Surely when they ask for payslip you are screwed?

    • True.

Offer available to Australian based Bain Capital and Bain & Company employees and new Card Members only.

Worth a try, they can only decline your submission.

They can also approve your card application, issue the card, charge the fee, and not give the bonuses.

  • How much Velocity points are worth ?
I am looking at Flight from Melbourne to Canberra and with points it seems more expensive.

    • Are you sure you're looking at Velocity Reward Seats?

    • Points have different values to different people. Make sure you're looking at reward seats, not the everyday seats, should be 7800 points for that route or so

      • @kerfuffle @happychild100

Ya … If booked from Virgin directly on 7th July … its $168 total for return flight … 8:45am depart and 3pm return.

        If booked on points its 11,700+15400= 27100 points. Considering 0.75cpp via classifieds … its 27100*(0.75/100) = $203.25.

Or am i missing something ?

You generally wouldn't pay the taxes with points, as it's not great value. Though the taxes on that route are a bit high so in your case, the cash option is probably still better. 5400 + $36 going up, 7800 + $44 coming back.

In a busy time like day the school holidays though, flights might be $200-300 each way and the reward seats might look better then.

In the end, the value is whatever you feel comfortable with! Upgrades and business class seats will always be the best value, but that's up to you.

Yeah but (for example with this credit card) you’re not buying the points at 0.75c. You’re actually buying them close to $0 if you value the card perks.

Purchasing points only really works out for business class or above when value yield per point can be up to around 4c

          • @ajole: This logic really bugs me. Just because the points essentially cost zero, doesn't mean you should just throw them away. It is called opportunity cost. For example if I wanted to be generous and book a flight for a friend using my points, make no mistake that is exactly the same thing as transferring them cash to help them out.
