it works out even cheaper if you pay in usd !!! save a dollar!!! usd 34.01(~31.55)

  • I would presume these do not meet Australian Standards and you could be booked for using them. There have been recent blitzes on this by the Vic police.

    • for what reason?
unless you are using globes that have a blue tinge then there shouldn't be an issue..

    • Good point, may be worth checking it out. But I think these are Euro road legal, and they are standard 55w bulbs, they are just more efficient. Also these are not your blue light bulbs so they are not as annoying..

I'm no lawyer but found the following that may be applicable in this case:

From Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 51/00 - Filament Lamps) 2006:

      ALTERNATIVE STANDARDS

7.1. The technical requirements of any of the editions of United Nations –Economic Commission (UN ECE) for Europe Regulation No. 37 - UNIFORM PROVISIONS CONCERNING THE APPROVAL OF FILAMENT LAMPS FOR USE IN APPROVED LAMP UNITS OF POWER DRIVEN VEHICLES AND OF THEIR TRAILERS, up to and including the edition incorporating the 03 series of amendments are deemed to be equivalent to the technical requirements of this rule.

So ECE R37 compliant bulbs are equivalent to this ADR, and the OSRAM Nigh Breaker Plus are ECE R37 certified, making them ADR compliant thus legal on our roads, IMO.

  • I really misread that title…

    • The OSRAM bit?

      • Lol, yup.

  • I really doubt these are legal, given the "10% more white" claim.

Tungsten halogen lights always have a yellow tinge, it is inherent in their design, as they are incandescent bulbs. You can make any incandescent bulb "more white" by running the filament at a hotter temperature - but with DRAMATIC reduction in their life.

The only other way to make a tungsten halogen bulb "more white" is to, well, "add a little bit of blue". This is like the blue light bulbs, but "only a little bit illegal".

Unless the bulbs have Australian approvals, then they are likely illegal, even if they do meet the Australian specifications.

    • Yes these are not OEM bulbs, premium I would call them. So If you want normal replacement bulbs, then you are probably buying the wrong item. I would suggest buying the Philips EcoVision for that, 10% more light and double the lifetime of normal bulbs, they haven't failed me yet and its been 3 yrs.

In regards to blue, there's another OSRAM range for blue-tint…hence 10% more white correct without actually seeing it. I think at the end of the day, if they are E labelled, ie ECE R37, they are OK. I haven't seen a light bulb that has ADR written on it…even on the OEMs bulbs on my car (Aust made Camry)…

    • To be honest, I bet you probably wouldn't even be able to tell these apart from other headlights if they were coming at you in your rear view mirror.

  • I'm very tempted to get these bulbs.
If Euro legal should be fine for Australia - IMO.

Main downside is the short life of the globe - seems to last <1year, with the previous non 'plus' Nightbreakers only lasting 4-6 months!

It's a real pain changing the globe in my car.

    • I'm also in the same boat, I'm thinking of getting them for my low beam but not for the foglights, which are much harder to change.

    • My non plus nightbreakers lasted 1 year. I'm on my second set of nightbreakers, but now im on the plus version. I've never had trouble with police but do noticeably light up the road better. Much better light throw so you can see further ahead.

  • I guess I am lucky never been pulled over for using them in the past two years…

From personal POV, these bulbs are just less yellowish then the standard bulbs, not white like a HID at all. Also, any Repco, Autobarn and Supercheap Auto stores, whilst not exactly selling this Osram bubls, they either have Phillips and Narva bulbs that have similar specification to Osram. I doubt it if they would like to sell any illegal replacement bulbs.

Bought 2 of these (H7) on eBay last month for less than $22. This is NOT a bargain.

Ebay is not a bargain. Otherwise this site would be covered in eBay links.

eBay is a haven for fake wares. Do you know how easy it is to fake headlight bulbs?

  • Beware of claims such as '90% more light'. They are almost always totally false. It's still a halogen light bulb based on a tungsten filament running at the same wattage. They can play with the filler gas for a little more efficiency, but nothing is going to double the efficiency of a tungsten light bulb.

What they're probably referring to is 'more light' as in 'it looks brighter because we block some of the orange and red light'. What you end up getting is less light, as the blue glass is blocking light and not adding more.
