  • Is this good, Any views.

    • For $14 I bought one to try since the reviews seemed good, and at worst it'll entertain the kids for a while

      • Ok I got one.

      • Yeah that's all the convincing I needed, I bought one too 😂

    • +1

It looks like a pretty standard design air popper, there's not really much to them. I've been using a similar design Sunbeam model for the past decade or so with no complaints. Reviews on Amazon seem ok, so nothing jumping out at me to say "no, don't get it!"

    • +5

Dunno.. IMO all of these machines make terrible popcorn compared to doing it in a pan with coconut oil and salt…

Seriously, once you've had it you'll never go back.

(BTW, that's how it's done in the cinemas - the coconut oil and salt tastes like butter once mixed and on the corn!)

Edit: make sure you use a wire mesh lid to cover the pan or you'll steam your popcorn and lose that great crunch!

    • I'm about to return mine. About a quarter of the kernels do not pop pretty consistently.

      • +1

There's a good chance that the kernels are old. Maybe get a new bag, try a different brand or store

        • I thought this too. Tried two different brands with fairly long expiry dates.

      • Reduce the batch size.

      • That’s pretty normal. They are cheap as anyway.

    • +3

It's cheaper than a small popcorn at the cinema, so why not?

    • Look, it's just one case, but I bought one of these from JB a few weeks back.

It lasted less than a week before it wouldn't even power on anymore.

Returned it, and didn't even say what was wrong, he wrote "Won't power on".

      I'm guessing it's common?

So, I'm not going to get one of these again. Even the KMart one we were replacing lasted longer.

  • +5

very cheap way to get into coffee roasting

    • +1

Be ready for quite a mess of chaff though…

      • Oh, yes. Tried that once, and it made an unholy mess.

      • ah yes, should have mentioned you need to do it outside, and may not be ideal for apartment

    • +2

It's cool but the batch size is ridiculously small. Roasted coffee develops flavour several days after roasting, so you'd need to make multiple batches in advance. And then you get sucked into making all sorts of contraptions to roast larger, catch chaff, cool quickly, not make a mess. It's a gateway… 😂

      • Exactly, I would suggest someone who wants more than a miniscule batch at a time look into a heat gun and a metal mixing bowl instead as a low cost option. Much larger batches possible and greater degree of control, just have the added work of stirring during the roast. Then if you get into it, you can make things like heat gun/bread machine roasters that will be more useful than a tricked out popper.

      • I have a sunbeam popper.

        I roast mine outside.
The chaff just flies into the garden.

I can do 120gs in one go, then have to wait for the machine to cool a bit.

When I did roast often I'd do two batches, enough for a week supply for me.

In between batches I would put the roasted beans in a sifter, bounce them around a bit to cool and get rid of excess chaff.

Yes, you are roasting about a week ahead.

    • Agreed!

My complaint is that I bought this to use less cookware - however as it pops the corn dry, nothing sticks to it. The way I have managed to get flavor to stick it was using some veg oil and G-Fresh Popcorn salt, or just melted butter.

Alternatively on the stove, the humidity seems to moisten the popped corn and you can use a lot less oil and still get the salt to stick… Would be interesting to see how others do it.

All in all, my one sits in the cupboard and I just use the stove most often.

    • +1

You'd love a Whirley-Pop in that case. They're more expensive, but they make excellent popcorn the old-fashioned stovetop way. Yes, a saucepan will always be cheaper and everyone has one, but this is one of the best methods for consistent results every time.

      • Thanks mate… I think I'm going to have to try this with some Flavacol and coconut oil. 😉 The mechanism reminds me of the popper from my cinema working days!

We've got an air popper like this deal but it's definitely not as good as the microwave stuff. The air popper would be healthier though!

        • Hey mate, you can buy the Flavacol and bulk popcorn from The Party Hut on Pechey Street. Made me kind of sad I only found this out after I'd moved to Tas. ;-(

For those OzBargainers not in Toowoomba, you can also order online from here https://www.partyhut.com.au/.

    • I hope you are clarifying the butter first!

The secret is to microwave the better until it seperates, and then pour the top clear liquid onto the popcorn. This means the popcorn won't get 'wet' and it amazing!

Also, cook in coconut oil, that's the other secret to the flavouring.

  • This or microwave popcorn?

    • Microwave popcorn cause a cancer

    • +1

This, the fake butter on microwave popcorn is not good for you. Also, you can play with flavours for your popcorn if you pop it yourself.

      • -1

You don't need to buy prepackaged popcorn packets to make popcorn in a microwave. Equating microwave made popcorn with fake butter as the only other option (and hence suggesting this is better) is a very confusing train of thought.

  • So can you use a microwave bag popcorn(empty it in) in this?

    • +1

No, that will have oil and fat in the mixture, an air popper should only have dry popcorn in it.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one.

  • Thanks got one

  • cannot buy. is this only happening for me?

    It showing $40!!

Large pot using Ghee (clarified butter) with oil (to increase smoke point) and secret ingredient Flavacol Popcorn Salt https://funpartyfood.com.au/product/original-flavacolregiste…

Use a mesh or colander to allow steam to escape as otherwise popcorn will be stale tasting.

We used that salt in the movie theatres. Used to add extra 1/2 scoop to make people thirsty so then need to buy more soda.🤣

  • Another option for anyone not able to score one of these is the Target-branded popper for $19. I've got one of these as a backup (or when I'm lazy and can't be bothered to do it on the stove…) and it's acceptable, but still dries out the popcorn as much as other hot air poppers.

  • Another alternative… I purchased the "Original Proper Popper" off Amazon a few months ago, as I was already getting something from Amazon US. Perfect popcorn out of the microwave every time. There's plenty of lookalike knockoffs, but I opted for this one; https://www.amazon.com.au/Proper-Popper-Microwave-Collapsibl…
