  • That’s op. Been eyeing one of these for a while.

    Great Amazon reviews too.

    • Me too, been eyeing eBay for $31 for awhile, even printed one to try. Definitely improved my pours. Ordered it from Amazon this morning.

  • Nice find Op, I bought the 53mm and it's really nice to use. It's still available for $24.00

    • +1

Yeah saw your post, thought, damn, need a 58mm one.

  • +2

Posting this for me to see while having my morning coffee..
That's what you call targeted ozbargaining ;)

  • +9

For the money and the extra 10 seconds work this will drastically increase your consistency of your shot, more than worth it.

    • +1

Just extra thing I have to wash up

      Already got the handle gizmo
      Coffee spoon-tamp thing
      Basket
      Milk jug
      Milk froth metal but
      Milk froth rubber bit
      Actual coffee machine
Bin when spill all the grounds on the lid.

Wouldn't change it for the world though, the one good thing I look forward to on weekend mornings.

      • +1

I don't recommend washing it because the water might get inside then you'll have to unscew it all to dry out. Which then means you have to go through the process of setting the depth again. Just wipe it with a damp chux.

How to Set Palm Tamper Depth

        • +1

Thanks for this, I'm down the youtube rabbit hole of coffee making now :))

      • +2

I got lazy of all the cleaning up, so I just have espresso at home. No need to bother with cleaning the milk related stuff

      • My coffee machine was missing the tamper when I bought it and I was too lazy to take it back or complain. I've been using a glass jar for 18 months, 2+ coffees per day. I'm not sure how much I could gain with an extra thing.

        • This also does one more thing: distributing coffee evenly in the filter, thus creating even flow of shots.

  • Anyone know what size is best for a breville dual boiler grouphead?

    • +1

      This size. It's 58mm.

      • +1

        How about a Breville BES870?

        • -2

Pretty sure they're 51mm, but I haven't got one of those.

        • Google says 54mm but I'd double check.
          Likely a 53mm tamper size.

        • +2

          53mm

        • +1

I bought this one for my Breville and it works a treat

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/623978

        • I got the one that nstyle linked for my BES870 and it's works great. Just make sure you've set it correctly

  • +2

Sunbeam barista max is also 58mm for those who don’t know

  • Bought one.. not sure if I’d need slightly oversized 58.3 but for this price willing to try

  • +1

    This is so good.
Bought one last year and it was a game changer for my home coffee creation

  • +1

For coffee connoisseurs 58mm is not precise enough, you need 58.55mm.

    • I ordered one, but was wondering about that too. Hmm.. to cancel or not

    • +1

My tamper is 58.5! Where can I get a distributor 58.5 from?

      • -2

If you're enough of a coffee snob to know your exact tamper size, and want an exact distributor size, you probably know exactly where to get your precision instruments.

        • +4

Knowing how to use a caliper doesn't make you a coffee snob :)

        • +1

          I also don't want to spend $200

      • +1

Kbean is making their own tampers and distribution tools now, worth checking out since it's only $50
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/324284973550?hash=item4b80e401ee…

I'd probably recommend using a WDT tool though which is more of a bargain. literally just a cork with some needles/paperclips which is effective for declumping and distributing coffee.

        • I bought my profitec 500 from kbean! Didn't know they makes their own now too. I will have to check them out

  • +1

I've had one for about a year. Very solid and well built.

Consistency of my shots went way up using this and a WDT, when using the Smartgrinder Pro.

I've upgraded to a proper flat burr grinder and no longer need to use this though.

    • Agree, this is a great tool when starting out for better consistency. I've got one too and my only gripe is coffee grounds getting stuck in the threading on the sides.

      • +1

Yeah it's annoying but I just brush it out with the small brush that comes with my coffee machine. Takes about 5 sec.

  • I've got the Sunbeam EM7100, i think its the 58.5 too! :(

  • +2

Consistency is king in home coffee making. It's already hard enough to master getting the grind size and shot yield exactly every time, let alone with a potentially wildly fluctuating level of tamp pressure and distribution.
At least by removing these variables you can use the machines to help find your better extraction

  • Bought one of these a few weeks ago with a funnel to use with my new barista pro machine. Game changer. Must have for anyone new to home brewing IMO. Makes things so much easier.

    • +2

I just cut the bottom out of a disposable plastic cup. You can use a used yoghurt or paper cup also.

      • Good ideas, not something I would have thought of.

      • I do this too!

Actually I use 2 cups taped together.
One cup sits just outside the basket lip and the other sits just inside.

The one that sits inside acts as the funnel.
The one that sits outside is mainly a stabilizer so it wont tilt or fall off.

    • I am new to coffee and I am considering between the pro and the express, how do manage on the pro without a brew pressure guage? Just the timing and volume? If yes, how you know if you are extracting around 9 bars?

      • I weigh my pours and try get 2x grind weight in 24-27sec. Do the odd ristretto (1:1) every now and then.

        • Thanks.

        • BTW, which machine do you have?

          • @John Doh: Faema Carisma s1

            • @42: Wow! Nice :)

              • @John Doh: Got it for a steal from gumtree a few back

      • +5

I wouldn't get too carried away with the details. If you're new to home brewing just keep it simple. The Pro is volumetric so it does a good job of extracting a good shot IMO. Aim for a 1:2 ratio and 25-30second shot time which includes the pre infusion. I'm doing roughly 19-20g in and 38-40g out. Once you've got this down pat you're done. Don't stress over bars and pressure gauges. Every machine is different so be prepared to waste some beans in the process of dialling your shot on the Pro. Good luck

        • Thanks.

  • +1

Does anyone know much about the brand? Or is it merely an aliexpress tamper sold under the brand?
Eg this one for about $12 https://a.aliexpress.com/_mtOs2X3

    • Most of the stuff that are sold on ebay and amazon are probably from alibaba/ali express purchased in bulk. I wouldnt be surprised if best rated coffee tamper from ali-express is better than this. The only reason to consider this is quick delivery and easy returns if its not good.

      • Thanks. I figured as much.

        • I received mine overnight and took it apart to clean before use. It looks slight different to the AliExpress one. The centre screw in the Matow is a lot fatter.

  • got one. Thanks :)

  • +1

For a distributor tool, I much prefer the wedge/chisel design than the OCD wave design this one knocks off. Much less surface stick, and doesn't matter which way you rotate (can do a little reverse move to unstick a few grinds, for example). I sold my $160 OCD v3 after a week; my $40 wedge was easier to use, clean and produced a better cup. Only problem is, like this one, mine isn't the ideal 58.5mm diameter, and leaves a gap for grinds to get stuck.

Note: Don't get the exact, perfect fit for your tamper to your basket size as you'll create a vacuum when removing the tool, thus lifting the puck off the bed and likely degrading it unless you're very careful, promoting channeling and undoing all your good work. Unless the design promotes itself as having a suction-free ridge (you'll pay a premium), you need at least 0.2mm gap for your tamper to not create a vacuum.

  • Bought this on 20th May for $28 and arrived 2 days later.

So just outside the 7 day window to get Amazons' price difference refund. Dammit. Oh well. Very happy with it.

    • Amazon do price difference refunds? I remember asking once on their live chat and got told there was nothing they could do!

    • Never heard this before, I've also enquires and been told no

    • Could you please confirm what items you were able to get a refund on? AFAIK Amazon only price matches TVs and maybe mobile phones?

  • +1

Tried one at a friend's place, it creates a lot of mess. It's an unnecessary tool. It's the sort of thing that's a good idea but not so much practically.

Ultimately consistent grind is more important that the tamp.

    • +2

I only had the supplied Breville tamper so this was a massive improvement for me. It doesn't create any mess.

      • +1

It pushes the grinds out from the basket (probably not an issue if basket is not too full). Also, the grinds get inside the threads, when you set it down some grinds drop on the counter.

I find it easier to finger push the grinds to the centre, then just press down using the Breville tamper. I use the 4-finger method to ensure the tamper is straight (perpendicular to the basket).

        • I guess it depends how you use it.

If you're already good at using a normal tamper then there is probably no need to buy this. I thought the Breville tamper was junk so wanted to buy something better anyway.

          • +4

@WatchNerd: The Breville tamper does feel plasticky and cheap, but it serves the purpose, and stores neatly.

        • If it's pushing grinds out from the basket, how does the regular tamper not do that too? Sounds like there's too much coffee in the basket?

For me there is no more clean up required than using a regular tamper. Just give it a quick wipe with a wet cloth, dry, done.

        • +1

Sounds like the device wasn't set properly to the depth of the grind. It shouldn't push anything outside the basket if depth is properly set.

    • I found my pours were smack bang the same every time with the distributor than without. And that was with a 3D printed one. So it did make a difference for me.

  • Isn't the distributor already acting as a Tamper while you spin it with the weight and the depth if set correctly. I really don't see the benefit of tamping after using the weighted distributor.

    • I think the distributor should be set shallower, use it to push the grinds around to even things out. Then use the tamper to compact the grinds.

But the thing is, depending on the beans, you may have to vary the grind size to finer or coarser to achieve desired yield within a set time.

When you change the grind settings, the volume will also change, you then have to reset the depth of the distributor and tamper. But it's a trial and error process, by the time you get everything dialled in you may have changed the grind setting. Which is a total waste of time.

    • According to their instructions - "for best results, groom the top of the basket with a finger or flat edge before leveling and tamping."

I use the back of a knife, so the distributer doesn't really need to do much work anyway. From experience the tamping is what's important. I find this process eliminate variables which is the reason for buying this kind of tamper.

  • but my portafilter is 54 mm!

  • Looking for a budget bottomless portafilter, anyone uses these before? Please recommend.

I had a sunbeam barista Max machine

    • +1

Got one from here. Once you use the bottomless portafilter, you never look back.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274625078043

      • What's the difference?

        • +1

Deeper filter basket, and more importantly coffee tastes more intense

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: How does the depth of a portafilter change taste? Other than allow you to use more grinds for the same pull (much like a double basket)?

            • @bargainshooter: Er, that's not what I meant… Or should I list the differences 1, 2…

      • Appreciate your reply,

Just wanted to confirm that this is compatible with the sunbeam barista Max machine (Model EM5300S)?

  • Bought this on Tuesday for $24.
Did drop briefly to $23.20, then back up to $23.80 very quickly after.
    Hasn't arrived yet from Amazon.

    • Bought mine on Saturday, arrived on Sunday

  • Mine has brown stains all over it. Seems like an expensive bit of superfluous rubbish to me, not even sure why I ordered it but will give it a go later. Very clearly it is something off Aliexpress, marked up significantly and only the package has a sticker with Matow branding on it.

    • Wow you're right, there are heaps of identical-looking ones on Aliexpress! But they're around $22 too so I guess the extra $2 is for Amazon's customer service ;)

      • See my comment above. Also people were complaining setting the depth of the distributor would affect the depth of the tamp. In the Matow, you can set both independently.

      • I found one for about 13 on Ali express. See my post above 😊

  • Just received mine. The tamper side is 58mm but the distributer side is 53mm. Is anyone else’s like this? Presume it’s an error?

    • That's not right, get a refund or replacement. Should be 58mm both ends.

    • Mine arrived yesterday. Opened it last night.
Yes, the beveled side is heaps smaller than the tamp side.
The tamp side doesn't really make a good fit in the dual boiler porta filter basket. Its really loose. Moves about
And the beveled side is wayyy too small. Moves about heaps around the porta filter basket.
      I can't measure it exactly, using a ruler it's about 53mm too.

Clearly something dodgy going on there

  • -1

Returned to Amazon. Don't think it is necessary.

  • Any coffee experts got some tips on setting the depth right.
    Breville dual boiler user

    • Try gauge how far your previous tamper went down and set it to that depth as a starting point and tweak it from there.

It obviously depends on the weight of the beans you use, the grind setting, etc.

For example, I'm used to my old tamper and know how far it usually goes down for a certain grind and weight, I just now replicate that depth with the new distributor except now the puck is always flat and consistent

      • I would set it a little deeper than in that video, I remember another guide using a 10c coin as for clearance to the screen to allow for expansion on the puck when it gets wet. Then you still need to adjust your dose. If the pour is too fast, you need to increase your dose. If it's too slow you need to reduced your dose and maybe tamp a little deeper

  • Have a Smart Pro Grinder and Dual Boiler and attached the funnel suggested on top, but doesn't slot into the basket holder I've been using. Do I need to swap it out?
