  • JO Beans…..LOL

    +1 for the name.

  • Not gonna lie. New thumbnail completely threw me.

    • Me too. Not sure where it came from…I will update the url and see if that helps…

Cheers - got some Columbia :)

I've had a lot of different beans from different deals and local roasters but have not enjoyed the ones from here (Sumatra/Enterprise). Good prices and fast shipping though, so recommend giving them a try from that perspective.

    • +2

ive tried about 15 different beans, these (Sumatra) are my top 3. Kept the grind and tamp settings for 30 days without touching them and still getting excellent pour and crema. Also strong enough to get me going and doesnt give me runs. Everyones got different tastes.

  • Any grinder recommendations? Does OzB have a favourite?

    • I may be able to help! What is the rest of your setup like? And what sort of coffee do you enjoy making?

      • +1

Long mac topped up…. it's a Perth thing.

And I have a Smeg Machine.

        • Haha okay - I won't enter into cup title politics but if you make espresso:

The classic entry grinder I would recommend first is the Baratza Sette 270 - $450 - $550
I really wouldn't recommend anything (atleast electirical) below this if espresso is important to you.

If you want to notch it up a bit and have something that is going to give you 1st class grounds, single dosing and last you forever, look into the D64, a Chinese manufactured flat burr grinder (think the Ozbarg version of a Niche Zero - except flat burrs) - $650 - $700.

          • @Junglegreen: you consider the sette 270 as an entry level grinder? can you elaborate a little please. ive watched and seen many great reviews. i have ranciliio silver and need to upgrade the grinder (currently using a very old braun bladed grinder)

            • +1

@kimmoth: if you are just starting out, you could just get away with a budget grinder but you definitely want a burr grinder over blade.

budget grinders are just commercial appliances up to $300ish like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro and the Sunbeam EM0480 and EM0700.

entry level all sit between $450 to $600 range like Rancilio Rocky, Macap M2M, Compak K3, Eureka Mignon Manuale and Mignon E, Baratza Sette 30 and 270. the Sette 270 sits in the upper range of entry level. recommend checking out coffeesnobs forums for 2nd hand units, people sell M2M and K3 for $300 quite often.

i have a Sunbeam EM0450 and a Quamar Q50P (second hand from CS) myself. the sunbeam is much easier to use and I'm still testing the quamar to see if it's really an upgrade.

              • @Kraise: I'll check out the coffeesnobs, thanks. In the entry level range, which would you recommend?

                • +1

@kimmoth: Macap M2M and Compak K3 are pretty safe bets, they have a ridiculously long life (I've seen 10+ year old units), they are stepless/microstepped, and are solid performers which makes for a good starter for espressos. They are frequently sold on CS for $300 and under which is a real bargain.

The high turnaround frequency is mainly because people tend to have bad cases of upgraditis so they'll want a Eureka Specialita or a D64 or a Niche Zero or soon it'll be a Eureka Single Dose Mignon Oro (in September) and one day they'll end up with a Weber EG 1 with SSP burrs (+$6k), it's a never ending cycle haha…

                  • @Kraise: I checked out coffeesnobs, not sure to thank or hate you. I found a k3 touch for $300 so I'm now falling victim to if I spend an extra 150 I can buy a sette 270, well a new k3 is only an extra 130.

                    • @kimmoth: haha it's up to you really, but keep in mind that extra $150 is an extra 50% on $300 and in true ozb spirit, it's not much of a deal.

can't say much about the new K3 Touch because I can only find RRP 600-650 from a simple google search so I still consider $300 pretty fair.

                      • +1

@Kraise: Definitely not in the true spirit of ozb, but sometimes it's fun to spend money. Thanks for your help

            • @kimmoth: Hi kimmoth. I do, there are definitely cheaper electrical burr grinders but in terms of uniformity - you are only going to frustrate yourself. The Sette 270 would go great with a Rancilio Silvia (they are often paired together and I would argue make one of the greater entry - mid home consumer combos. The Sette is loud but you are getting the best uniformity and speed for the price. Keep in mind, I am someone who believes in a higher spending budget for grinder over machine when it comes to espresso. Definitely look into the D64 also (keeping in mind I don't know your budget). Hope that helps! Feel free to DM me with any further questions!

              • @Junglegreen: I've read that the sette 270 is loud but it grinds the coffee quite quickly so it balances out. I would be very happy to spend the extra for a better machine however the Mrs might have something to say. Which means I'm left dreaming about the d64. Thanks for the reply

    • I like the Sumatra and the Saratoga blends. (i've probably had 20 bags total so far… got another 2 on the way)

I have tried the enterprise, and i personally don't like it as much as the other 2 listed above… but is still decent.

      I only buy whole beans.

    • Hario Skerton Plus has been pretty good for me and can be found reasonably cheap. Yeah, it's a hand grinder, but it doesn't take too long to get enough coffee to make an espresso with. Just make sure you get the grind set up well, and sometimes the thumb screw can get jammed and be hard to remove but just use pliers if that happens. Or fit a washer under the screw.

      • +1

That is exactly what I have! It is a good one but looking to give the wrist a rest.

        • i'm almost at the point of rigging up something to the screw head so I can attach my ozito cordless drill easily and still use the handle when needed without a huge hassle. This is the OzB way :)

      • I'd recommend spending a bit more and upgrading to the Timemore C2. While I loved my Hario, it took way too long to grind vs the C2 (1.5 min vs 20 s for around 15g). And the C2 isn't too much more expensive: about $70 shipped from Aliexpress and takes three weeks to arrive.

I also don't brew espresso, but wouldn't the Skerton (and I guess most entry-level hand grinders, including the C2) grind too coarsely for true espresso without a pressurised porta-filter?

        • Good call re the timemore, I'll have a look.

On the hario, I've only got a breville machine with the horrible pressurised basket setup, at the 2 or 3 finest settings the grind is too fine and blocks the basket. So until I get a better machine it's not too bad. Maybe I'll get a gaggia, Silvia etc at some point. Really depends on your machine I guess, but it can go fine enough to block the basket consistently on mine.

  • Can't order more with a full freezer unless they do delayed delivery.

  • +1

Thanks - giving them a try as Merlo have been dropping the ball for the last 6 moths and I'm looking for a change. Decided to try the Enterprise Blend.

    • I have tried a few and they are all quite good.

  • +2

    Yep, v good coffee

  • This is my go-to coffee bean supplier.

Favourites are Twilight (Mrs fav, cappuccino) and Sumatra (my fav, espresso).

  • Still working through the Pegasus blend from last deal but really enjoying it. Only drink one cup a day.

Will probably try Twilight blend next deal.

  • can anybody recommend the best tasting one for cold brew coffee?
