8GB ram cost a couple of dollars. I will never understand why they don't have a minimum of 16gb. The only reason why i will pass

    • You realise they're different size sticks right?

      • What exactly do you mean?

        • Notebook ram is smaller and more expensive, and I'm not sure if the Surface books even use that or a custom sized one.

          • +4

@King Steuart: 16gb ram and 8gb ram are the same physical size. It is just them ripping people off to buy a higher powered unit with more ram

            • @dosada: It's a custom stick soldered to the motherboard. I know the price for extra RAM is exorbitant, but it's not a typical RAM upgrade. https://surfacetip.com/can-surface-laptop-3-ram-upgraded/

              • +3

@King Steuart: I know that. But for them to purchase a 16gb instead of the used 8gb one would cost no more than maybe $40 which is nothing compared to the price jump to a unit with 16gb

            • @dosada: So 512GB and 256GB also the same physical size and not much price difference, but if they put 16gb and 512gb SSD who will buy the higher powered unit?

              • @superforever: That's exactly what i am saying. There is no valid reason behind such a stupid configuration besides greed.

                • @dosada: They are not custom build machine, they really need to make some difference between models and pricing.

                  • -1

                    @superforever:

                    You can choose different colours…

        • It is a marketing decision, just like how they configure iPads etc. They don't want to sell the base model. They want to sell the second-worst at the minimum. There is a massive profit difference for Microsoft/Apple moving from the base model to one step up.

    • +3

Because they want you to spend $300 more for the next tier model.

      • Yeah, they can always put more ram and more SSD space, if that is the case the difference between the low tier and high tier model become not that much difference.

        • the difference between the low tier and high tier model become not that much difference

          They also have difference CPUs.

          • @jv: Yes of course but most people care storage and memory more

    • +3

In 2021, a device costing nearly $1300 work 8GB of memory is a joke.

      • +1

Couldn't agree more. A decent phone has more RAM.

      • Fair point, when phones with 8gb ran just as little as $300AU and many phones have more team than that.
        Albeit a $1300+ iPhone 12 has only 4gb ram.

  • Cracka deal - still got my surface 2 and it works really well

    • +1

How is the battery going on it?

      • +1

Not too bad I'm not sure exactly how long but it'll go plenty of screen on hours before I need to charge it

Why on earth are MS always a green behind in CPUs? I realise this cpu was only released a few months ago, and a bunch of the 5000 series is zen2 as well…but still. For a premium laptop, feels like an nonpremium aspect.

  • Contacted Microsoft a couple of days ago and was told that Surface Laptops won't be arriving until somewhere between late August and early September.

    • and was told that Surface Laptops won't be arriving

      got one last month

      • Yeah, they seem to have sold most of the stock during that June sale, and there's very little left

          That's what I've been - I say, that's what I've been telling you, boy!

  • 8GB…. $1,272.45
    What…..

  • 16gb ram is the norm with 32gb starting to become the normal.
I suggest if anything less then 16gb don't buy unless you can change it manually and is cheap.

  • I wonder if they fixed the wifi issues on this model.
