Pity about Optus, otherwise a smashing deal for most people

picking mob provider is like finding GF.
my friend's best ever amazing GF probably not good for me, etc etc its all about destiny…. and luck

          • @ChiMot: Not just mob provider but well said hahaha

          • +1

@ChiMot: So hotness = cheapest price since everyone wants the cheapest prices? But cheap things may be of poorer quality in the long-run?

            • +1

@Hamlet: kind of. i mean i laughed every time see post asking recommendation of mobile provider.

each individual is different, where you live, where you work, how you travel, mobile phone model, how do you use your mobile, which provider do you mostly call, how important is call, data, speed etc and many more variables to consider

no point cheap out if at the end you missing out job interviews call, or even worst emergency calls from family you will be devastated the rest of your life

          • +2

@ChiMot: especially if your friend ever finds out! :o

          • -1

@ChiMot: Fully agree. GF needs to be dense up there and down there. Loose is not nice.

    • +17

At my place Telstra is garbage, both Optus and Vodafone are great.

      • +6

At my place Telstra Optus and Vodafone are all garbage.
I can only stay with call over wifi.

        • +17

          get new house….

        • Canberra?

          • +2

@Karen07: Inner sub of Melbourne, 9km from CBD.

            • +20

@salin: get your Jab, my 5G had been amazing since I had mine!

              • @M00Cow: Just checked………
5G Home Internet isn't available in your area, but there is another great option

            • @salin: That's worse

    • Yes I find Optus has poor coverage overall compared with Telstra/Belong and Vodafone/Kogan

For those that don't know yet, switch and experience the difference.

Based on coverage Belong is the best value due to Telstra's superior coverage nation wide.
Especially when you take a long country drive/trip.

But on value alone this Coles deal is very good.

    • have been using optus for years in both Sydney metro and Melbourne metro and never had coverage issues..

  • +2

That international list seems pretty good, shame telstra doesnt have something like that included with their plans.

    • +2

      Boost Mobile is Telstra

      • I might have to investigate now, thanks

    • Isn't woolies mobile also Telstra?

      • +4

Parts of, not the same full network you get with Telstra & Boost

      • +7

        Telstra Wholesale ≠ Telstra
See here for a map comparing the two

        • From your link:

“ Unlike other MVNOs operating off the wholesale network, Boost has the same coverage that Telstra proper does, but boasts lower costs, and long-expiry options.”

          • @blergmonkeys: Yeah Boost is the only other one that uses the full* Telstra network.
            * Doesn't include 5G

Afaik the only network to have 5G outside of the main players is Spintel.

    • BOOST mobile, full Telstra service( other than MVNOs like Aldi or Belong with Telstra Wholesale Network)

      • +3

        Doesn't include 5G though

      • This is actually wrong.

Boost is treated similar to Telstra prepaid 4G.
Boost doesn't have access to 4GX network, 5G and certain remote sites.

  • +1

Can you port from catch connect to this?

    • +3

  • +2

    Stay safe, and enjoy :)

    Is Coles mobile usually unsafe?

  • +4

Bummer. Just renewed both mine and the missus with Boost $150 last week. :(

    • +8

Please hand in your Ozbargain membership.

    • +22

You got extra GB, and vastly superior network with Telstra

    • +10

Boost is heaps better than Optus

      • +2

Not for me. Bought $2 Sim last week to test. Optus wins for me.

      • But not price-wise!

    • +6

What’s wrong? I’ll pick boost over this anytime. This is again from own experience. Wife struggles to get a decent call 9/10 times and having weird test messages response ie not getting any when they were sent and then getting them all in a burst hours later. We were both on boost previously. Never had that issue

      • +3

I was on Boost previously & never had any issues. Since I switched to Optus I get cut outs whilst talking around the 10 min mark. Also people trying to call me but can't get through saying my phone is switched off when It wasn't. I'll pay extra and go back to Boost once this plan is done.

        • " Also people trying to call me but can't get through saying my phone is switched off "

I have had this - whilst trying to find a phone that was in the same room showing three bars and quite able to call the first phone, after which Optus would let other providers know it was on-line.

    • +2

But you get 80gb instead of 60gb and it is full Telstra network if that matters to you. I'm fine to stay with Boost as overall network and features suit me and if I get out I don't think I can get back into the $150 80gb plan as they don't offer to new customers anymore. Also don't forget when you renew this Coles one it is $120 not $99.

    • +3

OK, thanks guys, almost feel better now :D

I was basically stating the difference, price-wise, of $99 v $150, but yeah, I agree there is more data and also Boost uses Telstra :)
So yeah, not just a difference of price

    • Funny I can't wait to switch from Boost to the Catch deal after nearly a year of missing most SMS's sent to me. I literally need to switch off my phone and put the SIM card in again either once or twice a day to ensure I get texts, and even then I miss out.

This is with multiple phones, boost sims, and two different phone numbers. Boost has cost me a lot of money, but so too has my inaction in permanently solving it until now.

  • +2

    Personally really bad experience.
My workplace doesn't cope very well with optus network mobile users, dealt with customer service team, but no solutions, they said
"network is perfect, although it can fall time to time or if it would be your building problem."
"nothing we can do for you, but can I help you?"

we purchased for $99, couple of weeks later, changed to booster mobile again.
Booster works better for most of time than Optus I feel like.

  • +2

If you don't need the international stuff, Woolworths mobile is probably the better deal.
    Telstra network, 100gb for $150/year.
They often have sim cards on sale - I got the $40 one at half price so it was only $130/year. Then factor in the 10% off one shop/month and it'd be quite easy to break even/have a free phone plan. YMMV.

    • +3

part telstra you mean? only boost has full

      • [From their website:]

Smartphones are only as smart as the network they're on. That's why Woolworths Mobile uses parts of the Telstra Mobile Network with a combined 4G and 3G coverage footprint of more than 98.8% of the Australian population, covering 1.62 million square kilometres.

        • Majority of telstra still better than Optus depending on where you are.

          • @plasmapuff: I have ususlly found Optus (Catch) to be better than Telstra second tier connections…
Depends where you are and your hardware I suppose.

    • This comment confused me as I'm on woolies mobile and have the free international stuff but it might be because they like to change their plan offers/details around on a regular basis .

      • +1

You are likely to use an unlocked phone if you are ozbargainer with all these smartphone deals or imports….

      • The $150 plan is prepaid.

    • +1

Woolworths simcards don't work in telstra locked phones though whereas the coles simcards do work in optus locked phones…

    • Not sure what you mean by Sim card on sale. The $150 plan 100GB is online only and Sim can only be purchased online not available instore

They have periodic sales of the sims online. Cash rewards also does $20 cash back so the $40 sim at $20 was essentially free for me.

So $110/year for 100Gb and then 10% off a grocery shop/month…so essentially a free plan for most families.

        • Just wanted to check with you, am I able to get buy a $40 sim kit, but during activation pick the $150 plan by covering the rest of the cost?

Thanks, I forget that's an option.

@neonlight I'm pretty sure I've seen sim cards in store

  • What will be the expiry date? My boost expiring in July and this would be great if I can activate in July.. !

    • +2

I think you have 30 days from purchase date to activate

      • +2

Thanks, it would work for me then. I wish Coles start 10% grocery discount like Woolworths and I will distribute all my mobile between them.. !

  • -1

is this has option to turn on roaming ? (even better if i can turn on just sms roaming not call roaming, if that is possible)

    • From 8 December 2020, international roaming will no longer be available on your Coles Mobile service and Extras Credit will exclude roaming.

      • ok thanks

  • +2

Catch Connect you get 120gb for $120, isn't that better value

    • +2

      No international calls.

      • +1

Not everyone needs intnl calls.. Most need data.. for that the CC deal is hard to beat.

    • +3

On paper yes, but if you only use less than 60G then this deal saves you $20 plus international call in case you need.

    • +1

Not everyone needs 10Gb a month.

    • I got Catch the other day because this wasn't on sale at the time. Oh well, it's only $20 more, and I guess I can have the freedom to go a little bit crazy on the data. Couldn't find anything better value in terms of yearly prepaid. 18months ago I got a Boost deal that was better, now disappeared.

    • I agree CC is better

  • Does anyone know if Coles mobile can push voice messages as MMS like what Optus does?

    • I like that functionality, but recently discovered IOS has direct recordings of voice mail baked into the call app.

      • Thanks. Are you on Coles mobile too? I'm on Android, not sure if it's a setting thing or limited by the provider.

  • Got it from last deal. Horrible reception, Lebara had more signal strength and calls reception was way better. Good for long term cheap plan but very poor reception and regular call drops.I cancelled my plan after 2 months into it.

  • +1

I had such a bad experience with them last year (5+ months to port my number correctly). This deal is tempting but I have another 2 weeks to decide and think Woolies might be better.

    • +1

Woolies also gives you a 10% shopping discount every month, which I think can basically cover the cost of the plan.

  • +3

Is there a MUST ACTIVATE BY condition? My 12m plan expires August.

    • +6

      From Critical Info Summary:

To use this service, you need to purchase and activate a Coles Mobile Prepaid SIM. You need to activate your SIM within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion (whichever is earlier) in order to take advantage of the inclusions in any advertised plans.

      • +1

Fyi all, I called them up. They said it's fine but just if it's outside this period they cannot guarantee it's the same inclusions as advertised and only if it's changed. Will get it.

  • +1

not sure why so many negative opinions

got this deal back in feb and its been great, no issues.

useful for the international calls and occasional data use. Mostly use WIFI anyway

    • I have used Kogan, Catch, Lebara, WW, Boost…. Some of them could be a bit slower than others but were stable and reliable. I'm USING COLES at the moment, been for a few months. Very frequently it looses 3G/4G connection and I have to restart my phone to get connected again. No issue with text and talk though. Obviously there is an issue with Coles Mobile data connection. Not worth the deal. I'll never use again after my 365 day expires.

      • +1

Obviously there is an issue with Coles Mobile data connection and/or my phone.

        • Thanks for being "smart". Check other replies, many people have issues with Coles mobile If you don't have it it doesn't mean people are having issues with their phone.

    • We've used Coles for 5 months. Not a problem at all with dropouts or data issue. Reception is better indoors than Boost in most city locations in Melbourne.

  • +1

Can existing customer buy this and use it as a recharge? I’m guessing no?

  • +1

Can you port your number in

    • +2

      • +1

Sorry for the dumb question, I don't know much about this - if I already had an Optus prepaid number, and I got this deal, could I move my current prepaid number over to the new Sim?

        • +1

Yes. Porting counts the provider not the network.
