  • OOS?

  • You can get a similar brand of these (they also do garlic and a ginger/garlic blend) from Coles/Woolworths on special for $4.

    • Not 1.1 kgs though

    • Is the other brand preservative free? I have yet to find a good preservative free brand. The preservatives change the flavour for some reason - especially when used in a marinade.

      • "Maharajah's Choice":
        Ginger: 94%
        Sunflower oil
        Water
        Salt
        E330 : [Citric acid]
        E415: [Xanthan Gum].

So no preservative, the equivalant of a bit of lemon juice and something to make it not look watery. Bonus points for historic use of the little squiggle before the 'S' in " Maharajah's. I shouldn't really be adding it to everything

I can't really understand how fresh ginger is $50/kg. Surely we can import it?

I find the price to be really high too. But I also support local farmers, plus I know the soil is clean. So I guess I’m happy to continue buying it.

I’ve found ginger and turmeric quite easy to grow actually, even here in Melbourne. In winter the leaves all die off and it looks dead but it grows back in summer from the rhizome. Just need to plant fresh turmeric and ginger in the ground. In Queensland it would be really easy.

Edit: also a lot of product prices are higher because of no imported farm labour workers.

In Adelaide I tried setting the same environment as the Kahili Ginger [non-culinary wild ginger] thrives in in Northland - shaded with direct sunlight only a few hours a day, morning in this case and under a prolific suppoerted passionfruit. It only put out a only a couple of leaves the first year but is ~ 60cm high with 8 healthy glossy leaves ATM.
Protection from heavy frost and ample water + regular fertilising seems to be the secret.

        • Sounds good. Yeah the first year you don’t see a lot of leaves but I’ve just had it sitting in pots and every year it gets bigger, I keep forgetting I have it and buy dried turmeric. Mine have filled the pot.
