What's an Item That You Have Multiples in Case One Breaks?

For me, it's the Xbox 360 console. My favourite console of any generation. I also have over 100 original 360 and original games (backwards compatible) + kinect + guitar hero. I still play it all the time and don't anticipate ever replacing it. Even with newer generations of Xbox I find that the backwards compatibility is not comprehensive and has several limitations. Maybe I'm getting old but the last two generations of gaming have not really pulled me in and I don't really like where the whole industry is moving towards (online gaming, MMOs, casual games, paid DLC, HD "remasters" or "rehashes" of old games as I call them, etc).

I own 2 x 250GB slim consoles and 1 x black elite 120GB console. I bought some of them really cheap on the second hand market as people are getting rid of them. I know that eventually as the consoles pass the 15-20 year mark they will start to break down and become harder to find parts and/or replacement, and the prices will inevitably go up…time will prove me correct.

Hard drives for backups. Many many hard drives.

Consoles are all replaceable so not worried about that. There isn't much else I care for immediate resilience options. Duplicate keys I suppose?

    • This, I have a large box full of hdds…

Think it adds up to around 22tb, largest drives are two 4tbs everything else is 2tb or less.

    • Where do you commute to, for all those hard drives?

    • I've started this too. Originally had one or two backups but one old 3.5" from pre 2010 days one partition won't boot or show in windows now. So I'm painfully using testdisk (free to the old get data back which is paid now) to retrieve the data. Once I move it onto my 2tb drive I'll need from buy another 2tb one to have a second 2tb mirror copy. Just incase.

Have you found an easy way to keep clean backups? I've found over the years in a hurry I've just copied and pasted the whole laptop onto drive. The issue is you could have 2 X instances of 500gb laptop backups with duplicate pictures, videos etc. Short of manually comparing like for like I haven't a good system on how to backup only new or recent docs so it's always manual.

Would be good if there's a software recommendation that could scan said backup drive and list all duplicate files and values for an easy way of finding and deleting duplicates. Edit: I've been wary of just copying and pasting over an old backup folder so new files only get pasted. I've found when a hard drive was on way out I could have similar duplicate photos but one was corrupt e.g opens with black lines through it. Hence I always copy and paste a new backup version onto the external HDD backup. But it's too cumbersome to then review old vs new backup for healthy files and deleting duplicates.

It's even more pain ful with pictures where you just want the one backup but you don't have time to compare what's changed over the yr so you dump the whole pictures folder onto the HDD (again - given a portion of older photos would have been backed up the last copy).

I suppose better having it saved than not…but a waste of space and gets abit monstrous to tidy now? Any suggestions?

      • So are you saying you just copy and paste files to back them up?

First things first, you should check for duplicate files. There are a range of tools that can do this, but part of the process is manual. If you are looking at digital decluttering, it's a good idea to focus your efforts where they are most effective (i.e. deleting 5 duplicated photos will save the equivalent of 100 word documents, maybe more). I use WizTree or WinDirStat to show where the largest folders are, and then what can be removed.

Then you should really be using backup software, rather than just manually copying and pasting. Good backup software will automatically backup only the files that have changed since last backup, and some will compress backups as well.

    Condoms

    • +14

Uhhhhhhhh, more condoms won't help if one of them breaks!

      • +7

I won’t go too far into the biology lesson but this is only true if you don’t notice until the end.

        • I will go a bit further into the biology lesson in that it won't help as much as you think if it's just corrected at the end - there's plenty of swimmers out and about before the main event.

      • +2

Depends…..mine tend to break when attempting to put them on, so having spares is good.

        Wish they made bigger sizes

    • +1

Once they break it would be too late anyway?

      • +2

        That's why you wrap multiples.

          This is the way.

      • +2

i have about 15 10mm sockets but i need 6mm sockets for what i do it sucks

        • +3

It's you! You're the one that's been hoarding them all!!

        • We found the culprit!

        • I really want to neg you, but it's not your fault that you are 10mm magnetic.

          • @Xistn: i cant even share them now they are in the shrine

      • Shhh! Don't shout man. Everytime is listening.

    • Not sure why a joke from the US, where metric isn't common, made it so big in the rest of the right thinking metric world.

      • Because 10mm is about the most common spanner used on anything auto and below?
Why it made it big is the US is the question I think. Surely they are all looking for their 3/8"?

    2 x wii u consoles.

    • +1

Nice. Hold onto them consoles :)

    • I have a Wii U as a backup for when Cemu can't play a particular game well, does that count?

      • Doesn't count. Good thing is you can dump some unique files from your WiiU and play Cemu online!

    • Same here. I have 3 wii u consoles. One still in a sealed box. Going to keep that for a long time. One that's modded for 'homebrew' and the other as a backup. Picked up heaps of games for less than $5 each. Even now on eBay they are getting pricey.

Shoes. Years ago I found a pair of K-Swiss shoes that were a great fit, looked good and very comfortable, I ended up getting buying around 10 pairs of them, even buying some from overseas just to get the same ones. Sadly after an almost 12 year run i've run out of them and have not found a new pair of shoes I liked.

    • +2

Yeah this is pretty much the only thing I have multiples of, buy my favourite pair of Mizuno shoes when cheap.

Jeans maybe, as I usually buy them on the net from the UK (sizing), so want to make the most of the shipping cost.

      • Yeah i've now found two different styles of Levi jeans I like and have bought a couple of extra pairs for the same reason.

      • Which mizunos? I just bought some brooks revel 3 for $99 on sale but I was looking at the mizuno Waveknit riders for $130~.

I would love to know the model

Kswiss Avree in suede brown. I ended up getting a couple of slight variations on the same design but all brown. Works for almost all occasions.

          • @jwh: Yeah i've seen those but I'm not a fan of light coloured bases as they get dirty really quick.

    • +1

I keep buying the same shoes. They fit. Look good and the size is the same. Easy

    • +3

Wait, each pair on average only lasted you 1.2 years? =/

      • +1

        He's a raver clearly

      • My asics gel quantum 360s tend to lose their tread by the 8 month mark and become very slippery on wet surfaces. They are worn daily at work (teacher) and cover a lot of ground.

      • Some people are just rough on shoes. I only get 12-18 months out of even decent quality shoes. Probably a combination of being big/tall, heavy footed and scuffing my feet.

      • +1

Last just over a year for each pair, using them pretty much every day, plus back then we travelled quite a bit so lots of walking. After they wore down too much they'd be turned into 'dirty work' shoes for when we're doing painting, gardening, washing car, etc. They'd usually last another year doing that until they were worn.

      • I've been 90% in socks only for the past 15 months, so no new shoes required for me!

      • +55

This guy wears the same shoes but you've been playing the same video games for 15 years. I don't think you've got the high ground here, mate.

      • +1

Some things are versatile classic staples that are worth keeping around. Having a consistent style, doesn't necessarily mean boring, as one item of clothing can look entirely different depending on what other clothing items are included in an ensemble. As someone who owns far too many shoes and clothes, there are some items I choose to purchase duplicates of because I would really miss that item if something were to happen to it.

      • +1

You can also buy the same thing in different colours/styles.

        • Yep, I did buy a couple of slightly varied styles of the same shoes, but this was also due in part that getting them after they were discontinued was rather tricky. But the key was comfort and these were great.

      • +2

I hate picking outfits just to appear as though I'm not doing anything that breaks the laws of fashion since I have a poor sense of it and don't really care for it. Fashion and style is just not important to me personally, I don't care about impressing other people/strangers and I don't care about what other people choose to wear since it all looks the same to me anyways.

Even so, there is a minimum I need to do since many people in society judge people like me in a bad light for dressing unfashionably or wearing the similar looking clothes everyday or out to special occasions. If it was just people opinions it wouldn't matter to me, but these kinds of things affect how people (mis)treat you in life as well as the workplace, it can impact your career and it can bring about bullying, isolation and toxic gossip. I thought it was something only highschool kids have to deal with but I've come across this all too often in my adult life (although most of the time it's just behind-the-back snide remarks but still unpleasant to hear). There are always people who derive amusement from seeing people who don't follow the same clothing trends as they do because they care so much about other peoples clothing choices.

If my outfits are the same/similar then I don't need to worry that much over coordination if I know something works when one is ruined by time. I'm also happy if something I especially like is on sale, I can purchase duplicates for cheap and save money.

Don't you feel like a million dollars when you are wearing your best clothes?

It's true, people treat you differently based on the way you dress and present yourself.
They have done numerous social experiments to prove this is true.

I wasn't taking a stab at the guy above just making a generalized comment that wearing the same outfit everyday either:

          a) Looks like you own very few clothes
          b) Have no fashion sense or conceptualisation of self image
          c) Are lazy

Each to their own. Clothes are ultimately designed to protect and cover the body. I'm not going to argue with that.

          • @Windows7forever: That's the great thing about Covid. The only thing I own that has variety are my t-shirts & shirts and now with virtual working, that's all anyone sees.

      • +12

Yep it's called a life uniform. Same style shoes and socks and a couple of jeans in rotation, different shirts and that's about it. I have more important things to deal with in life than what people think of me.

    • If the shoe fits… wear it :)

    • +1

I did the same with RBK DJ's in about 2005. I've still got the last pair in use for "yard duties"

Serious answer… I bought a few of these when they went down to $20 Koss KPH30i headphones. It's easy to break the head band, but damn they sound good for the price.

    • The legendary Koss lifetime warranty means you only need to purchase once. I sent my Porta Pros in after 10 years of use, when one of the drivers started to rattle when driven hard. They sent me a brand new pair as replacement, no questions. Cost $10 for return shipping.

    • i bought four pairs of these for $10 a pop from Myers (post Christmas sale 10+ years ago).
Still using the first pair as my computer headphones. All the white has peeled off padding though

Ended up using both of them on trips. ¯_(ツ)_/¯,

    • isn't that the point of a backup? if your camera breaks down during a trip, you have you second one ready.

      • +2

I have a wide-angle lens on one body and a longer lens on the other one.

Ironically, if the "back-up" breaks, I would have to buy a replacement.
