Same deal from Bing Lee and Myer

Question for those that have it, does the Black Truffle (BES878BTR) model have black coloured plastic on the bits that are normally stainless steel coloured on the stainless steel (BES878BSS) model.
I note the Black Stainless Steel (BES878BST) model is about $200 more.

I've got this model and it's absolutely fantastic, hasn't skipped a beat. Grab some quality beans and milk, you're good to go.
Grinder is very customizable/configurable, quality tamper and a nice compact design.

      • Agreed! For the price it’s amazing.

I would highly recommend, I’m selling mine though (see post below for details) only as I upgraded to an e61 DB.

Great stepping stone to serious coffee making at home.

Honestly dont trust productreview anymore, so many winging 1 star reviews about stuff that doesn't even matter, relates to service or user error.

This is a killer machine. Great coffee, super adjustable and super quick to heat up and begin making drinks. Have owned for about a year now, no issues and make like 4-5 cups of joe a day.

@OP - judging by the pictures the black truffle and black stainless has equal amounts of black surfaces. I have a black truffle model and it looks great

      • Hey ajole

Do you have the Black Truffle model
Just trying to see what the black surfaces are made from - plastic or steel?

        • I think its plastic (top) and aluminium (sides) but all has a similar slightly anodised kind of feel. I haven't treated it too gently yet I haven't managed to scratch it.

          • @ajole: Thanks
I’m weighing up whether the Black would be easier to keep clean (hide finger marks) vs the stainless steel one

Been using it for a few months and it's huge improvement from my previous barista express model.

Only downside is boot up time is like 4-5 minutes & even better leave it on for a while before use it after then. However it does have auto turn on timer.

      • +4

4-5 minutes? The Barista Pro starts up and is ready to pull a shot within 3 secs.

If you need to get the group head to temp, just run a shot of water through it, done.

Also, there is no "auto on" feature on the Barista Pro, I think you may be confusing this with the Dual Boiler which does have that feature, and probably takes 4-5 mins to come up to temp.

        • Ah right. sorry, I thought this is oracle.

    • Mine has been going flawlessly since October last year, make sure to clean it routinely like all coffee machines and it'll last for a long time.

    • I also have this model - grabbed it late 2019 or something. Its absolutely fantastic! They were regularly on sale in the 600's then though I guess covid pricing ended that

This is one of our favourite purchases and is used 4x a day

Re double boiler - yes that would be handy though we havent missed it at all. If doing 4 or 5 coffees I pull the shots then do lots of milk (no need to make each coffee in its entirety each time)

  • Jesus, is that machine in the picture grinding charcoal or something?

  • Can I pricematch this with JB Hifi/Myer or other stores?

    • Yes but not with the discount.

  • All I want is an Oracle touch to come on sale. Nothing.

    • Yup, i second that too

    • Don’t do it! Get a nice e61 machine for a similar price that is way better. And will last longer

      • Wife wants to not tamper or froth milk manually.

  • I think this model has single boiler. I saw somewhere that dual boiler is better. Does that make too much of a difference?

    • If you are making multiples at a time then you'll wish you had a dual boiler

      • lets say we have visitors and need to make 5-6 coffees. Do you think this model cannot handle it?

        • It can handle just fine. As long as your guest aren't expecting you to pump it out at cafe speeds.
Just watch a video of someone doing it on youtube and then x5 for how long it will take.

I would recommend a dual boiler system if you drink coffee with frothed milk and if you have to make coffee for multiple people.

I have the pro model and find that it's fine for up to 2 cups of coffee at a time but the extraction begins to become inconsistent as I switch between frothing and extracting. I do not know if the dual boiler system has a similar issue but I would guess not.

I also highly recommend getting a separate quality grinder so you can pull more consistent shots.

        • Yep. Milk frothing will be slow though!

      • +1

You can still pull 2 shots with a single boiler. Just need the portafilter with 2 spouts, which comes with the machine btw.

    • I've had this machine for 2 years now. a dual boiler feature would make it a lot more efficient.
The benefits of a dual boiler is that you can extract your beans and also steam your milk at the same time, saving you 20-30 seconds in an overall ~90 second process in making a cup.

    • 3 reasons:
      - 58mm portafilter
      - non integrated grinder
      - steam milk and make coffee at the same time

      • +1

Also simple to perform Slayer mod for pressure profiling.

  • +1

I've been hoping for the dual boiler to be included in this sale - sadly not.

    • It's around $999 at the moment at Bing Lee for the stainless stell and Harvey Norman for the black one

      • Thanks - Had checked that this morning. Do you think thats the best it'll be for a while?

        • The best recently was around $800 a few weeks ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/628689) but we missed the boat.
I think once EOFY is gone prices are going to increase by a lot unfortunately, just get a price protection if you can such as 28 degrees and you're covered.
I believe the regular price is more around $1200.

          • @ValouSydney: Yeah, I didnt have the cash unfortunately. Hopefully the sales come back in. Doesn't look like bing lee's price is a sale price?

  • Is this genuinely worth it or should I spend more to get the dual boiler? I kinda like the practicality (all in one machine).

    • +1

It’s awesome. I almost like it better than the DB which we have at work, dual boiler is good cause it uses 58mm port afilters though

      • Thank, is there noticable difference between the 54 vs 58 portafilter with the quality?

  • For me, it's mostly solo coffees so single boiler is fine

Agree that for the times when you are entertaining, a dual boiler would be handy, but it's not often enough for me to justify the $$ premium + grinder and a bigger machine on the kitchen bench for the 99.5% of the time.

    • +1

Just to note these are not single boilers and they use a thermoblock system to heat the water.

Integrated grinder is not the best for quality or if it breaks but hey if your only using it solo chances are it will last you at least 4-5years and you can still produce a decent espresso shot with some nice coffee beans.

      • Yep sorry, thermocoil, not boiler

  • If anyone wants one of these from brisbane second hand drop me a message. 18mths old perfect condition $500.

I bought a dual boiler e61, I would highly recommend this
machine though for the price it’s exceptional.

  • I note the Black Stainless Steel (BES878BST) model is about $200 more.

May I ask where you can find the "the stainless steel (BES878BSS) model" for $200 less please?

    Thanks
