekend and glad i came to my senses!

  • Downloaded but rosters don't even seem updated?

  • +1

    Awesome.

I finally get to test out my TechFast 3060 GFX (desktop setup) with a new game LOL

  • +1

    Nice freebie

  • -1

How do I download it, just got it the email

  • -2

    this game is trash

    • +2

      but ffree :)

  • People complain about micro transactions all the time. This edition i went NMS (no money spent) apart from buying the game obviously and ive got a more than capable my team squad. What sets this apart from Fifa is that it actually rewards the grind. Play Triple threat to bank some MT then start flipping auctions, Play some more and in no time youve got a squad that can compete online.

  • Cheers!

  • Thoughts on Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 year Celebration being the next free game?
