man, game pass becomes more tempting by the day…

    • +19

Get on it! You only need to beat 3 games a year and it has paid for itself.

      • +54

You don't even need to beat them! You can just gently stroke them and it's STILL worth it.

      • I haven’t had time to finish a single game in probably 6 years. Adulting 🥲

        • You are not alone.

        • Ouch

    • +12

$1 for 3 months with $1.60 refunded under cash rewards. They're paying you 60 cents to try it out for 3 months. What else would you want?

      • +8

Then keep loading up cheap time too. The Telstra Xbox One S deal for $275 with 2 years of the pass (I sold the xbox for $200 on gumtree), ebgames doing 40% off gamepass cards, there was the deals with EA time for a while.

I have so much time I haven't even been able to add the 2 years to my account yet, I'm good for about 4 years of gaming for maybe a couple of hundred bucks. Considering I've already clocked a couple of games + put about 40 hours into nier automata so far in the past couple of months alone, this is some bargain gaming.

        • +1

I don't see the ebgames having a deal for gamepass cards?

          • @alpha3po: Historically, not right now. Same with the EA and Telstra deals, keep an eye out and they keep coming.

      • Wait, what? Link, pretty please!!

        • +3

Cash Rewards: $1.60 for Game Pass Ultimate
Microsoft Store: $1 for 3 Months Game Pass Ultimate. Don't follow this link when buying. You will need to go through CashRewards site to get the Cashback tracked. Just search for Game Pass Ultimate on Microsoft or go to Xbox from the navigation pane.

I have done this a few times. I just let my game pass expire and soon enough another offer pops-up for $1 trial for between 1 to 3 months. I have never paid full price because I am not a regular gamer.

      • Don't forget this technique: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/656496

In July, I got 18 months of GPU for around $120 using this technique. The only difference was I used mtcgame.com to buy 3x 12 mth xbox live gold memberships, then subscribed to GPU and cancelled GPU renewal.

I suppose it would still work….

    • +1

Its the best, I play games I never thought I would only because they are on gamepass.

I have converted from Playstation due to the value for money. At first I thought this would suck because I had a good group of friends on PS, but thanks to crossplay I can still play with them on games like Call of Duty (which I admit I purchased separately as its not on gamepass). Also if you have a PC you can access all your gamepass games and play them… its a game changer!!!

With project xCloud coming out as a full service you will be able to play most games on your smart phone on the go by connecting your bluetooth controller.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Don't think it was posted but there is a free 30 day trial to Disney+ via Game Pass Perks.

  • +1

Good summary, thanks for sharing. I watched the whole thing and it's hard to remember all that was coming out given so many games announced.

  • -2

All the Available Today sections are already available to play a few months ago except Like A Dragon. That's a new one.

    • +3

No they weren’t. Not all Bethesda games were added before.

      • -4

Maybe not on PC. I see them on Xbox..

        • +3

Death of the outsider for example, added today to Xbox/pc

Doom (2016), wolfenstien 2, evil within 2…. All added today to Xbox/pc

          • @XCOM v2: Yeah he's right they've been on the Game Pass PC Version for weeks now. Must be a console release thing?

  • +4

    No Fable…thats a shame :(

    • +3

      Fable isn't coming till 2023.

  • Any deals ($1 deal or whatsoever) for a Game Pass sub going around atm?

  • +23

no real alligence to MS or Sony, but from somone in the fence it sure looks like SONY needs to do something to keep up with Gamepass, and fast.

    • +23

Yeah, I feel for PS5 digital owners where at the moment there aren't many options outside of the PS Store where the RRP's (look at the new Battlefield pricing) is a joke.

    • +3

They have PS Now. But its not out in Australia.

    • +5

Same, in fact I've usually been a PlayStation player primarily for the past decade, an Xbox 360 player before that and now a PC master race but looking in MS have laid out a great game plan for this generation. This might be one of those periods where Sony's over confidence costs them for a while.

    • +2

Presumably they would have done so already if it was having much of an impact on them. The fact that Sony's PS Now subscription service remains a bit of a niche product and that Nintendo don't really have one at all, suggests that neither of them are all that concerned.

      • +3

Sony offered the "PS Plus collection" and went really hard getting good games onto that service the last 8 months or so. I'd consider that to be a response, just not a 1:1 response.

The problem for Nintendo and Sony is that they dominate the current conventional model. They have the most to lose by disrupting it. It's not a guarantee that subscriptions will eventually threaten and overtake the conventional model, just a possibility - these companies aren't going to be willing to risk losing their current high profitability levels on this possibility unless they're damn certain that it's going to be the future.

        • +1

As far as I'm aware they haven't added anything to the "PS Plus Collection" in that 8 months.

It's a great selection of games, but it is static.

          • +2

@Xenocaust: Oh I didn't mean to imply the PS+ collection had grown, rather that they'd also been doing really high quality games for PS+ monthly sub stuff, especially in comparison to what Microsoft's Games With Gold was doing. PS+ was adding things like Control, Maneater, SOTTR, FF7 remake, and even a few day 1 games like Oddworld Soulstorm this year.

Both the initial wave of PS+ collection stuff and the monthly deals are in my view their attempt at providing extra value to their own subs in the short term as a way to seem more appealing relative to GP. Long term, the play would be to get PS Now up to snuff as a more direct analogue, but for now this still made plenty of people happy.

    • +14

      It's a little too amazing.

Call me cynical but this looks like a really slippery slope to a much worse future.

I think it should be pretty evident they can not maintain this model and at some point in the future, you will get shit like "Disney Premiere Pass" or games will increasingly be stuffed to the brim with in-apps and other models of generating revenue.

Call me cynical twice, but I'm pretty sure I prefer Sony and the classic model of selling games (even if the launch prices are a bit eye watering).

Of course, the value is so amazing, if they have local Cloud servers, I will be subscribing (or when the series S gets stupid cheap). We're all going to propel ourselves in to a worse future but it'll be fun for 3-5yrs I guess.

      • +6

The sad part is I'm probably going to stop buying PC games in general, because they'll end up on xbox game pass one day or another.

For example, the Yakuza games are all on gamepass. No one's going to be buying that unless they really want to play it on release. Especially the smaller studio/indie games that are amazing all end up there like Hades. I'll probably stop backing games on early access and kickstarter too.

Ultimately, it will mean all game devs will have to consider putting their games on there, only because everyone's stopped buying games like they used to and there's broad expectation that everything will wind up there one way or another.

Not sure what that means, but it seems like Xbox is becoming the Netflix/Amazon.

      • +6

        You are cynical.

This is the future we deserve.

        Your are cynical.

      • +9

The more successful GP becomes in attracting users, the more Sony will need to adjust it's competing offerings. PS Now and GP Ultimate are roughly equivalent services in technology terms, offering both cloud gaming and local downloads with large instant game libraries - but GP is much more attractive because of all the new day one games you get (and the heavy weighting for PS now to very old cloud-only PS3 titles by number). However, Sony is positioned to be able to compete with that service better should it find that it needs to, it need only change it's internal policies, the infrastructure is already there.

The future where GP becomes extremely successful is one where you will also see other companies, not just Microsoft and Sony, try to really push their subs. EA Play is, right now, allied with Gamepass (GP Ultimate bundles EA Play). Ubisoft+ is a thing but doesn't seem super successful. But in a few years time it wouldn't be insane to imagine some further corporate consolidation or business agreements where for example EA Play and Ubisoft+ merge into one service to be more attractive.

I expect that 2026+ is not going to be GP monopoly on the industry with massive pricejacking, rather I think GP will be having trouble getting as many games onto the service simply due to competition from other services trying to muscle in on the same space in a big way. Companies will be running their own netflix-of-game libraries and thus taking them off GamePass.

This future being one of the likelier long term otucomes is why Microsoft is buying so many studios - because in this future, they'll need to own a lot of content themselves rather than just being able to rely on temporarily licencing all of it. There will always be indies and small scale studios to fill some of the gaps, but eventually the landscape will get competitive and the price to put a game on GP will go up for them.

This is what we saw with Netflix - really attractive library, followed by major success, followed by lots of competitors starting to muscle in, who eventually realised they couldn't compete with netflix unless they consolidated their offerings, and now we live in a world where you have 3-5 major streaming players. Netflix is still on top, but Disney+ is fast gaining, and Discovery-Warner is a major upcoming force. Then you have other shows exclusive to Peacock, Apple TV, Amazon Prime… etc.

        • +4

Disney+ is what you get if Nintendo tried doing the GamePass model.

I've tried apple tv, amazon price, etc and still find the services and offerings being much weaker than Netflix's.

With all the weird old crap on Amazon prime, I'd say that's Sony's PS NOW.

          So

Nintendo's GP version = Disney+ (assuming the service/performance is implemented well, which I doubt)
          PS Now = Amazon Prime
          Microsoft Gamepass = Netflix

        • +1

Both Microsoft are Sony are exploring / expanding their market outside of console gaming. The reasons are obvious. AAA games take time and money to develop and they need to sell well to make it worthwhile. Sony and Microsoft cannot get enough consoles onto people's hands. Even with the current PS5 install base, PS5 only exclusive games are difficult to generate enough revenue. That's why we are seeing more PS4/PS5 cross gen first party titles for now.

Sony wants to tap into mobile gaming market and also being more aggressive in the PC gaming space. Microsoft is going heavy on cloud gaming. A lot of game companies (inc. Ubisoft) feel that this generation of consoles could very well be the last generation of consoles. Cloud and mobile gaming will take over (well, mobile gaming appears to already taken over in terms of revenue). We are seeing mobile devices having more CPU power than older PCs/laptops.

Crazy GPU prices make the consoles attractive at the moment. Anyway, Sony really needs to watch out on the cloud gaming push from Microsoft.

          • +1

@netsurfer: Sony already have cloud gaming on PS Now, and have had it for a number of years. But like the rest of that service, it's treated as a bit of an afterthought because it's less lucrative than the current model. If that equation changes, they already have the pieces in place to scale it up and out pretty quickly. There's just not currently a lot of incentive for them to do so.

        • good analysis, agreed

      • +2

With gamepass, there is no "voting with your wallet." You'll eat what you're given because you paid for the pre-order to end all pre-orders.

What I'm mostly concerned with is the possible Netflixitization of gaming. Where games aren't made to sell. But made to be put on the shelf in gamepass. Where games/shows don't need to be good, but just barely good enough for you to download, play & move on. Staying at their pig trough instead of their competitors pig palace. Not saying Sony's or Nintendos games are much better atm. It's more of a future outlook.

        • +4

That's also partly my concern with Microsoft's all-in approach to the subscription service. It seems like it's aiming more at quantity than quality. If you're putting all your big first party games on Game Pass day 1, there doesn't seem to be much incentive to go the extra mile. Are you really going to delay a big game by 6 months to give it the polish it needs to be great instead of just good? Unlikely they'd want to eat the cost of the additional development time if the extra quality they get doesn't result in extra sales to offset the additional costs.

My other concern is what the effect is on games that DON'T go onto Game Pass. I mean it's fine if you're making COD or GTA, they'll sell millions regardless. But the smaller games and the indie games without the big budget and big existing IP may struggle because so many people with Game Pass are unlikely to spend more money on those games when they already have dozens of games they haven't played available through their subscription.

          • +3

@AngusD: XGP will become the Spotify of gaming. Like Spotify, it'll be the end of a profitable, healthy-ish industry. Where the profits only begin at merchandising. You'll know when this hits endgame when Microsoft announces Ad-supported (free) XGP for all. But by then people will feel so "locked-into" it, that they couldn't imagine paying for full priced games anymore. Just look at gaming on Mobile. Has there ever been a successful full priced $99 game? It's dead Jim.

            • +3

@Valowick: That was exactly my thought, too. The only people making any significant money on Spotify are the ones at the very top (your Taylor Swifts etc) and Spotify themselves. Everyone else is just on there because it's the only way to make any money at all because nobody buys music anymore.

        • +1

The majority of games on GamePass are multiplatform, so they still need to attract 110m Sony users.
Plus there are Steam loyalists who will only buy PC games on there.
Then there are 100m+ (soon) Switch users who get a lot of 3rd party games as well (perhaps more indie), who will also pay for the game.

So sure GamePass may attract a certain type of game, but that's going to hurt the developer as they will only attract Game Pass players and not the 200 million + users who are on Steam/PS/Switch etc.

Also 3rd party games don't stay on Game Pass forever, so the games will still need to attract buyers outside of their stay on Game Pass.

As for 1st party, if MS start making rubbish games that are full of in-game purchases then people will move away from Game Pass back to Steam/Sony/Nintendo or just cancel their membership on Xbox and buy the games they want.

There is still plenty of incentive to make good games even if they will always be on GamePass.

        • +1

I don't agree with the "doom and gloom" feeling of Game Pass. I'm happy with the quality so far, and if they keep adding indie games like Spiritfarer, Carto, What Remains of Edith Finch, etc I'm all for it. 3 games I never would have played otherwise.
The same applies with Netflix, so I think you're being a bit too pessimistic.

      • +2

@eagerfisherman - It can work in their favour and encourage people to try a game they otherwise wouldn't. GP can have the game there for a few months and then remove once people are lured in.

Most AAA studios realised GTA style is the way to go. Lock them in for 10 years and provide DLC content.

Game Pass is the reason I bought a series X over a PC. My friends who were on the fence also ended up buying a XSX due to it.

    • +1

I support both camps (partly to keep competition going). Sony doesn't have a good solution (not one I can think of) to match GamePass. First of all, Microsoft has Azure cloud and that's a big part of Microsoft's revenue, so Microsoft is happy to keep on building its cloud infrastructure. GamePass is feasible due to that. Sony doesn't sell/own cloud services so they do need to pay for cloud services. In fact, Sony has started using Microsoft Azure (simply because Microsoft is willing to undercut Amazon AWS). Also, Sony's strategy is sell more AAA games. Microsoft is targeting services now.

An interesting question is that do we really want Sony to move to GamePass like model? One down side about GamePass is that you don't own any of those games so when you don't have GamePass, is your Series S|X going to be fun to play? Are we certain that these cheap Microsoft dirt cheap special loopholes will continue in the long run. Microsoft has not offered my main account any $1/month deal for close to 2 years now. We are not going to see Sony doing discounts like Microsoft if Sony were to offered another service to compete with GamePass. Also, do we really want to see inferior games on PS Plus (like what has happened to XBox Live Gold)?

Is owning some games better than the GamePass model (leasing)? I am not sure myself. While it does feel good to own some games, with GamePass, PS Plus, other OZB deals, my pile of shame is growing that I hardly really played games I owned that I already finished. As much as I really like GamePass, I know that without it, I have very limited number of games that I can play on my Series X.

  • +1

    Wow.

  • +11

Forza Horizon 5 looks incredible. Can't wait for that. Hard to believe my console is capable of that and it will just be available free to play Day One.

Well not free since I have the subscription. But no extra costs.

    • Any future expansion packs will not be available with Game Pass, FH series is way worth paying for season pass etc.

      • As above. Game Pass subscriber here but if you want to play Horizon long term then you really are better off buying the full game with the expansions.

        • That's the thing isn't it and Microsoft isn't exactly making that affordable, not for Forza Horizon 4 and doesn't look like the case Forza Horizon 5.

Also, does that mean Forza Horizon 4 will be leaving GamePass Ultimate?

          • @netsurfer: Define affordable. MS allow you to play on PC now if you make digital purchase and what more do you want?
MS let you play base game on day one of release using GamePass is a huge bonus and is loss making for EBgames etc.
You can buy expansion separately when on discount and it ties well with base game included in GamePass subscription, provided base game is still part of GamePass.

Look at competing platform they make you shell out top dollar for PS5 games and you can't play them on PC.

      • I'll end up grabbing it on sale. I did so with FH4 to get all the expansion packs. But I can play it Day One for free and buy it when it's inevitably 70% off in a sale or something ridiculous.

OzBargain will help me know when the time is right.

  • +2

Damn. I got the 3 months for $1 fulling intending to cancel. That's a pretty solid list of additions though.

  • +3

Xbox game pass ultimate was the best money I spent on gaming.

So many old and current games to choose and play from.

And the new releases this and next year coming to game pass day one are just icing on the cake.

  • Any word if xbox accessories will be available for flight simulator

    • +3

Pretty sure you can block posts like this.

My thoughts are almost nobody is going out and buying every title that comes out on Netflix, as most people just have Netflix or an alternative streaming service now. Whereas people without the game pass might become subscribers for a game (eg Yakuza) instead of forking out the $100 to buy it outright.

Sounds like a bargain worthy post to me.

    • +1

If you don’t want to see subscription based deals, you can always block them using the front page customisation.

  • +1

I don’t think MFS will run on the one S. Too bad.

    • +1

      Pretty sure it will

      • If it does, that’s great. Been waiting for it.

        • I think it’s only going to be for Series S|X

  • As a PS5 owner who basically only plays a few games it doesn't bother me but sure is an amazing feature!

It would be cool to try other games, and I agree like Netflix I barely watch anything but still pay!

  • Seriously amazing, had Yakuza in my cart after watching a few reviews saying how good it was even for a turn based game

  • Atomic Heart, Stalker 2 and Starfield make it a must have

    • I'd never heard of Atomic Heart, checked out the trailer, and yeah, that'll be a day 1 install.

      • Atomic Heart isn't coming anytime soon, so don't hold your breath. It's been years and they still haven't managed to show off a decent amount of gameplay. They still haven't announced anything resembling a release date.

        • Fair point.

That said, I've paid up for Game Pass through to 2024 so good to know something of what's in the pipeline.

  • Yay Yakuza like a dragon! I am sure Microsoft is going to buy Sega one day…lol

  • So they haven't worked out FS for Xbone yet?

  • Thanks for this, got a refund on steam for Dark Alliance, seeing I can get it free now with gamepass when it drops.

  • I hope stalker is like new metro

  • Looking forward to some hotas deals

  • Damn you MS, my gaming backlog is already big enough without more free (ish since I have already paid) games… Great service

  • AoE4? Ok I'm officially getting gamepass now. I hope it will network with Steam users well enough

  • Flight simulator was also announced for Xbox one.
It runs at 60 SPF (seconds per frame ;-)

    • +1

I've been playing it on my 3600X/2080 32gb ram PC. It doesn't get close to 60FPS. Looking forward to seeing what an optimised Xbox can do.

      • +1

They said 60 seconds per frame, not 60 frames per second lol

      • The update that is releasing with the Xbox release has massive performance improvements for PC too. Check the videos discussing it.

        Even on a 3060, they’re showing solid 1440p 60fps performance.

        • Sweet, when does this come out for PC?

Edit also does anyone know what time this is playable on Xbox?

  • -2

Love how people think Sony 'needs' to respond with something to compete with Gamepass. They don't! Their current model works fine, they have some of the most wanted 1st party games in the industry and they aren't going to ruin their brand model because Xbox wants to haemorrhage money taking a gamble on Gamepass.

You have to understand Xbox has taken a huge risk with Gamepass and this still may not be profitable in the long term, Sony consumer base is as strong as ever and if it keeps going like that, Xbox will not be able to sustain Gamepass in the long term. They have not been making profit from this, the idea of Gamepass is banking on the fact that they build a huge consumer base through various platforms. People always comment how cheap Gamepass is, the production cost of games is huge, don't bank on the fact that this is going to be the future of gaming. There is going to come a time where the cost of admission will become a lot higher and you will look at the games on offer and question is it worth it? In the meantime yes it is but I wouldn't be getting too excited. They are trying to reel people in first before they make you really pay!

    • So if it's affordable now, and a great deal now, you're suggesting don't use it now, while it's a great deal, because one day it might become more expensive and you won't want to use it? Seems like now is exactly the time to be extracting as much from the service as possible if you think it won't be such good value in the future.

I agree with a few of your points. The gamepass model doesn't really allow for spending enormous $200mil plus development budgets on many games. They can do a few as loss leaders to get people into the platform. I agree it's a huge risk. But there's a reason all the massive companies are heading toward these 'rundle' models of revenue.

However the flip side of that is it allows devs to take risks and innovate as you have less risk in making something new. A number of devs have said this. There's so many little games I would have never given the time of day if they weren't on gamepass.

In it's current state, its a very consumer friendly service and it's a very developer friendly service. What's not to like? Why should the consumer care if MS is making enough money if the consumers and developers are happy?

Do Sony need to 'respond'? Who knows. It's a gamble by Microsoft. Publishers will go where the money is. Gamers will go where the games are. Sony has held strong the last few generations by having that key library of exclusive titles. When gamepass came along, it meant xbox was a far better value platform, but you still did miss those key exclusives and Microsofts Xbone exclusives couldn't quite hold up to the likes of God of War and TLOU. However look at what's on the horizon. Sony is losing some major multiplatform titles to Microsofts buying frenzy, and will have to compete against not only a much larger library of exclusive first party titles, but also a far better value platform, which also has that bit more performance. That's a tough competition. Maybe the solution to that is to soldier on with that handful of huge budget, truly awesome 1st party games, and hope their player base won't mind missing out on some major titles at lower prices, because God of War is just that good.

I'm not saying to not jump on it now, I'm just warning people to not treat it like it's the second coming of Jesus Christ and think it's going to be like this forever. A lot of people don't have a forward thinking or business mindset, I'm just trying to open up people's minds about it.

I do think it's a good thing we have Gamepass, as you already know.. It creates competition, it currently gives the consumer value for money and is great for the evolution of gaming for the future and how we consume games and obviously gives some smaller devs more exposure for people to try their games. I'm not discrediting Gamepass at all, I definitely see the upside.

As mentioned I'm just giving people food for thought, warning them of the reality of it.

Age of Empires 4 buried in the list like it's some chump title?
