Hi Ozbargainers,

Traditional Winter offers are starting to appear at wholesaler level, but I am a little hesitant to over commit. My past experience tells me that posting deals for "Cold & Flu" OTC medicine on Ozbargain brings out the ethical debate as to how effective the active ingredients in the meds actually are rather than spirited discussion about how good the bargain is. This debate rages in our pharmacy and even in our lounge room at home. Anywho whether your love it or loathe it, Cold & Flu PE is actually a very high volume seller in store.

What the average Ozbargainer may not realise is that excessive negative votes for a deal (or average over time) can actually reduce that rep's ability to post - or in fact get them banned altogether - so I am a little cautious about posting cold & flu deals, despite being asked to post them often by members.

For the removal of doubt, free flat pack shipping means the item is removed from its retail box and slid into an envelope with its box. If you prefer to keep the original box intact, please select satchel shipping at checkout.

As a toe in water as to how receptive Ozbargainers may be to generic Cold & Flu this season I have the below on offer:

If you don't want downvotes, don't post deals for a clearly inferior product that has been shown in multiple studies to perform no better than a placebo.

When a product that actually works still exists but is withheld depending on what the buyer might look like.

    Just saying.

    • +3

      Noted.

      • Any nexium deals?

        • If you are on regular Nexium consider getting a prescription for Rabeprazole.

    • What product is withheld and why is there such a debate going on about it? I must’ve missed this, the last big debate I knew about in these medications was about codeine & that was a couple years ago.

      • +7

If you are purely looking at symptomatic relief of nasal congestion due to to the common cold, phenylephrine is inferior to oxymetazoline/xylometazoline. However interpatient discrepancies may exist.

      • +9

Phenylephrine replaced pseudoephedrine based cold and flu tablets, because (profanity) make amphetamines out of pseudoephedrine.

Phenylephrine is useless garbage, you may as well take sugar pills.

You can still buy pseudoephedrine based cold and flu, if your pharmacist thinks you don't look dodgy and have your license on you. Look a bit rough? Hope the placebo works for you then.

        • +4

Ahh! Thanks for getting me up to speed on the debate. (No pun intended).

      • +13

Due to clients extracting Pseudoephedrine from the “original” product it was removed and substituted for what many would argue is a far less effective ingredient. It still sells by the truckload in store, and I still use it myself but I am well aware there is sensitivity amongst some Ozbargainers who see me posting the product as me somehow trying to fleece the community.

        • +1

"many would argue" = multiple meta-analyses, but sure portray this as feelings, not fact.

        • +3

Cool attitude. I never really paid attention to your posts (not overly interested in med products) in the past but now I will.

        • +6

Gotcha. Really sucks how it only takes one type of person to make life harder for a million others, and have to jump through so many hoops just to get Medici ones that actually work for their ailment. Thanks for letting me know, much appreciated!

        • Why would you use it yourself when it's proven to do nothing to help? Very curious.

          • @Mechz: They have a history making meth and can’t get the good stuff anymore.

      • +3

        Ephedrine, then Pseudoephedrine.

the latter is still available if you provide your drivers licence.

  • +10

Phenylephrine is garbage, but a deal is a deal and I like the other deals you post. Who am I to judge?

    • +11

Exactly this is Ozbargain not Ozdebate.
Rep is being honest it's a high volume product so it's good for us that it's on sale.

    • +8

      Phenylephrine is garbage

Even worse, it's been unable to show significant positive outcomes, but has been shown to trigger allergic reactions in quite a few patients….
My GP is quite vocal on the matter.

    • Yeah. It's the absolute worst.

    • Yeah, our economy is built on the consumption of lots of garbage anyway.

    • +1

Because pharmacist have a health obligation.

  • +8

Even if it has the same effect as a placebo, I'll still buy it for when my teenagers get the sniffles. They just want something and phenylephrine works fine as they begin to feel better shortly after. I'd rather give them that than the good stuff.

Like every deal posted on here, no one is forcing you to purchase if you're not interested or don't think it's good value for what you're getting.

    • Give paracetamol + ibuprofen (1 each) a try next time.

      • Doesn't have the same placebo effect. Maybe if they were younger and I just popped the tablets out and gave them to them but they're 15 and 17 so well aware of whats what. If they take the proper "cold and flu tablets" it has a better effect even though the paracetamol is probably the only thing doing anything. If I tell them to have Panadol, they'll still be on their death bed for the rest of the day lol

  • Thanks op

  • Could you please tell me the expiry date for BULK LORATADINE?
    Thanks.

  • +1

Thanks for the deal, OP. Do you stock generic Easeacold options?

    • +2

      This..deal on Easeacold please.

  • Your ibuprofen link is broken
    ?

  • OOS

  • For the typical cold I get, I just use a cough expectorant. This thins the sticky crap and makes it easier to clear out of my system.

    Eg:
    https://bisolvon.com.au/products/bisolvon-chesty-forte-table…

  • Got any deals for bulk methylamine?

    • Drivers licence please

  • I prefer to wish my cold and flu away.
