[NSW] Free Indian Meals for Jobless/Battlers/Elderly/Int Students @ Nilgiri's Indian Restaurant, Cremorne

9800

Similar to this deal, the owners have reached out to me to post this on their behalf - seriously blown away by the generosity of some people. If the owners decide to make themselves known in the comments, please feel free to thank them. Stay safe, and enjoy :)

We run an Indian restaurant in Cremorne and we are lucky so far to have the ability to keep our kitchens operational. Our food is "No Curry in a Hurry" and we are cooking food for anyone & everyone who is doing it tough, including international students. We realise that we are one of the lucky ones so far, to have the ability to keep our kitchens operational. Our community initiative is back to the fore and we would like to reiterate that it is available to anyone & everyone who needs it.

Dob in a friend, a neighbour or anyone who requires a meal. Please complete your details below, email us, call or reach out to us and we can deliver in the local area or you may pick-up, no questions asked!! The circumstances with the pandemic & lockdown now are extraordinary. We have had tremendous support from our regulars and it is only right that we pay it forward in a small way. Ideally, if we know how many portions in advance, that would help a lot. Either way, we will do our best to look after anyone who reaches out!

    Hi TA,
A big Thank You for posting this on our behalf. Our small way of saying "Thank You" to the OzBargain community. Hopefully we can put a few smiles on some faces with our food!!

    • +78

On behalf of everyone on OzB, thank you!

      • +9

        Thank you TA for everything!!

        • +14

          Thanks, really a great gesture.
It's too far from my place and also currently my family is under house isolation, but once the situation gets back to normal, I will try to visit your place.
Always looking for a good Indian restaurant and will just try to help a community friendly business and gladly pay for my lunch/dinner.

    • +10

What an awesome initiative, Ajoy and team! Well done to you. I’ve visited you several times when you were in St.Leonards but haven’t been to your Cremorne restaurant. I’ll definitely come to support once we are out of lockdown. Always enjoyed the food! Once again, great work.

    • +2

      Thank you

    • +4

"Aam" means common, but you are "khaas", or special. Thanks for your generosity in these unforeseen perilous times. I bow my head in respect, and may your business prosper. This can literally mean the difference between sleeping hungry and going to sleep with a smile on your face. Luckily, I have enough for our family (contented with what I earn) and have enough to eat and enjoy life, your generosity will give hope to individuals, and they will surely pay it back to the society in due course. So, thanks.

      • +7

Thank you, you have made my day!! "Aam" also means mango in Hindi, which is my favourite fruit, hence my handle!!

        • +1

Yes, Aam can be mango too. I thought it was a reference to the common man, making a difference to the society.

  • +20

I have seen so many Indian restaurants do this now.. 👏👏

Its a great way to market yourself whilst helping the community around you.
    Brilliant

    • Got any links?
Here is a good chance to spread the word. Good news should always be shared.

  • +6

    Brilliant!!! Simply Brilliant!!!

  • +6

I've been to Nilgiri's a few times, and the food and the staff have always been fantastic. Nice gesture from them.

    • +25

Nice, thank you!! I wonder if OZB has a secret handshake or sign so we may recognize a fellow Ozbargainer!

      • +41

Watch out for empty pockets- a sign of a true Ozbargainer!

      • +2

      • They're the ones with the Groupon voucher.

  • +6

Respect ! to you guys for giving back to the community 👍

  • +20

Nilgiri’s is right near me, and whilst I’ve not eaten there my parents have raved about it when they visited.

I’ll place a (paying) order with them this week to support them for supporting others. A lovely gesture from a small business.

    • +3

This is a great way to keep a business operating, buy a meal and keep paying it forward.

  • +3

What a great way to support people in need. Will definitely check you out if I'm ever in the area

  • +15

I've been to this place many times, and the food is very good. I haven't been for a while because I moved to the other side of town. I will come and visit and pay for a meal once lockdown is over and I can legally travel outside my area (not just as a good gesture, but also because it's damn tasty!)

  • +3

Awesome gesture, may one day visit if borders dont keep slamming shut!

  • +6

Thank you everyone. I have a feeling our website is taking a hit already. May I please request anyone who would like some food to email us at bookings(at)nilgiris(dot)com(dot)au

    • +1

Yep, just tried to access your site and its not working..thats the Ozbargain effect kicking in!

Anyway, next time im in the area, ill be placing an order to take home for dinner!

      • +1

        Hi stigsphilocousin,
Hopefully our website has resolved now. Please feel free to check!

  • +3

Alternately, feel free to call us on 02 9909 0063

  • +10

Unfortunately this restaurant is outside of the 10km zone for me, but I'll definitely make a visit once things return to normal to support them. The reviews and photos on google maps all look great. Thanks for offering this to those in need, hopefully people don't abuse it!

      • +6

        Mate. Seriously?

Good intention, but save it for later when things ease.

        • +1

So many people trying to find loopholes around the rules, its getting ridiculous and worse for people who have been following the real health orders of lockdown all along. I am vaccinated but doing my bit however looking at such comments dishing out such advice to others, it is getting frustrating.

      • +10

It's not essential travel for me and doesn't seem like the responsible thing to do since I'm 20+ km away.

  • +4

Nothing but <3. I'm out of the area, but will totally add this on my list to go to once this is over. On behalf of the community, thank you.

  • +3

I have been to their north Sydney branch (now relocated to Cremorne) couple of times for dinner and the food was amazing every time. An advance booking of table highly recommend to those planning to visit.

I wish they move back to North Sydney :( after lockdown… !

    • +1

      Hi SydBoy,
We are very close to North Sydney, so hopefully you will visit us there. Diagonally opposite the Orpheum, so maybe make a night of it with a movie & dinner once the lockdown is over!

  • +3

I use to eat at Nilgiris at St Lennys when I worked up there. Best curry in Sydney imo, and it's good to see this kind gesture.

  • +5

    Targeted again. Thanks.
Do you accept Dine & Discover vouchers? I'm happy to donate one of mine (without collecting food)

    • +4

Yes, we do!! Please feel free to order something & pay with your Dine & Discover Voucher. We would love for you to taste our delicious food!!

      • Outside the 10 unfortunately. Will visit later in the year.

  • +16

Thank you everyone, for your kind feedback. I do hope our site passes the Özbargain Stress Test!! More importantly, please do let anyone who would like food know they can reach out via email or phone call. And look forward to seeing you all after the lockdown!

  • +7

What an amazing gesture… will definitely visit with my family and friends once lockdown is over. I am happy to pitch in small donation if that’s an option.

    • +3

Thank you dealgeek! I guess the best way to support us would be to try our food & hopefully spread the word!!

      • +1

I live close thankfully and tried you guys for the first time tonight (paid meal). Wow such amazing food! Our family has just found our new local indian restaurant, we'll definitely be coming back. We'll also be spreading the word to our friends. BTW amazing gesture for the community.

        • Thank you for your lovely feedback!! Look forward to seeing you again at Nilgiri's!!

    • +4

If it is true marketing, like other ozbargain deal to get free stuff, I would take it, but this, the least I could do is not get free food, if I live close to North Sydney I would try to order some food to support this initiative.

  • +7

Putting this restaurant as first place to visit as soon as lockdown ends.

    • +2

      Well worthwhile

    • +11

How can you misread something so darn obvious…
      🤦🏻‍♂️

  • +6

Nilgiri's has been around a long time. They are awesome!

    • +15

      True, 23 years last week!!

  • +3

Really feeling sorry for small businesses. Can I donate to these guys to chip in for their expenses?

    • +11

Sure, just place a paid order and spread the word around. Small businesses rely on word of mouth.

  • +5

Looks like I've got a new place to grab some (paid) dinner from! Love the initiative, guys!!

    • +2

      Same! Such a great initiative.

  • kudos to Nilgiris! they have always been supportive of the community with fundraisers etc and their food is awesome too! a true Aussie a staple of the Northern Suburbs community! oi oi oi

  • +2

    Respect 🙏

  • +1

Nilgiris always great food ! Great supporter of community. Great choice for dine-in (when that is possible) or takeaway.

  • +2

    Great initiative, well done!

  • +8

Thanks OP and huge thanks to Nilgiri's for offering free meals to those in need.

I'm from Melbourne and we've been through multiple lockdowns and can understand how hard it is! Hang in there NSW!! I know it is tough - but it will be over soon.

As a community, as Australians, I'd really like to see other businesses offering a similar gesture. We are spoilt with some great cuisine choices here: local cafe's serving some great coffee and avo-on-toast, yummy Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Turkish, Greek, Lebanese, Mexican and Italian to name a few - but it's always Indian restaurants offering free food to those in need.

    Why?

    • +2

Perhaps it has a lot to do with their religious or spiritual beliefs - the idea of Karma comes to mind. It’s quiet telling that white restaurant owners (dominated by christians, jews, atheists and pagans) don’t feel the need to do the same. Then again, they’re probably located in East Sydney, (white) privileged and would rather lose money than hand out food for free because of their inflated egos. This is a great gesture of goodwill regardless, and ought to typify what it truly means to be Australian.

      • +4

its only the indians and sikhs who seem to do this

        • +4

its only the indians and sikhs who seem to do this

          Sikhs are Indians.

          • -7

@virhlpool: Not by choice - a lot would prefer to be Khalistani

"The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state, called Khālistān ('Land of the Khalsa'), in the Punjab region."

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalistan_movement

            • +3

              @sund00bie: Not every Sikh though.

            • @sund00bie: Lol.. do you know what % of population? 'A lot' is a bit misleading in your comment..

              • -1

                @virhlpool: Is 'a lot' quantifiable by percentage's ?

if i had said 'most', 'nearly all' etc that's another story.

            • +1

@sund00bie: What was your passport when you came here - India or Khalistan?

              • @Islund: hahahahah! Australian by birth :)

Which boat did you get off?

      • Really mate ??
You assumed what these guys’s religion is and make assumptions based on it ? Just admire their kind gesture instead of creating hatred and divisions in the community.

        • +3

There's nothing about creating hatred and divisions in the comment.. it's the lens from which you're looking at it. The same comment can be inspirational for many.

      • +2

Religion and belief is not what I'm talking about (and I'll never get in such an argument) - I'm just trying to make a point that others should pitch in to help who are vulnerable and need help.

        • +2

yep. funny how some people turn a positive into a negative

more cultures should do this, even multinationals arent doing it but these people are

          why

its a failure on other peoples' side

    • +15

I dare say, the cuisine has a lot to do with it. You can potentially prepare meals in larger portions & serving it later or reheating will not compromise the integrity of the dish for most part. It is not always possible to do the same with every cuisine, as a lot of food will need to be prepped & finished a la minute & eaten soon after.

      • +5

Wow.. such a novel thought. How difficult is it to accept the fact with positivity without giving an unnecessary negative angle to it?

    • +2

Cos Indians have in their religion specifically Sikhs to give 10% of Thier income to the needy and also it's cultural practice quite common in India. Every gurdwara ( Sikh temple) in this world offers free food to people no matter who

    • but it will be over soon.

Nope with Glady giving people no clear guidelines for who is essential workers and business this will continue months longer than what it needs too .
Basically anybody can decide if they are that or not .
      I still can't believe no stage 4 restrictions .
Totally mishandled by her and her team .

  • +4

Thank you guys, hope you guys get 10 times back 🙏🙏

  • +2

Thank you everyone!! We have had a number of people get in touch already, so do keep it coming…
Fingers crossed our website survives Ozbargain…, I am confident our kitchen will!!
We are open Tuesday to Sunday from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm during this lockdown, so do get in early, if you can. Also, we are doing all our deliveries ourselves, so we can only deliver in the suburbs adjoining our restaurant. Happy to answer more queries as they come…

    • How do you manage deliveries yourself? Are you on Menulog or something like that?

      • +4

It's my team & I doing the deliveries. No we are not on Menulog or any of the so-called partner websites. We are mainly a dine-in restaurant & do a small number of takeaways, mostly for a very loyal regular clientele. So our volume of takeaways is not significant under normal circumstances.

        • +1

Interesting. I've been kicking around the idea of making an app for people to order food through, that a restaurant can actually buy and install on a device at their restaurant, or self host. That way restaurant owners could have their prices the same as what they charge in store and a service provider (like menu log or uber eats) couldn't add 15% to every order. If you have people deliver food the restaurant can decide how much delivery is (instead of uber eats etc).

I'm not sure if it's a good idea or if it's feasible. But I do know that uber eats, Menulog and doordash etc make a killing from just delivering food. I know that sometimes using these services can double the price of the food which is incredible.

Obviously for restaurants that give back to the community like this they would get it for free.

          • @misterpotatomato: Sure, sounds interesting! Would love to provide feedback from a restaurant's angle. One of the main things that happens is the lack of integration between existing devices that we are using & the new app. Please feel free to touch base when you get a chance.

    • +12

it's actually $33 but what's wrong with that? many people would be happy to pay $30+ for a nice steak or pasta dish but because this is Asian cuisine it must be sub $10? it's not a food court mate.

        • who can make it equally as good

That's where you're wrong. Don't knock it till you've tried it

        • +3

You do you mate! Some people just don't deserve nice things.
Why even comment if you can't appreciate the generosity that the restaurant has shown?
Yep, there is sumtingwong with you indeed

          • -4

@Mr Frodo: Wong Wong, ping pong!

        • +1

By "greedy" do you mean giving free food to the struggling less fortunate during hard times?

          Gotcha.

        • source of this superior but cheaper alternative? or are you just generalising

      • +1

This is facts, literally nothing wrong with a restaurant setting the prices that the food can match in quality. It’s an issue when the food is doodoo and by all accounts here they offer great food
