Anyone Delaying Upgrading New Car Due to Lack of Affordable EV?

Would love to buy new car next year, but the choice of affordable EV in Oz is non existence.
So I am keeping my 14yo car for time being.

Agree with the article below:

  • No.

  • When I was looking into upgrading my first choice was hybrid mainly for fuel economy (I did not think at all an all electric family suv is practical by any means what so ever with our infrastructure network).
But seeing how limited the available and recently upcoming hybrid options I quickly realised its not really worth the extra you spend and what you get back. Really felt disappointed that the options are a joke compared to what’s out there in eu and even us. And the rumours about potential road tax for evs in future really discouraged me wasting any time on looking into them.
On the bright side solid state batteries are right around the corner and will be a true game changer for evs but then again, it’s also upto the govt to drive people into these not chase them
    away with ridiculous policies.

    Waiting for model y

  • The Cupra Born (basically a rebranded VW ID.3) looks great… probably gonna START at $60,000 if it even comes to OZ that is.. :(

Yep. Don't see a point in buying an ICE, as much as I love my cars.

Drove a Tesla Model 3 the other day and I'm completely sold.

Anyone else find the new Subaru hybrids disappointing. i wish they would make a full electric forester or wrx.

I don't understand the resistance from Petrol heads with EV's. Forget all the environmental arguments, from a performance perspective they absolutely slaughter the majority of ICE vehicles. Don't even give me this argument that they sound like mosquitoes because by that argument you'd rather have a Hyundai Excel with an exhaust than a quicker EV.

EV's are only just getting started and they are already putting Super car manufacturers on notice. They know they will not be able to compete with EV's built specifically for performance.

Going back on topic, i'm holding out until they are more readily available and affordable. They are the future. ICE is ancient and inefficient tech.

    • Agree on all points. Main drawback for me is the poor range. 663 km range on the Model S LR which in the real world I would estimate to be ~580 km is pretty poor in my books for remote driving such as camping.

Amazing acceleration tho on Teslas. <3

    • Totally agree. I am a petrol head and I feel excited for the new developments that EV's will bring. It's such a massive technological change and I am all for it. Most modern ICE cars sound bad (looking at those driving around in unmuffled dual cabs, V6 commodores and VW GTi's) and the idea of having quieter streets is incredibly appealing.

To be frank ICE cars are still going to be around for a very long time, you may not be able to buy new in 10 years or so but even then the last new ICE cars will still be comfortably cruising around for 20 years after that. We could even see a situation where the city's are predominantly EV and the regional areas on ICE.

ICE is so incredibly old and probably peaked in its development. The only way they are getting better fuel economy now is with high cost marginal tech like Stop-Start and DSG boxes. Once EV price is within a cooee of ICE it will take off like crazy

    • performance perspective they absolutely slaughter the majority of ICE vehicles

I'm not paying an extra $30k so I can knock of 4s from 0 - 100kmph. Plus most of the time you are doing city driving so you're really only looking at 0 - 60kph and being able to merge. Most people should learn how to merge / give way rather. Save a lot of money that way.

Petrol head performance is just stuff stuck into their head like a hobby. It really isn't that relevant day in day out especially if you are stuck in peak hour traffic.

  • I'm with you OP. I would be flipping my car right now but I really don't want to buy another petrol vehicle ever again. I'm in SA, too, where we actually get close to 100% renewables at times, so if I had an electric vehicle then my daily use of it would be close to carbon neutral most of the time.

But the choices are just dire - you can pay a trillion dollars for a terrible Mercedes, BMW etc (which apparently has to either have an electric range of 200m or be the ugliest thing imaginable), but even the 'affordable' options are all way overpriced for what they are.

A lot of blame rests with the government IMHO. It's a significant shift in the market and Australia is being left a long way behind the rest of the developed world because the federal government is doing literally nothing to encourage the change. You need critical mass in the market before prices will become more reasonable and this will also encourage more infrastructure to support recharging, repairs etc.

    • I agree and disagree with you here. I do agree that the writing is clearly on the wall… many companies are looking to move to full EV by 2030/35 and since we dont make cars here all we can do is buy what is for sale.

Further I think right now the market is unclear. The cheapest EV is the $45k MG ZS EV?

This is a non starter. Until you have an EV in the $35k range with a sensible range like 400km from an established player then it wont take. Make a $25k hatchback with 300km and you're starting. Also Mercedes BMW Audi etc. want to sell petrol cars right up until 2030 when they cant so they want you to buy their current 'trash' and then buy their full EV come 2030.

Further we've all mentioned the infrastructure costs like how Aust runs on coal and gas? And who sponsor coal and gas? the LNP you say? Why would any fed or state gov. who is in the pocket of coal gas, petrol taxes move to EV? If my wage is based on coal and gas why would I spend money to jeopardise my income?

Further since most of us cannot afford houses why does high density has no charge facilities? The govt. doesnt care about that.

And so that's that. EVs even close to past 2025 will not be common because there's so many issues about their practicality.

I also think the majority of australians who vote dont care about EVs or the environment or any kind of 'smart' forward thinking future for australia.

All they care about is investing in real estate franking credits buying shit of amazon and 4x4 and diesel suvs.

I cannot expect australians to buy what they dont understand and wont change a lick of their lifestyle to accomodate.

Excluding people here but that is a minority.

      • I'm not sure where we disagree…

  • Stick with ICE. Electric cars make little sense in Australia with out climate and distances traveled.

  • bought my current Honda new in 2019, so planning to keep it for the next 8 to 10 years at least
will give it 10 years until 2030 to see what the EV market is like
hopefully the EV market is mature enough with more options to pick from, and the price will come down slightly
but my next car will be an EV for sure
I am dreaming that solar tech will play a part in it

  • Not specifically due to lack of affordable EV though I would get one if one of the Japanese/Korean models ever hit <35k. Alot of people make a big deal about charging and the range but my daily drive is 40km, longest regular drive is Sydney to Canberra, and there are charge points near me so an EV would suit my lifestyle just fine. Additionally there are a surprising number of country towns with EV charge points around NSW.

I currently own an Outlander PHEV 2014. The car has served me well and I would have upgraded to the next PHEV in 2021 when the new Outlander has a new facelift and Bose sound system plus much EV/Battery improvement vs 2014 model.

However, that plan has been dashed with the EV tax which makes owning PHEV insensible. You still have to pay for petrol and now tax too.

To make it worse, the EV tax is indexed to inflation too so the road charging will only ever go up.

I do not want to legitimize road pricing so I am bailing out of the EV club. It has been really good experience.

Better keep the money and buy the ICE equivalent which is about $10k cheaper until I can't do it anymore.

    • I'm looking forward to the 2022 facelift model too, hope the annoying beeps are going away

  • There are car makers and there is a musketeer. I keep sulking till my wish is granted!

  • I would rather have a diesel engine car. EV for off road? Haha… Seriously? This is Ozzie… We love our outback.
