Looks like you can't boot from it. Maybe someone who owns one can comment?
    Extracted from a review

"Now here are my gripes with this enclosure. Although I was able to successfully use the enclosure to clone a M.2 drive I had in my computer, there is no way to boot from the enclosure. The UEFI Bios recognizes the enclosure, but it doesn't actually recognize the drive itself that is inside the enclosure. It will show up in the bios as ROG #### and if you clone a windows system to it, it will say (Windows boot Manager) ROG ###. Selecting either option will cause a boot loop and jump back into the bios."

    • Why would you boot from a external drive?

      • +2

        Exactly.

Besides, the power consumption of a NVMe and power output of a USB port, means it's likely to run into stability issues.

Granted, for it to work as boot drive you'd want at least USB 3.1. However, from my experience using a RTL9210* on a USB 3.1 port, this still isn't a guarantee that it will work.

*The Asus uses ASM2362, which can bought on aliexpress for $~20.

      • Exactly… you could just take the drive out of the enclosure if you ever needed to boot from it (e.g. main drive failure).

Some people do like to boot from live CDs for various Linux distros, which typically is done from a USB.

    • Cheers mate will add to post! Will suit anyone who prefers local stock with maybe a faster click and collect option? Not sure about shipping times with Msy, but I should get mine by Tuesday :)

      • I guess if you really need it shipped soon then it might be worth it but for most $10 extra isn't worth it

      • +1

I ordered it from Msy last week & it shipped same day, I should be receiving tomorrow (:

        • -4

Amazing! Gotta love Prime shipping sometimes :)

          • +1

@smurfstah: I meant in regards to ordering on Msy website.
But yes I love me some lighting Amazon delivers too haha (:

          • +1

            @smurfstah: i should read better

      • +1

The MSY link is out of stock.

  • +2

Does the RGB make the nvme perform faster?

    • +7

Yes it does. 3 times faster. Make sure to sync the RGB with your mobo.

      • +3

3 times faster only if it's red

  • +4

What's the best use case for these? I want to want one but not sure if I can justify a reason

    • +3

      Book stand

    • +4

"want to want", ozbargainer's way of life right here.

    • +1

You put an m.2 SSD in it

    • +2

I use mine to clone SSDs to upgrade the OS SSD. I can then use the old SSD as a portable drive.

There's no use buying one if you don't have a specific need for it

    • Usb c cameras benefit greatly for ssds. Much easier workflow than cf cards or sd cards, and are way cheaper too

  • What is this for? Is it for when your motherboard can't use the SSD directly?

    • +1

More for fast, expensive and compact portable storage.

      • Thank you

    • +1

This is to make an nvme ssd as an usb pendrive.

  • +1

Excellent Deal OP. Been waiting for the price to drop.
Works in well with the 1tb ssd deal posted today.

    • Yep! If you grabbed that deal along with this its $199 all up for an RGB 1TB NVMe SSD with USB-C 3.2, not bhed!

  • Would this be good for PS4 games on PS5 external?

    • Way too overkill for that. A standard SSD would be sufficient.

      • But this is cheaper than a portable SSD it seems?

        • This is just an enclosure. There's no drive inside.

          • @Hybroid: Yeah but this + 1 TB NVME = $199 vs $279 for a T7 1tb

            • @cc23: hmm, guess ill have to buy this then.
whats the material of the enclosure?

    • i use this as the external drive for the ps5, and it’s great.

  • Damn bought 2 at $94.90 each over a week ago with Amazon. Should've bought with 28deg card that I still have..

    • Ask for a return, and repurchase?

      • Already being used. No point just claim on tax

  • And yes the PC sees it as ROGxxxxx. Both bios and windows.

  • +2

I have this one, can use both nvme and sata m2 drives in the same unit https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08RVC6F9Y

    Works well

    • Yeah but no rgb!

    • -3

I'd rather a reputable company to handle my data safely.

      • +3

what? sabrent is a company that makes high speed ssds, what you think an enclosure is gonna brick your ssd.

  • Is this as simple as old school Sata drives just buy a sad m2 and insert into enclosure to make a cheap external USB powered drive?

Just wondering as this seems cheaper than buying ready to go portable ssds. Am I missing anything or is it you pay higher for convenience of buying an already made up portable ?

    • +1

This takes NVMe M.2 SSD, not SATA M.2 SSD. But yes, basically just put it in the enclosure and it'll work.

  • o wells, deals over. Back to $89

  • Is this a good quality NVMe SSD enclosure? I've bought a few cheap ones off eBay and they've all struggled with various use cases such as overheating when doing a clone and just random disconnects.

    • I purchased this for $120 on release and it's a full-metal case with thermal pads so it keeps the NVME pretty cool. The speed is also amazingly good, top quality all-round.

  • Like, is it basically an rgb enclosure for an ssd that's portable? Can't decide if I cbf to get one..

  • Amusing amazon deal..with the local store not even being named…and even a further misdirection

  • I missed this deal. Can anyone (based on your experience) recommend me a good ssd enclosure from a reputable company like this one? Cheers.

  • FML missed it due to watching a film.

  • Umart have it for $79 + delivery (free with C&C)

    https://www.umart.com.au/Asus-ROG-Strix-Arion-USB-C-to-M-2-N…

Great enclosure with premium build. Lighting can be a little wonky with Armoury Crate.

  • What is the differance between the regular and lite version?

  • Hey people who are better with this stuff than me, what’s the cheapest 2tb that would work with this? I was looking at this but feel I may be wrong… https://www.centrecom.com.au/western-digital-wd-blue-3d-nand…

    • Wouldn't work. That's a SATA SSD and the enclosure needs a NVMe drive

  • +1
    • Ah I missed it again. It shows $79 to me. :(
