Yea, went out and bought 3 …. NOT

  • will the Government take my SUV/Ute/4x4 ?

  • Cheers, bought 2.

  • My dream is to own a Tesla one day.
    Price getting closer.

    • Yep same…have been keenly looking at the second market for something thats within my budget but it seems teslas don't depreciate much at all. We just need some government fleets to pick up teslas then flood the market with used model 3s in a couple of years :)

  • If you don’t have a garage
    Don’t buy it.

    • what if you have a driveway, could you just stick a wall charger on the side of your house?

      • use ur neighbours electricity when they're not looking (thats why they are charged at night).

    • Agree, if you don't have a garage to park overnight and charge this is all a $70k gimmick

      • Definitely not for poor people on the dole eh Andy. They can go back to collecting kmart gift cards.

  • Great price for the Model 3. But needs to drop more in price for it to be a real contender and compete in our market, in addition to our govt embracing EV rather than penalising them with that stupid km tax.

    • Govt taxes are nothing to do with Tesla though.

      • Point is it impacts Tesla and its attractiveness to consumers.

  • +5

My fave comment in this whole thread is the people complaining that you need to charge it daily or needs a garage etc.
I mean, you can treat it the same as a ICE car, like park it and drive it and then once a week or fortnight or x period of time juice it back up.
I mean it's not rocket science.
Prices only going to get better as more adoption and then the charging infra will only get better.
ICE cars are on their last legs once battery tech gets another notch or two better.
I'll be jumping on Model Y personally as my situation more suited to Crossover/SUV style and i'll be living in small apartment with no garage available, i'll be charging it up when i go the shops once a week.

    • Yeah, some of these comments are fuelled by the ICE bots and other hired goons online. You can easliy pick em when you scroll through these threads anywhere not just on OZB.

    https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/council/petitions/electron…

    • You assumed that "they" actually care. Losing 1 or 2 votes don't scare them at all especially in safe states like VIC Labor.

      • No comment, no assumptions, just sharing to whomever may be interested :) Peace

      • +2

This is so true… They only brought this in now as most people don't own EV's yet and realise how stupid it is and what they have done.

I'm actually really sad about it. Environmentally, economically and shocked that deceitful conduct is allowed . A polly can produce pages of lies and innuendo's and get a bill passed. This should worry everyone (regardless of the context of the legislation).

I have listed at least 15 lies in the forum post and will only highlight the main ones here:

EV's actually DO pay tax (even though Tim Pallas blatantly repeated they don't). There is this preconception that EV's are free to run?? Energy is simply in a different form, Petrol for electricity, and maintenance items such as tyres, lubricants, battery replacements etc all attract GST…just like a petrol car (all of which go towards the same revenue as excise). Someone asked me the other day (and a person in a high up position), why do you need to charge at home as don't these cars recharge themselves as you go along (face palm). Electricity is pretty expensive in a lot of Australia…everyone should realise this. There is a $ cost involved. Also EV's pay a premium price/ stamp duty/ insurance etc etc all going back to the same tax bucket as excise…Such an obvious, yet allowed lie.

I paid $16k for my PHEV. Currently petrol is by far the cheapest fuel to use.. Let me say that again, petrol is much cheaper. I'm no millionaire, but this bill is asking me tp pay 2c / km on top of the fuel I use and the electricity I pay for?? For no justified reason whatsoever…yet it still passed!

BTW, the EV road tax doesn't actually "go to road maintenance" (as it states), it just goes to general revenue (which actually pays trucks a credit …and they cause the most road maintenance requirements). But hey, we dont have a decent rail network, so we need trucks.

Lastly, the lie that the government needs to spend tax dollars on charging infrastructure. This is the responsibility of private business. Do you think if everyone drives EV's, AGL would have no interest in installing EV chargers everywhere?? Hopefully some people are seeing the light here?

Also the bill uses language such as the tax is "a fair amount' …shouldn't there be some form of due diligence in Parliament? Ummm 2.5c/ km…as it is ummm…a fair amount…honestly!! and why isn't there a penalty for blatant lieing to the public. In the outside world this conduct is known as fraud! But somehow year after year of lie upon lie..and they all do it…because its allowed! Lets fine them and put that in general revenue…we would have the best infrastructure in the world!!

With Modern monetary policy (MMP) this tax is NOT even required (so another lie). A tax is used to slow inflation, or discourage or decentivise something (ie smoking and the tobacco tax). Why on Earth would you be looking to discourage EV uptake? The Fed government know this and haven't done it. If that doesn't tell you enough, when the leader of the Labour Party calls his own state Labour leaders tax "absurd", you know something is a miss.

Lastly, even if you are totally against EV's, this should be ringing alarm bells for you. Pandora's box is open. Soon Ev's will be paying 2.5c/km and petrol cars probably 5c/km and Diesel 7c/km or more (as this would be the ethical thing to do under MMP). Then they will probably double that the next year. The tax is coming to EVERYONE, guaranteed.

Other states you still have a chance. If any person or party has this kind of crap on the agenda…do not vote for them. Hopefully in Victoria common sense will prevail and it gets retracted once they are voted out. Quite clever though hiding it in rego legislation (which the feds dont control and cant do anything about),unless there is something somewhere in the constitution that says you cant introduce a tax under a false pretense.

        • Dude what PHEV did you buy? Mitzu??

          • @Naigrabzo: Yeah, with a small battery 2c/km is ridiculous.

But even a larger battery PHEV, with the premium price paid plus battery depreciation taken into account, the tax is an absolute rort… financially, environmentally, morally, ethically… Take your pick..

            • @tunzafun001: I feel your pain.

HOLY CARP!!! IT is 61k driveaway for a big one. Don't know about anyone else but I would never pay 60k for Mitzi.

16k is fine though. How much kilometerage on yours??

so let me get this right, unless im a doctor and/or part of a medical affiliated society, i must pay this arbitrary $1500 amount more, which is usually negotiated away at any dealer apart from tesla.

or have i got this totally wrong… !?

    • I work in retail and I don’t have to pay the delivery fee.

      • How did you get it removed?

        • My employer is part of the corporate program. 3 year maintenance plan is also included.

  • It won't be long before governments slap on a big tax on EV to offset the loss in the huge revenue from the petrol tax. They wait until the pig is fat before taking it to the abattoir like communists do.

    • +1

Victoria is already on the tax train

    • +4

See my above comment. There is no revenue loss, simply shifted (I did the maths in the auto forum if you want to see it). Besides that, the state get $0 from petrol anyway (but they do now get extra revenue from the extra stamp duty on the purchase price).

The reality is they are looking to privatise Vic Roads, so trying to boost the income streams for a sale.

So screw the EV owners over first (as they are a minority) and shouldn't be able to vote us out. Then sell it off (to make the balance sheet look good temporarily) and the new private owners can then screw over the petrol / diesel drivers royally! It's coming. Tim Pallas has zero concern for the people of Victoria.

      40 Year contract as well…

      https://www.itnews.com.au/news/vicroads-to-partner-with-priv…

Ask SA how the privatisation of the Electricity grid is working out (yes, they sold the grid to a Chinese owner).. just chuck in a SA postcode to see what electricity costs (I got 52c/kwh)

Wake up everyone…REGARDLESS OF YOUR STATE or fuel type..this is a canary in the coal mine.. be ready for it, vote this rubbish out before it starts. Write to your local member and tell them if they support this they wont get your vote. This is the only way to stop it.

      • @tunzafun001, Come on man. Only old people know about voting. No old person reads this forum.

        • +1

Too true.. even worse these days people don't even know who they are voting for. Not that I can really blaim them.

          Classic scenario…

A mate was complaining when Tony Abbott got in…asked him who he voted for and he proudly named an independent..who I pointed out gave all his votes to Tony Abbott.

Hence suggesting to write to whoever is currently "running the ship" and or looking to "run the ship" in your local electorate and point out an EV tax will lose your vote.

30 seconds googleling email addresses, cc them all in together. Send email.

…But it's probably easier to pay thousands over the next few years and complain about it ;)

          • @tunzafun001: Agreed. I think the genera public is disillusioned by the govt etc. In Australia it matters a little less but the USA it can literally be difference between life n death.

Still; we should take interest in these goons who have tax free salaries and have our livelihood in their hands. The good thing in Australia is that at least they are mostly educated.

          • @tunzafun001: With the exception of Tim Pallas who believed an electric car makes its own power as it drives along….. That's as basic physics dumb as it gets! … And the cross benchers believed it and voted the bill in based on this.

Up there with the Trump bleech + UV light vaccine

What is the carbon footprint of the EVs from cradle to grave? I'm pretty sure that it is NOT carbon neutral. You need to also include the carbon footprint of you obtaining the money to buy the car in the calc.

    • +3

Its not carbon neutral as they are not drawing down CO2 from the air but they are just so vastly less polluting than fossil vehicles. An EV can make up for its manufacture emissions in CO2 savings compared to driving a fossil car within 3yrs (charging on solar as ongoing emissions are essentially zero). After this time the fossil car keeps polluting and is building more and more CO2 footprint (this is also true of just hanging on to an old fossil vehicle).

Its not a magical carbon neutral or negative solution, its just much better than fossil powered transport for the environment and our health.

Interesting thought though. It could be carbon neutral/negative if manufacturers offset the carbon cost of production and the vehicle was charged with solar/offset solar after purchase.

Only gripe I have with the Model 3 is that it's damn small for the price you pay.

    • +1

Like smaller than a Toyota corolla sedan?

      • +1

Slightly longer and wider than Corolla sedan but smaller than a Camry

It is probably the LV bag of cars. You don't need value for money because you won't need the space to carry money after Elon has cleaned you out.

As indirect shareholder I thank all the buyers.

        • +1

compared to the cost of kona ev, eniro ev, mg es ev, the tesla model 3 seems like the best deal for an EV

          • +1

@nightqueen: I'd go an sit in all of them and test drive if you are really interested. Dimensions don't say much. You might get a bigger engine bay and lose cabin space.

            • @netjock: This is the best advice but hardly rocket science. Definitely need to test drive; HECK rent one for a day and see whether it suits you. It's only like $300 for the day.

    • It's about the same size as a 3 series inside. The back seats are roomy for the class.

      • surprisingly the back seats are roomier than our previous F25 X3 because there's no transmission hump in the middle. Also the boot is longer than an X3 which surprised me, but you have less vertical space. I tested this by stacking a pram and seat one in front of the other, which you can do in the model 3, but not the X3.

EDIT: I also have a current gen N80 hilux and by comparison the back seats are really small. I think all dual cabs are probably the same. This is surprising because it looks massive outside especially with a lift and 33 muddies etc.

      • I find the raised floor in the back extremely uncomfortable, but yes there is room for a relatively small car.

This car should really be around 50-55k
Interior is kinda cheap and brand hasn’t got pedigree of German rivals.

    • +1

This car should really be around 50-55k

      That is the China price.

    • +1

Why exactly should it be 50k, it already cheaper than the German counterpart, better performance, tech and lower running cost & interior is subjective. I prefer the clean apple look.
German cars have worst reliability than Japanese and Korean cars. Have fun when warranty runs out.

    • hydrogen seems to be the fuel of the future. However, with current costs of setting up refueling stations, together with the fact that green hydrogen (hydrogen produced from renewables) account for only 1% of total production (https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/green-hydrogen-….), I doubt it will be the prevalent form of energy for consumer transport. I can see hydrogen as the preferred fuel for commercial/industrial use (e.g. cargo ships, refinery, etc). maybe for household use when this becomes available (https://lavo.com.au/)

      • +2

+1 to that. Hydrogen is a dead end in the car space.
Honda have just abandoned their production. https://thedriven.io/2021/06/23/honda-discontinues-clarity-h…
It may be useful for heavy transport, but, even there, battery model semis are developing rapidly.
Not only are fuel cells themselves very inefficient, the whole production chain will only be viable for larger scale usage.
Of course, only truly green hydrogen from solar/wind should be considered, not that made from coal and gas which the LNP is trying (unsuccessfully) to pass off as "clean".

      • +2

Hydrogen requires an extra conversion, so extra efficiency losses than pure EV. Hydrogen is already quite a bit more expensive than petrol, so running costs will be higher than petrol in terms of $ / km……and the Dynamic Dumbass Duo… Dale Andrew's/ Tim Pallas have already thrown a 2.5c per km tax on Hydrogen vehicles!

Totally agree Hydrogen tech is absolutely vital moving forward though (especially for boats, planes). We could have done it 20 years ago…but still haven't. The government clearly have their bread buttered (election campaign funding) by the petro chemical industry…and no one seems to care. The ZLEV / alternate fuel tax didn't even make a single news headline when it started on July 1!!

    • Launched in 2014.

  • the complexity, number of moving parts, in an electric car are fewer than an internal concession engine, so i would expect maintenance to be simpler and cheaper, also some vehicles like tesla have aluminium bodies, so corrosion should be less of an issue. with battery replacement being the big maintenance cost, i would anticipate the lifespan of an EV like a tesla to be good.
also as a battery recycling industry opens up we should see some new local industries.

mechanics moving from internal combustion to EV might get trickier based on their experience working and fault finding electrics if manufactures limit access to diagnostic equipment.

    • Seriously how many corrosion issues have you seen with cars in the last 20 years ?

I had a 76 corolla in 91 full of rust , holes you could fit your fist through

Wifes 17 year old corolla still looks new

    • Only the Model S has an aluminium body, the Model 3 & Y have regular steel bodies. Besides, very few vehicles these days are scrapped because of rust issues.

    • Dude, Corrosion is never an issue for me in the last 20 years. 40 years ago definitely.

  • Just got one!

  • -5

No way i'm going out of my way to charge the car, even if it only takes 5 minutes. I refuel my diesel ute using the BPme app, so i don't even have to go inside. Takes a few seconds to process a payment. There are zero chargers anywhere around here, i haven't seen one in years. If they start putting them in places people go to often like at Bunnings, Woolworths, at schools etc, then that would possibly make it more convenient. But there are no electric utes, so that rules that out. I can't exactly put rocks and mulch in the back of a tiny tesla!

Has anyone been able to pre-order to secure the discount, and beat the delays this might cause? it's only for the first 25,000 EV sales, I wonder how long it will take to reach that number in NSW.

    • This is a good question indeed.

  • What will be a way to participate on the corporate program?

    Thanks,

  • Am a little confused thought I check

    • On the last page, it says driveaway price but the $3000 Victorian ZEV subsidy is not included int hat price . It's only shown on the "after subsidy" price. Do we then have to apply for a rebate??

    • also, is it only for the base model and not for the long range version?

    • I also can't get the price mentioned : The final driveaway price I got was $66543 , with the victoria ZEV of $3000 and even with the corporate program waiving the delivery fee of $1375 , the final price calculated is $62168

    • If you click on the long range model and switch back to the standard range then the upgraded wheel option is auto selected.

The ZEV discount only applies for the SR+. Should come to just under $62k DA (and less with the waived delivery fees). It automatically gets applied prior to your final invoice and payment.

    • How do you get the delivery fees waved? Tx

Sorry, I don't recall ever seeing any news bulletin of a petrol car just bursting into flames "while parked" in the last 20 years. Happy for you to correct me with a link ?

        • Search on googla "x car company recall", most recent is Kia/Hyundai cars catching on fire randomly and not to park them in garages.. all but one second on google and was on the news plenty recently..
          here's a link for the lazy, https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/motoring-news/hy…

          • -1

@xdivino: What a laugh. If you bother to read what you posted it was a circuit board for the ABS brakes and nothing to do with the safety of Petrol

Whereas ALL of the TOSLA catching fire (including the GRID BATTERY PACKS) are ALL to do with the SOURCE of the Energy i.e. the BATTERIES

There are NO cars catching fire from the Petrol tank or the Engine using the petrol

            • @[Deactivated]: Expert Andy99: " I don't recall ever seeing any news bulletin of a petrol car just bursting into flames "while parked" in the last 20 years. Happy for you to correct me with a link ?"

Did exactly that and you dig in to it and claim "Wah, not the fuel tank so not a comparison.." what about…
              https://www.drive.com.au/news/2021-hyundai-santa-fe-v6-recal…

Since your focused shifted from car to "GRID BATTERY PACKS RAGE CAPS" a more fair comparison is fuel storage vs battery storage in that case and tankers blow all the time ie flammable liquid https://youtu.be/3sdzXgOt_-I they don't catch on fire?

Also, you do realise a fire started by a circuit board within short distance of a fuel tank is pretty much like smoking a cigarette at a fuel pump right? like ALL to do with the SOURCE of the energy.. You realize there's circuit boards and stuff in battery packs too? They're both comparable.

If it helps you sleep at night then sure, NO cars ever caught fire from petrol tanks or engines…. NOT!

I’d love a Tesla. But I’m not sure I can deal with Tesla owners they are by far and the worst I’ve ever seen on the car scene (in fact anywhere).

    • It is because the branding has become iconic like Apple.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF9r9LrOb70

You are participating in this branding exercise. This thread is so long because of that branding.

It's an emotion. Even Andy who comes here to brag about Tesla's brakes not working etc is partly due to successful branding.

  • Not right time for me to buy now, I would have to get rid of my two years old Vclass and wait if there is big EV suv or similar size EV comes out. I don’t drive for pleasure, I am after a reliable efficient price worthy family use EV car.

I don't really trust the NSW government on this one, I'm 80-90% sure it will pass but there is still a risk. I pre-ordered but haven't signed the rego papers yet, will pay the invoice etc. until I know it is certain (even if that means waiting until October). Order fee is $150 which is still money but would be happy to forgo it if there is some further issues with claiming back $5-6k (only reason I pre-ordered was due the sales agent confirming the stamp duty exemption and subsidy in NSW), purchase was really contingent on initial cost being less than $60k:

    https://www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/motoring-news/ns…

"Take a punt" doesn't imbue me with all that much confidence, I was told by the sales rep they wouldn't fulfil my order until the subsidies were assured but I am concerned with this now.
