  • XPS 15 $1,119.29: finally a good hard disk, good memory and finally Dell realised that there is Bluray technology available, but you pay for all of this.
Also I don't think that the nVidia GT540 is aligned with the other components, they saved some money on this.

    • +1

I just updated the post. There's a cheaper setup minus the Bluray.

      XPS 15 $1,049.23 (u510302au)

      • You did a great job in the description.

The one I mentioned has a "very" good configuration but the GPU is not at the same level.

  • Do you think the 17 inch is a good buy at this price?

    • @pwanda not sure about the price but you should know that Dell installed 2 hard drives 750GB each in a RAID 0 configuration.

This configuration is only suitable for temporary and "quickly" storing data which would be then transferred to a better storage system.

The down side of a RAID 0 configuration is the high risk of loss of data so could you imagine what will happen to Windows and all other applications? Calling Dell support forever?

      • Whoah really - RAID0?! That is incredibly irresponsible of Dell if that's what they're doing.

Where does it mention RAID0 though? I thought they would just slap two HDDs in there and call it a day, considering that's the safer, easier and cheaper setup.

        • I read it on Dell web site regarding another laptop here on Ozbargain just days ago, it had 1.5 TB (2x 750GB) mirrored in RAID 0.

The configuration from this laptop is just the same 1.5 TB total storage which suggests the 2 drives (750 GB x2) are mirrored RAID 0 otherwise Dell should said 2x 750 GB hard drives.

If you really want to buy this laptop, you should call Dell and be very specific with your questions.

Edit: the RAID 0 mirroring setup was specified on the Alienware laptops, surely Dell technicians though making the laptops run faster at the expenses of reliability.

Also look at POWERevolution's replay just below, his configuration has 2TB total storage stripped in RAID 0. What a disgrace!

    • the screen resolution is disencouraging me to buy one

      • +1

"Discouraging" I believe is the word you're looking for :P

        • yeah, sorry wrong spelling.

      • it allows you to upgrade the screen for a bit more in the process..

    • I am thinking of getting one, unless anyone in OZB can recommend a better one!!

      Any ideas guys?

i just bought a xps 14z from the dell outlet factory for $849.00 so go to http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product… first to see if its cheaper there. BTW they are all new, not refurbished and it will only take 5 working days to get.

    • i dont see xps 14z on the link provided?

      • +1

there were 2, i bought 1 and i guess the other one has sold. the good bargains go very quickly

        • may i know ur specs?

    • Lol talking about off topic! :)

Anyways, better you build it or the shop does it for a little charge and you get much better value.

Check this configuration on Whirlpool for around $800 you get nearly the same components also you get a reliable "brand" psu and case: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…

    • Try the XPS8300 $1,469, $640 off deal. even less if you remove the Gizmo setup.
      It includes Blu-Ray, 560Ti Graphics and a 24" Monitor.
You can't build it for the price. Not upgradable video wise though!

    • Don't stripe on 2 drives - one drive dies and you lose your data. Mirror on 2 drives or stripe plus checksum on 3.

  • Personally, I think Dell's discounted Logitech N550 laptop table/speaker is a bargain - $53 includes shipping!
LogitechShop's "discounted" price is $75; and, lowest on SI is $42.00 excludes shipping.

    • That is!

  • hmmm am noticing Dell are discounting more and more on the laptops recently. Am tempted to get one at these prices

  • I really like the XPS 17 $1,329.29 (u510306au)

Does anyone know of a similar laptop at a better price ?
