Being Petty in Ringing for Refund Amount to Bank

I cancelled my home insurance policy recently with Commbank, they sent out a letter advising i was entitled to a 72 cents refund, and if I wanted this refund to call their insuranc e Dept 1300 number to arrange for it to be refunded.

Now i bank with them so uncertain why they just couldnt refund into my bank account without me calling?
…. but apparently have to ring the number to ask for it.
The whole idea i guess is to discourage you by ringing up and feeling like a cheap charlie i guess so they get to keep the money

I did weigh up the decision and as a matter of principle called them, after being transferred numerous times i finally got thru to a person who made this comment "this is only 72 cents !!!

and yes she is right, but im thinking how many of us dont bother to ring up for a entitled refund and let the Bank keep our money?

its ok for them to deduct miniscule bank fees though that add up

  • I got a mailed letter from Sunsuper once apologising for an error in the admin charges and that they were refunding me $0.16 they had overcharged last year. It cost more to send me the letter. I don't even have access to the account or any idea what's going on in it, it's an employer issued thing.

    • Have you tried seeing if any of your super has moved into being held by the government if you couldn't access it before? I think after 7 years if its not claimed they hold it. You might have some money waiting for you?

I think NSW search link is at:
      https://www.revenue.nsw.gov.au/unclaimed-money/search

  • OP, thats good practice given your predicament. 👍

    • "This is only 72 cents!"
"Yes this will get me out of the doghouse."

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. We do not fail overnight. Failure is the inevitable result of an accumulation of poor thinking and poor choices. To put it more simply, failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day.

This is the same for both success and failure, a little bit adds up over a period of time.

        • We do not fail overnight.

Spoken like somebody who dropped dead of pulmonary fibrosis. Guess he just thought poorly and made poor choices.

        • love that proverb,i have copied it

Hope they send you a cheque and the bank will charge you $3 for processing. :)

    And your problem is?

I hold 34c in a once upon a time share trading account with a broker that got sold to CommBank.

So I get a letter to an address I no longer live at, every months advising me of my 34cents.

I tried to close the account but it was too difficult as blahblahblah. Then they sent me a letter saying that if I did nothing they're were going to close it. So i called that number to make sure they close it. And then … They didn't close it.

    Whatever.

You should call them again to make a formal complaint about it just to make a point of costing them more money.

I have seven refund cheques on my fridge and when they ŕeach $5 I might cash them in

    • & a cheque is only valid for 15 months from its issue dates

I'm not sure your age but I consider the time I have left valuable. Up to you how you want to spend it though.

Good on you for calling and getting your money back. Your time is more precious, but telling the big guns they can’t have even a cent of your money has a… satisfying ring to it, don’t you think?

    Royal Commission… 😉

  • I have a cheque from Which Bank for 1 cent. I’ll never cash it, it’s worth $$$ in amusement value! And it just arrived unsolicited.

  • Sounds like a royalty cheque for the Super Terrific Happy Hour.

If it was you owing the bank 72c do you think they would ignore it? Or do you think the debt collector would eventually come knocking. Exactly…

    • nope, they would give it to a debt collector i imagine along with a hefty fee

I actually got a tax refund of $0.01 mailed to me once! No idea how they even calculated that. And another time I was audited on Centrelink payments (DSS actually in those days) and they told me I would probably have to pay back a few$K, but they mailed me a polite letter thanking me for my time, the audit had been completed and they owed me $9.73 which would appear in my bank account within 2 weeks, and it did! No pesky phone calls. But you're dealing with the commercial sector! Funny how they make you call up. I would have called them for the refund as well! Good on ya. Fair is fair.

PS. I remember Telstra sending me continuous letters in the mail to say I was 12c in credit for years after stopping my service! Best to follow up and tie up the loose ends!

    • Vodafone did the same to me. Kept sending me a statement/ invoice each month telling me of my small credit balance after my postpaid service was terminated - until I got fed up and rang them up to say "so are you gonna give me back my money or not?"

  • Usually the insurance and banking side of the same company, operate as 2 separate companies, and the letters for refunds are all automated, and run in batch, so its not as if there is any human interference or decisions made. I would definitely ring the company to arrange for the refund or transfer to ur other accounts, coz that will remain an open issue for u at the company…. Wont bother anyone.

I once rang up westpac over 38c interest they incorrectly charged on a debit account. It would have cost them more to take the phone call and process the refund.

I did it during idle time at work so it cost me nothing. If I had more idle time I would have made a forum post as well.

Yes, pursue it. If you owed them .72c, they would place you on a default list. They would send the Serif loud to take your possessions.

So, you now inform that you want it deposited into your bank account.

    • would they do that? i have heard of cases but i think it takes a few years, with interest added on i guess

  • Its 72c.. move on.
When things like this happen i stop and think of the number of times i have been refunded twice for something …. Still in front. Not worth the worry.

  • My car toll tag stopped working and of course I only knew this when going though a toll gate. I rang RMS to let them know and get a new toll tag. The guy said I can call another number to get the admin fee for the non tag to journey refunded, something like $1.10, 55c each way on a weekend away.

I rang expecting it to be a quick 1 minute call and the guy resisted, dragged it out, and eventually said he'll have to check into it with someone else, and of course, no refund came.
