  • thanks OP

the 10 piece set doesnt seem to have a knife set?

Would not trust the RRP, but that seems very good deal if you need the knife set as well.

If you don't want the knives (Baccarat knives are rubbish IMO anyway), it's a further 20% off here or here…I believe Robin's and House are the same company?

The 10 piece is also cheaper here at $319.99 (use promo code 20EXTRA) with a 10 piece knife set and chopping board. The picture was a bit confusing as to what the "free gift" actually is, but it's listed here. As above, 100% don't believe the "RRP" of over $2.5k but for a bit over $300, you're getting a lot.

I don't even think you could buy Baccarat stuff at RRP even if you tired, it's always like 80% off. I really wish the ACCC would clamp down on these false sales.

House is the equivalent of ebgames, I've never seen them without a sale sign outside. Always seem to have clearance sales

        • +4

Always having a sale on something is fine, e.g. Coles etc. Never selling an item at RRP however really feels scammy.

          • @incipient: Couldn't agree more. What they're doing sounds like misleading and deceptive conduct to me.

    • with the $20 coupon then you get the knife block for $29 which isn't bad.

    • Agree. Here is a good review imho :

      https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/baccarat-damashiro…

Was originally going to get a set of Global knives but couldn't justify the value proposition compared to this deal.

If you want tbe knives only, can get them for $159.00 from house.com.au (with promo 20EXTRA)

      Thanks for tbe comments.

      • A $250 global 6/7 piece set, or a $160 10 piece baccarat set? I honestly wouldn't hesitate on the globals. Especially considering you buy these once. Saving $100 over 20 years is very minor.

There are just too many small knives in the 10 piece set for most people. I'd rather get less but better.

The review is mostly correct, however omits a few things I'd want to note.

Ergonomics is a big one. The globals hold brilliantly. I've only used baccarat ones on occasion, and the chunky handles make them rear heavy and a bit unwieldy.

Purity of steel is one too. I don't expect this set will have a problem as it's still a decent price, but cheap knives will use untested steels that maybe aren't quite to spec and rust faster, etc.

Also If you get knives sharpened by someone else, you want to get crazy hard ones so they keep thier edge.

I will never buy Baccarat on principle: I can't figure out their street price, and therefore if they're on sale.

They're always "80% off" more or less, but unless you memorise their (always changing) product line and then watch that one item, you can never figure out if something is ACTUALLY on sale or not.

And it's not reviewed well enough to buy at its usual price.

Thanks! You learn so much reading the comments section.

  • I was looking at the baccarat 3 pack santoku for practising with whetstone. They have massive different pricing between 2 same products except different handle colour. Lol.
    Black @ 219.99
    Brown @ 79.99 with 20% off brings to 63.99,
Not bad price for 3 piece. Can stack with SHIP35 for free shipping as well.

      lol
50% "off" is more like 100% added on

    • It's really hard to damage a knife irreparably so with a whetstone, so having a few tests on even a good knife isn't bad. I'd say you'd be better off putting that $80 into a better knife/whetstone.

If Baccarat brand is good, why are they not selling in overseas market like Le Creuset, Cuisinart and Tefal?

    • Baccarat is a "fine" brand, and they probably could, but it's a logistics thing. They don't have the capital to expand. There are plenty of amazing German/Japanese knives that aren't sold outside of their home countries.

      • +1

Most, if not all, Baccarat cookware is not made in Australia but China. Baccarat should be able to export them overseas if they can import them here. They may be just not good enough in other very competitive markets. Unlike Japanese knives, some are not sold overseas due to logistics because they are made in Japan.

        • +4

If you check who owns Baccarat, Arcosteel and about 50 more brands of cookware sold in Australia they all lead to same HK company Sky Chain Trading, so it's not a real brands like Tefal and others you mentioned, it's just a badge engineering for chinese designed and made stuff. So you most likely will be able find exactly same stuff in German stores but it won't be called Baccarat.

These are cast aluminium pans too. Personally something I'd never recommend. Especially on gas, the energy from the burner goes straight through without diffusing much at all. I'd strongly recommend 3 good steel/cast pans over a set of sub optimal options.

    • +2

Thanks for the heads up. Any Brand recommendations?

      • Just to be clear, I'm talking about materials here, rather than brand; really saying I don't recommend aluminium from any brand.

General recommendations apply otherwise. Happy to suggest what I personally like, but wanted to keep it "don't use aluminium" in this instance.

For anyone that is curious, or thinks I've lost it, Al has a good 4x the conductivity of iron/steel: https://thermtest.com/physics-explanation-of-thermal-conduct…

    • This is interesting. I have cast iron cookware as well. Will compare how I go with this set.

  • 7 Piece Damashiro Knife Block are NOT damaskus at all

    • Don't think they are insinuated to be Damascus Steel at all. Sure they have a etched pattern on them. But not claimed to be anything other than what they are.

  • This is $199 in house if you don't need the knives.

  • Planning to buy a stainless cook pan set. Which brand would u recommend? Thanks
