I was looking into some home automation and it seems the Shelly 1 WIFI units are pretty good bang for buck. Came across this deal… I ordered 2 packs, as in, 4 units.

Australian standards approved as well which is great.

In stock on July 9, 2021.

29-Jun-2021 Price decreased from $36.10 -> $35.10 slightly due to Currency fluctuations

  • Nice price! Free delivery is a winner if getting more than 2. Cheapest local is 19.99 + postage

  • Australian standards approved, but I assume the home insurance is still going to want this wired up by a licensed sparkie.

Make sure you cover your back and check your home & contents requirements for installation of devices like this with screw-down terminals running straight off your AC power.

' it was there when I bought the house ' =D

    • +1

yes, any mains electrical work requires a sparkie.

in regards to screw terminals, pretty much any fitting is screw terminal, lights, switches, etc so i dont see why that would be an issue

    • Also for anyone wanting to verify

  • Is this HomeKit compatible? I don’t want to be installing yet ANOTHER third party app just to control my smart device. It’s getting ridiculous.

  • Shame the 1PM isn’t available without the Australia Tax

    • Yeah agreed! This is going to be my 'starting' point in home automation so should be fun, hopefully in a few months i'lll work out shortcomings/limitations and upgrade to better spec as needed, i.e. my first one will be a sensor light outside which I want to be able to control via switch but also have it scheduled to turn on at night etc. in this case, i do not need the 1PM (no need for power usage info).

      • I have been trying to work out how to do exactly this. Do you mind sharing connection diagram mate?
I did contact an electrician who said not quite possible?

        • Like this?

The Shelly has a switch input, though may need to be momentary action.

          • +1

@Steptoe: There's an option in the firmware to set the switch type. For rocker switches you can set it to "Edge", which means the relay will toggle when the switch changes (either on->off or off->on).

        • the shelly units like these are always powered as opposed to 'typical' smart devices. so you don't need to leave the light switch on to access the 'smart' features.

the only way i can think of that krazy-dah would be enabling this feature is to have a 'smart' sensor and the 'smart' light. If you have a normal sensor light outside to turn on when it gets darker when sensing motion, it needs to already be energised but it wouldn't perform the task of a normal light during other hours

          • @peter05: Depends what @Krazy-dah means by "sensor light". If the traditional sensor light that is energised all the time, triggered by sensor or can be turned on with a quick off/on of the switch then you can do that with the Shelly - set the mode to "always on" then set the "Auto-on when off" to half a second or so. Relay will always be on but the switch trigger will open the relay with the auto-on closing it again.

    • 1L too as I have no neutrals at my switches. Would like to put in a bunch and replace switches with the clipsal bell press mechs to finish it off nicely (if I could get those cheap enough as well)

      • (Get your sparky to) put the Shelly 1 at the light, inside the light fitting if room or in a junction box next to it. There should be neutral there.

    Nice price! Got 3 :)

  • Is there a 12v option? Cant spot it.
Wanting to turn on a pump

    • +1

This one works with 12V DC.

  • I have 2 Shelly's, one on my front gate and the other on the roller door. The only real issue I have with them is the app takes forever to load. Not so much a problem for me because I use them through Home Assistant and Alexa.

    • Ah so this is the exact use case i'm hoping to find out. I have one for my garage door, I wanted another for an electric gate. My thinking is an electric gate motor operates almost identical to a garage door motor. Is my logic correct? I was just going to send the signal wire down some gel-filled cat5 to the motor.

      • Yep, same as a garage door motor. Requires a dry contact input, generally as a pulse. With the shelly app you can set the relay to turn off after 'n' seconds, so you can effectively make it pulse for say half a second.

Am I right in understanding that this is a switch that goes straight into wiring but has the same effect as a wifi plug?

If so, is the only benefit of this the aesthetics of not having a wifi plug? What are some applications that a wifi or zigbee plug cannot do that this can?

    • +3

The idea is that these are small enough to retrofit into existing wiring in the wall box itself and make dumb lights smart (while you can use for a powerpoint there's probably less benefits vs a plugin apart from aesthetics like you say). Aside from that, these are designed to always be powered but use the switch as a trigger, firstly meaning you can use your existing switch to turn on and off your lights and secondly you won't lose the smarts when someone comes along and switches it off at the wall.

      • Thanks for that. Good summary. So if someone does switch it off at the wall, and then you use wifi to turn it back on, some luddite who will remain nameless, could end up flicking the switch twice to turn it off?

        • +1

Yep, but a nice feature of the Shellys is you can configure the button mode. In toggle mode they would need to flick the switch on and off again.
There is also edge mode, in which case a flick of the switch toggles the state either way so flicking the switch on would turn the light off in your scenario.
Just depends on their OCD level whether they can handle a switch being in the opposite position :D

Good explanation of the button modes here

  • An alternative to this is the Sonoff Mini R2 which is currently selling for $19.67 (delivered) from BangGood via their AU warehouse.

For a comparison of the two, see here

  • No more free post for prime?

    • There is… you must spend $49 though.

  • Price update $35.10 !!

  • Only received 1.

    • Well that sucks but good chance you'll be getting 1 free then. Amazon is pretty good about that sort of thing if you jump on live chat, usually their first response is a no return refund.

  • Bit of a price difference from a sonoff but I guess these are Australian approved 👍😁
