  • +4

no a bargain considering how cheap beef is nowadays

    • Beef is more expensive my friend? and it is going up more (Australian Beef).

      • lamb is getting more exp but not beef. if you are paying too much for your beef. go to superbutcher !!!

    • What brand details please?

      • +3

to answer your question, the company is located in Casino, they export their products to Japan US and many other countries(Costco). they use export quality beef
they meet the following international stnadard:
        Aus-Meat License to export
Meat Safety Quality Assurance Program (HACCP based)
        USDA & EU approval
        Halal certification
and they dont use MSG, artifical ingredient and preservatives
BTW do you meet HACCP based standards?

        • +3

If this is where Costco in AU are getting their beef from then I'll vouch for it as BEST BEEF EVA!!

        • +1

BTW do you meet HACCP based standards? YES we do
Mariani is a massive company-They have their own beef and have automated equipment.
I guess its big companies pricing compared to small business :-(

    • +3

sorry guys its a 250g pack for $6.99. Its called Mariani beef jerky. You can google it for more details.
They mainly export theri products to Japan. They use export quality beef as well( if you know much about our meat industry you would know that most of our good beef goes to overseas(sadly).

"One of our largest export markets is Japan, supplying Costco and hundreds of other outlets. We are also
proud to be the only beef jerky sold on the Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) for the Central Japan Railway Company.

    • +3

Not even 8.99 it is 6.99 for 255g in Costco, just bought 4 yesterday, I won't say which one taste better but the Costco one not bad at all!

  • +3

    Thank you…
    The Big Chief

    • +2

Agreed. Look at all the people who eat McDonalds…… Personally I prefer a real meal. Thanks for the deal Chief.

    • +7

i also support our local business but it should not be an excause to have low productivity and high profit margin.

      • -3

I suppose qq830821 its easy to cast stones when you don't know what expenses a small business has
:-( Our profit margin isnt as high as you think as everything we do is done by hand. BUT I can see why you want to go for cheaper.

        • everybody is saying that their profit margin is thin.EVEN THE BANKS!!!!!.
I suppose if you are still having profit margin problems with $100ish per kilo jerky you should not be in the jerky making business in the first place!!!

Also, if Jim Jerky can survive with $70 a kilo, why cant your?

Also as per the HACCP certificate, can you Pls show us? i have friends working in food safety QLD so shoud be easy to verify!!!!

    • +3

From my last experience your product was loaded with salt, which is pretty unhealthy no ?

And yes i am still waiting for my free t shirt

      • haha nice :p

      • +1

nothing wrong with a bit of salt! don't believe everthing you read on news.com.au

        • loaded not just a bit of salt ;)

      • +1

Haha EVERY jerky is loaded with salt.

  • +3

Meh not really a deal. $109.375 for 1 KG beef jerky (ignoring shipping costs of coure). Not really a special deal. Sorry but a neg from me. You can get good quality meat to make beef jerky for about 10-15$ KG (on special etc).. so massive markup here. Dont think it costs 60$ /KG in overheads etc :D

    • +3

You can get good quality meat to make beef jerky for about 10-15$ KG (on special etc)

yep…. and following through on that notion….. why bother having restaurants when you can cook it all at home?…..

      • +3

I was just getting at they are charging 60$/KG for their services. Also note that there are competitors who are selling beef jerky for cheaper and just as good.. (65$ deal i think it was with jims jerky).

The aim of ozbargain is good deals I believe…

Following your notation instead of going to restaurants that have good food for good prices may as well go to overpriced places with sub-par food.

        • +1

Depends if you consider all beef jerky to be the exact same product…. which it clearly isn't.

Negging something based on the cost of a different product from a different retailer is not really useful….. There may be some who like this brand's particular recipe/consistency, and are willing to pay more.

Voting on a 'stand alone' product (ie specific product sold by one retailer), should really be based on the current 'bargain' price, compared to their 'normal' price…. or based on people's experiences with the product or retailer.

'I vote neg because I prefer another brand/flavour', etc is not really appropriate. Useful to inform the community ….. but not to potentially remove a post from view…. (as the community wouldn't be informed in that circumstance anyway)

        • +1

Agree, this ain't a bargain at all, bargain is when it's around $60/kg

The 8*40gm is just about the same price as buying 500gm of a product from the website.

Andy, at the end of the day Jerky is just plain Jerky, it ain't some flash french cuisine where you need a flash chef to prepare it. Jerky is just beef dried in marinade, cut beef, mix and soak in marinade, dry for x hr…

        • Andy, …
Jerky is just beef dried in marinade

ahh…. I see…. just beef…. I'll ask for 'just beef' next time I'm at the butchers… they seem to have all manner of different 'beefs'…. all at different prices…. Even 'just beef' from different cows is at different prices….. I never realised it was all the same.

And the marinade is also exactly same no matter where you get it from…. woahh…. never knew that either.

          Learning every day :)

        • +2

Wagyu beef, spices from the coffers of a royal indian king, water from mountains in the swiss alps all dried up in area 51

          anything else i missed???

        • Spixder's comment is hella funny,

//"Wagyu beef, spices from the coffers of a royal indian king, water from mountains in the swiss alps all dried up in area 51

          anything else i missed???"//

I dont know abt everyone else, but I'm just enjoying reading this thread, its like a havin a bittersweet moment thinking about the good old times when Geronimo throws out pretty good deals when they first started up.

    • +1

Not to justify the high cost of jerky beef in the market but from my own experience with homemade jerky beef, it will take around 2kg of raw meat in order to make 1kg of jerky beef. That is why the Costco current deal (~$27.50 per kg until 5/2/2012) is just amazing.

I think I have made up the Costco membership fee with my 2.5kg jerky beef purchase :-)

  • +4

Why is this guy always exempt from putting some average or indicative shipping costs? Just put a basic range for major cities.

Put it in chief. It will take 10 seconds.

And which nanny-state mod removed my comment?

The chief has been superseded by Jim's Jerky. This is ozbargain, not ozadvertise.

  • +1

I am currently getting through some costco beef jerky and while it is definitely cheap, it tastes cheap too!
The flavours are sweet and tacky, and to be honest it tastes a bit like bad chinese food court food.
you can hardly tell there is real meat in it, it feels a bit more like what i would imagine vegan beef jery to taste like haha!

Having ordered a couple of kilos worth of orders from jerronimo i can definitely say that if you like you good meat this is significantly better product. it just comes down to whether you can afford it or not.

    • -1

they have a soft version jerky which is definitely a bit softer than the normal jerky we eat:) you might have purchased this one:) try the other ones and they are all meaty and nice:) . btw its not a matter of affordability, its a matter of value for money. Most of the people on ozbargain are looking for the most bang for their bucks!!! BTW if you can afford 100+ a kilo of Jerky+ delivery. what the hell are you doing on ozbargain? LOL

      • +1

There is a difference between cheap and a bargain mate. I dont know the quality of this jerky (never been a jerky man myself) but just because an item is cheap doesnt make it a bargain, alot of people want good deals on higher end products.

The best example is a suit. You can get suits for $100 inc. 2 pairs of trousers, and similarly suits for $1000 and YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL the difference. Walk around the CBD for 5mins and you can see who cheaped out and who bought quality. Now if you get a $1000 suit on sale for $600 that certainly is a bargain.

        • if i mark up the jerky price to $300 a kilo then offer you a discount for $150 a kilo, using your logic, do you think its a bargain? i never say Costco's jerky is cheap. its just Costco;s jerky is more bang for your bucks. and also how do you justify GeronimoJerky's price tag if you havnt had that?
With Costco, i know at least taht if i dont like it i can always return it for a full refund no questions asked.
offer me these kind of services for a $100ish per kilo jerky, i will vote a big positive!!!

        • -1

if i mark up the jerky price to $300 a kilo then offer you a discount for $150 a kilo, using your logic, do you think its a bargain?

Of course it is….. If $300 is the normal selling price, then it's 50% off. There may be many reasons why someone wishes to buy a particular brand of product. Why should you deny them that wish?
You personally believe costco is a better deal….. fine…. it's a different product, not widely available….
Don't neg, and remove the deal from view of those who
          a) might prefer another brand
          or
          b) are not able to access costco

        • Its not a deal thou! They have had better offers (around 70$ / KG, however don't get me started on that as it took over 2 months before i asked for a refund.. haha)

If this was a good deal it wouldn't get negged :)

        • $1000 trousers - Hand crafted with high quality good in some European country.
$100 suits - Factory produced in china with decent goods.

Suits aren't all made the same, jerky however is.

        • They have had better offers around 70$ / KG

great…. how do I access that offer?

          What a crock.
$100/kg Jerky, handcrafted in Australia from quality prime beef, with high quality ingredients
$30/kg Jerky, factory produced in China from low grade beef and msg

(probably not entirely true, but to claim all jerky is the same is not correct. For the record, I don't really care for Jerky)

        • Std pricing

          http://www.jimsjerky.com.au/ $70/kg

I was referring to jerky made in Aust. If you can't even beat your own best $/kg it shouldn't even be considered a bargain. Beat your competitors if you want + rep.

          c'mon BMW…. do the right thing….

How about if you think this. Hyundai is cheaper, has all the features of the BMW and costs half the price. Both cars take you A-B and in luxury (depending on car of course, not talking excel, more so the Hyundai Grandeur). Might not be as refined as the BMW, but you get the exact same luxuries, minus the name. I guess this beef jerky can be the overpriced stuff rich people have, but for normal people that dont waste money, there are Jims Jerky and the ones posted above me :D

  • +2

Just add the shipping cost in the title…I'm sick of baiting headlines.

    • Since the rep refuses to add an indication of shipping costs and has not given free pickup as an option as well as this price is nothing special I will neg.

      • Since the rep refuses to add an indication of shipping costs

I think he actually needs to be online to be able to do that…… He's been offline since before you posted about it….

has not given free pickup as an option

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/62821#comment-747820

if you live in Brisbane you can pick up and save

        • -1

Yeah but he didn't say anything about free pick up and had ample time to add shipping costs.

Also, its just not a bargain.

        • +1

Yeah but he didn't say anything about free pick up and had ample time to add shipping costs.

Some people don't spend their lives in front of a computer.

  • +2

As far as I remember the bag of Mariani jerky I bought from Costco did have MSG in it.

  • mmm…. this costco stuff sounds good…… unfortunately I have no store in my state…. What's their shipping costs like?

    • "Costco is a cash and carry warehouse club and do not currently offer an online shopping service or a delivery service."

      • hmm….. so the folks who don't live in Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne can't access that deal then……. That's unfortunate…

  • I just got 1.5kg of beef jerky for $70 with free postage from the jims jerky deal. To buy the same amount with this deal from Geronimo it would cost me $164 plus postage… It's a shame it's so expensive because I like Geronimo's jerky more.

    • Yeah, Geronimo's isn't cheap at all.

Looking around: costco, local city convenience store, Jim's jerky and anywhere else where jerky is good. Its like saying, can I really justify going to the local burger shop to get one great $7 burger, which definitely tastes great or going to Maccers and getting a big mac, fries and drink for the same price.

It might taste better but where's the bargain?

  • +3

I think the votes on the deal are getting a bit sidetracked

If a product of comparable quality is cheaper - then its a neg

If a product of lesser quality is cheaper, or even significantly cheaper its not negworthy.

It just means that you may be willing to put up with a not-so-tasty product because its cheaper.

    Lets take jam for example.

It might be $3 a jar for mass produced apricot jam using poor quality fruit from China.

But it might be $8 a jar for handmade jam using freshly harvested greengage plums from heirloom trees carefully tended all year.

Up to you what you want to slap on your toast.

    But don't hate the jam.

    Or the jerky mind you

having said all of that the regular jerky posts are too regular and are getting tiresome.

continual "sales" or "discounts" do not = a bargain. It just means you should lower your price all the time.

    • -1

continual "sales" or "discounts" do not = a bargain. It just means you should lower your price all the time.

Plenty of businesses do monthly special buys for particular products. It means the profit margin on that product is lower or zero. It's done to raise awareness of a brand/product, and hopefully get some new customers in the hope that they become repeat customers. If it's an especially good price, then repeat customers can pick up a good deal for a product they like. To always sell at the reduced price is unsustainable - especially for small businesses.

      • -1

yeah but don't post it here. you and Andy sound like friends of the OP.

        • lolol….

          Yes…. I am also a geronimo jerkey sockpuppet….

Add them to the list of other retailers whom I allegedly sockpuppet for….. :D

  • +1

    "What a crock.

Thats why i compare Costco's jerky with his jerkey. Costco's jerky is also produced in oz with export quality beef, no msg(according to their website)

    • Costco's jerky is also produced in oz with export quality beef,

unfortunately it's only available to a limited number of ozbargainers…..

      • Have we got a shipping cost on this jerky? Right now its 109.375$/kg With shipping this will go up..

        Bad information

        • Right now its 109.375$/kg

          It's $90/kg

        • Did my maths Fail me?

          8 Packets of 40 Gram = 320 gram. For 35$

          Therefore 35 / .32 = 109.375

          :\

          Correct me?

        • Weird.. didnt realise the special was buying 1KG of jerky? Thought it was for the sample packs. Maybe I should re-read the title… >.< As before, factor in shipping costs :)

        • The special is for 8 bags of 40g.

the $90 a kilo is normal price I think

I would assume buying in larger quantities will be cheaper as it cuts out costs associated with weighing and packaging.

  • +2

Discount on the kilo packs please! ;)
