[Afterpay] Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro $463.25, Dream Machine $367.20, U6 Lite Access Point $143.65 @ Wireless1 eBay

200
AFTPY15

Well… I could have saved a good $50 if I'd just waited for this deal to come through (new UDM-Pro arrived in the mail today).

Seems Ubiquiti gear is going pretty cheap on Wireless1 at the moment. Strongly considering a couple of U6 Lites myself.

  • What's the general feel around Ubiquiti these days after they kept covering up a data breach?

I'm keen to setup a decent network in my new place with some POE cameras and Ubiquiti does look great.

    • +1

I was pretty set on them but think I'll just go with a couple of Asus AX routers with an ethernet backhaul and possibly a Reolink NVR system.
I did like the all in one nature of Ubiquiti but the more I look at how I can configure other systems, I think it will suit my needs better (not to mention be a lot cheaper).

they tend to sidestep the topic or avoid talking about the breach (understandably).

      bit of background:
i was having issues with the UDM Pro and brought up the forced online registration and the breach. the response was

Quote: " We are aware of requests to allow local set up. The requests have actually dwindled over time as we find the bulk of our customer prefer the accessability of the online account, thus we lean more toward online accounts as that is what the bulk of our customer base are requesting." they ignored the breach topic.

im still having issues with the UDMP, and the support are a bit of a let down to be honest. the usual restart this, factory reset, try beta software. the usual ask for obvious info to buy time (keeping ticket SLA levels up), despite uploading logs and support files. their wifi is amazing however.

if i had a second go at my setup, i would have gone for a pfsense box and the Unifi wireless. and not use unifi protect.

      • Thanks for the info. Definitely food for thought as I want a local only option at for my setup.

      • Unifi wireless does still need a controller though. We run OpnSense with AP Lite and a cloud key and it's pretty good. I think you can also run the controller on a PC or RPi

        • +1
I have unifi controller set up in docker on my NAS, however it's not currently running.
You only need to run the controller to set them up, update firmware, change your SSID/password or other settings.
They maintain current config unless something happens to mess with them (power outage etc), so no need to run controller 24*7.

I just killed off my USG, in favour of OPNsense, but still have 2 AC Lites.

          • @pumpkinspice: Had any problems with the AC Lite dropping out? Pretty sure they overheat sometimes in summer, but also seem to need a reboot every now and then too which is a little annoying for a PoE device

            • +1

@3: I've been having issues with my laptop being unable to connect. It's the only client that has the issue (other devices remain connected), but restarting the AP fixes it, and restarting the laptop does not.

Have not looked for any support on the issue yet, but it is a weird one.

              • @Chandler: Is your laptop using 2.4 or 5Ghz?

The only problem I've had, which isn't a problem with the APs per se, is when they reboot sometimes my 2.4Ghz devices connect to the AP that's further away. Rebooting those devices gets them to connect to the nearer AP.

                • @pumpkinspice: Thanks legiong.

Not sure which band it's using, will have to check. Both are active at the AP, and I might have Band Steering enabled… I may have disabled it to resolve another issue; would have to check that too!

I do only have the one AP, so it's not getting mixed up between APs.

            • +1

@3: I've had them for just under a year, and had no issues that I can remember.

I was worried that my devices wouldn't move between the APs as easily without the USG in the mix, but it's been a seamless change.

I don’t think their handling of the issue was impressive, but I had reset my credentials on the 11th Jan at the initial reporting so I didn’t get as invested in the whistleblower story that then dropped a month or two later identifying that the hack had been worse than let on.

The company as a whole has a bit of a community relations problem, but I still like their gear.

Go with Mikrotik, you and your wallet won't regret.

  • I bought some u6 lites recently from these guys. But I'm just one person.

Got the tends 4 port Tenda Poe switch along with it also for a good price. Poe is cool.

  • Nice one, wellzi - thank you. As a bonus they just dropped the price further to $454.75 as I was ordering! #win

    • +1

How'd you get that?! I'm getting $463.25 on my calcs!

      • I've no idea, but I used your link above and the price changed just as I was checking out.

You saved AU $90.25 on this order.
        Order total: AU $454.75

        • +1

Ah looks like there's an "Extra $10 off" deal attached to it now as well… Holy hell!!!

I just paid $550 for mine. I could have saved almost $100!!

      • Hi wellzi

We might be adjusting the price while you are doing the post.
Please talk to our customer service team for the discount.
        Thanks

        • Hey mate, thanks for the comment!! Tried to send you a message but you don't accept messages. :)

Can you just confirm what you mean by "please talk to our customer service team for the discount"?

I considered sending a message thru eBay to see if I could purchase another UDM Pro and have the first order refunded (of course keeping the one that just arrived today and not having another sent). Unless you had other ideas?

          Cheers,
          Wellzi.

            @wellzi: Hi Wellzi
I have talked to our customer service team, as this is an afterpay promotion,we might not be able to partially refund you for your first order. Our team recommend to cancel the first order and repurchased again.
Sorry for the inconvenience we caused.

            • @W1James: Thanks James! :) … I'll see if I can purchase again and then have the first transaction cancelled. As item already received there's no further action. I appreciate all your help!!! I'll also purchase a U6 Lite. :)

        • Hey James, can you do a better price on the UVC-G3-Flex camera? Harris technology on eBay is a bit cheaper ($116.80 vs yours $125) and they are also part of Afterpay promo too. If you match it, I’ll get both the camera and the UDM pro and combined under one package. Thanks.

          • +2

            @cloudie9: Hi Cloudie9
Yes, we can match Harris Technology's price.
You can simply refresh the UVC-G3-Flex camera page and using AFTPY15 at check out to get the same price.
            Thanks

            • @W1James: Hi, the discount to $116 only works for one item. Is there any way to order 3 or 4 in the one transaction at the $116 rate? I would rather deal with you guys.

              • @drmac: Hi drmac
                Sorry for the late reply.
I have tried my best to fulfill your needs.
You can now buy multi quantity of G3 flex from the link below, it is little bit more than $116, but that is the best we can do

                https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/253901352622

                Thanks

                • @W1James: Bummer. Ordered 4 of the flex earlier today while they were at 125 each before discount. Was too early I guess.

Good to see the great support but.

                • @W1James: Brilliant. Thanks, will order soon.

            • @W1James: Any special on Ubiquiti UniFi 8-port 10G SFP+ Aggregation Switch Layer 2 without Afterpay? Or Pre-order for Ubiquiti UniFi U6-LR Wi-Fi 6 ?

  • I've been thinking about wiring the house with CAT6 the last couple weeks and getting one of these, but have a few questions for the OZB network nerds:

    • Are access points manufacturer exclusive?, i.e. is the U6-Lite is only compatible with a Ubiquiti switch, or would any other, so long as it supports PoE?
    • How future-proofed are these for WiFi 6E? Will it just be a matter of replacing the WAPs with a WiFi 6E model down the line, or will the switch and router need upgrading too?
    • Any other considerations for Gigabit NBN down the line?
    • +1

No, can use on any switch. If no PoE, you can use a ~$20 PoE injector (not included with the U6-lite). Slightly nicer using Ubiquiti switch gear as you can manage centrally - but may not be needed in your circumstance.
Yes, you can swap out or add APs down the line (I have a mix of unifi APs on our network).
We use the UDM-Pro on NBN FTTP 1000/400 and works great. Tested it on 10GBE as well with no issues (not NBN…)

      • Thanks! So there's not likely to be any bandwidth issues just replacing a U6-Lite with a later 6E version over the same CAT6 cable with PoE?

        • Short answer is I wouldn’t worry too much.

Longer answer is we possibly can’t say until the hardwares out, and it’ll depend what model you buy. WAPs are hitting a point where they could potentially saturate a 1Gbit port under ideal conditions. There’s a few 2.5Gbit switches coming along to provide increased throughout which would address that as it becomes an issue.

I imagine your Cat6 will be fine, but you may need to also replace your other hardware if you absolutely must max out a 6E AP, including possibly switches and routers.

Also unless you are pushing lots of data within your own network, you’ll still be limited by what your ISP can do for anything external which if you are lucky is 1gbit, but in AU likely much lower.

Code is working again. Got my UDM Pro for $498 today. Not as good as original deal but still very good nonetheless.

    • +1

      Grouse! I just bought a USW-24-POE for ~$497 with it. :)
