What is a laser engraver? Why do you need a laser engraver?

Laser engraver: It is an advanced equipment that uses laser to engrave materials that need to be engraved. In the period of rapid development of the modern CNC engraving machine industry, the use of laser engraving machines is becoming more and more widespread, mainly with the following advantages:
1) Laser engraving does not need to contact the workpiece to be engraved, saves many tools, and the operating cost is very low;
2) The high-precision characteristics of laser engraving are especially suitable for the processing of complex graphics;
3) The laser beam under computer control can move at a high speed, the engraving process can be completed in a few seconds, and the processing efficiency is high;
4) Due to the combination of laser technology and computer technology, users only need to carry out high-speed engraving and cutting according to the pattern output by the computer, and can change the printing design at any time, which fundamentally replaces the traditional mold making process and is more convenient.

    dont buy lasers without enlosure..

    • Hi ,there will be some optional add-ons released at the end of this month,Full-enclosure Casing is one of them.
      I will post it here when it is available.

      • It would be nice to see them - however it may be a bit too late.

    Should also mention how many watts the laser is in the description.

      To save others the effort, it's:

      Laser Power: Electric power: 20W laser power: 5000-5500MW

      I'm going to err on the side of it's 5W.

    • -2

      Thank you for your suggestion. This is 20w laser.

        Please don't lie.
        LU2-4 FAC laser module (electric power: 20W, optical power: 4.5-5.5W
        There is 5.5W going in to your laser. Other Chinese listings do the same, and I won't let that fly on here.

        • @superroach

          You're correct, it is 4.5W-5.5W in real output power (20W being input).

          The OP/Store Rep must be part of the marketing team, and not a technical person (and/or just straight up dodgy).

          They also seems to be a reseller, not the actual manufacture.

          Please buy from the official store if you do:
          https://www.aliexpress.com/store/4380068?spm=a2g0o.productli…

          The 4.5W-5.5W is stated in the below review, at timestamp 2m35sec onwards:

          The company Ortur is actually a good company and have quality products.

          • @Ausdave: Hi ,thank you for your explanation. Please rest assured that we are authorized distributor of Ortur brand.
            There are limited distributors for Ortur in the market.

    For people who aren't familiar with laser machines:
    - this is a diode laser, which can only engrave material such as timber (for example burn an image on timber).
    - diode lasers aren't that high powered, and struggle to cut through anything thicker than 3mm timber.
    - you will need to wear special laser safety glasses during operation, as it will potentially burn your eyes, like looking at the sun.
    - if you would like to engrave and cut timber/plastic, you will need a "co2 laser", and a "fiber laser" for metal

    • Thanks for the advice @Ausdave - in your opinion would a 5w diode laser cut 9-12mm pinboard? Want to make some shapes for ma kids.

        @crashtest

        The 5w diode laser will definetly not cut through anything thicker than 3-4mm wood, and also leave massive burn marks on the wood.

        You also have to ensure the wood you engrave/cut is not toxic (some use toxic glues), which can be harmful to you/your childern's lungs.

        Even my $10k 40w Co2 laser will struggle with anything thicker than 6mm, and will require multiple passes to cut through.

        What you're looking for is a CNC machine, which is essentially is a power drill mounted on a structure to cut in a controlled manner (youtube CNC machines if you're unfamiliar).

        CNC machines only cut through material with a drill, not burn. This is a more safer alternative to lasers.

        CNC machines ranged from $300 to $1.5k, difference being bed size, power of motors, and preassembled.

        I suggest possibly reaching out to the Facebook group below, as there are many hobbyist that would quote you cheaply to make it:

        Unfortunately I can't make it for you, as my CNC is tiny and weak.

        If you want further info on lasers, CNC, 3D printing, feel free to let me know and I'll provide my contact number.

        Just to feed some people's curiosity, I'm a mechanical/structural engineer and do things on the side as a hobby.
