Good to see they're back down a bit - I got 4 of these just before prices went silly. All are cracked open and living in my microserver. The 1TB platter drives fly, and stay nice and cool.

    • according to WD, they will back to full production after June this year, so dont expect a quick drop very soon.

      • i assume by the end of this year, the prices would drop after resuming production in June :)

      • toshiba aims to be back to capacity before the floods by april so I'm hoping prices will start dropping sooner.

  • The price is not as good as my $133 go flex 3tb from amazon three months ago(they have this for $125 at that time for a short time), but it is the best price currently we can have.

I'd be inclined to hold off on purchasing this for at least 2 or 3 weeks and see if the price stabilizes.

    • Good site. Thanks for the link mod!
Judging from the downward trend, I'd expect this
      to reach 120.

      • Yeap. Always use that site before purchasing from Amazon. This is a great deal and I'm tempted but as neil pointed out, the trend could continue and bring it down to around 120-130 mark and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

  • decent deal. just bought it at AUD 157.05 shipped. thanks.

This is a decent deal compared to http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63000. You pay just more $68 for extra 2tb. And also you get USB 3.0

  • Presume you can remove hdd and install internal?

  • enclosure crackable?Just want to take the inside of it as sata ,anyway, what's the difference regarding to those sata drive without case?

    • Yes - they are, but you will break at least a few of the clips - so don't expect it to go back together nicely!

Most of the complaints seem to be from the enclosure itself - and it's freaky power management. When you first plug it in, the drive doesn't spin up. It waits until you try to mount it - and sometimes if it has been to sleep, it struggles to wake back up.

Of course, out of the enclosure, this isn't a drama any more - or you can use a utility from seagate to disable the power management.

      • I'm pretty sure the struggling to wake up is related to Windows 7 or your PC hardware, there are other hard drives with the same issue and its annoying.

Risky drive, if the reviews are anything to go by.

  • Can anyone confirm if the power adaptor needs a 110v to 240v transformer to work in Oz? Not sure if the power adaptor has an auto voltage.

    • Yes - 110-240 is fine. (at least it was with the ones I bought a few months back) Output is 12v 1.5A -

Seems to be a fairly standard connector - I was able to use the pack from my Maxtor Shared Storage II with it as well.

A trick for young players though - when connected to power, the drive won't spin up straight away - so you might think something is wrong. This is just the power management at work though and it will spin up once USB is mounted.

Price Change - it's just gone down to US$149.99

    • Excellent! Post needs to be updated!

  • Do these drives come with multiple plugs for the adapter?? (ie. Australian?

    • No. They are all AMERICAN plugs. But you can easily bend them to fit aussie sockets.

      • lol??? I'd recommend spending 25c for an adaptor on meritline instead

        • +1

and wait 100years for it to arrive? Rather get some pliers and bend it. That's just me.

        • Id like to know what adapters these are for 25cents…
I had a quick hunt on meritline $3.79 seemed cheapest - quite possibly my search-fu is flakey.

        • I bought 2 for $1 on ebay once, delivered. The benefit of the 'bend prong' method is you don't have this precariously balanced thing sticking out of your power socket.

    • I have no idea.

The Australian version gives you EU and US plugs, it would seem silly if the US version didn't have AU and EU.

      • Yeh that's what I thought… fingers crossed!

      • I bought one of these from Amazon before the price went bonkers. It's definitely only got a US plug, but it's a multivoltage power supply so you only need a dumb adapter you can buy on eBay or from the $2 shop.

  • interesting that 3TB internal drives appear to be still >$200 yet these enclosure ones are cheaper - and, I am assuming there would be a warranty issue if you do crack open the enclosure (to use internal) and you get a fault down the track

    • +2

I know western digital links the hard drive to the enclosure so you cannot RMA the drive itself as it will identify as a "External Drive".

Seagate prob does the same, so it would void your warranty when you crack it open to use it internally.

You would want to crack it open though, the case is supposedly the culprit in drive failure due to poor ventilation and overheating.

You prob also have issues with warranty if you brought it from USA.

      • Why bring it from the USA when you can just have it posted? :)

  • I only see "free Super Saver Shipping" to US addresses?
Am I missing the free to Austrlia shipping somewhere?

    • +1

Who said it was free? OP said it was $12.95 shipping.

      • Doh, coulda sworn the $12.95 wasn't there when I read it before. Need to check my eyes, thanks :)

  • what address should I put since it only ships to US addresses?

    • They ship to Australia. Just make sure the seller is Amazon.com and not some 3rd party seller.

  • $119 was the cheapest I saw at Computer Geek Meet

    • Please explain? A Google search for 'Computer Geek Meek' reveals nothing.

Is this a shop, a swap meet, location?

  • I had a 1TB segate external fail on me this week. Took 3 months worth of baby photos with it. When i googled the model number it became clear that i wasnt the only one with the same problem. Segate sell faulty hard drives and they know it.

Quote to recover my HDD $2400. lesson learnt . Dont buy segate

    • You do realise that any hard drive can fail at any time?

You need to learn the lesson of backing up.

    • No, lesson learnt: Back your files up for god's sake.

A HDD is only good for so many reads/writes and then it packs up. People need to start looking at computer hardware in general as disposable products with finite life spans.

    • i'll recover your hard drive for $1200 or it's free ;)

  • Damn, these don't come with the multi-adapters a la the Aussie ones. Oh well I'll just bend the pins.
