Ar you saying the $ 10 item is going to cost $0 using BIRTHDAY10?

    • Thats correct - so only need to pay for delivery (free with click and collect)

      • +3

Promocode not working on my $10 item at checkout, maybe needs minimum spend? If so post should be adjusted

        • I think it needs to be $20 or more.

        • +1

I just tried again - code is still working. Need to sign up as VIP member for code to work. Minimum spend is $10.

      • +3

Click and Collect needs a minimum order of $30 as well, or so it tells me.

    • No minimum order QTY is $30 for click and collect

Why are Spotlight product reviews always so bad?

    • +3

Genuinely wondered this too. I reckon it's an issue with their system.

      • +1

Usually with reviews that bad, you would just hide them. Especially on your own website!

        • +2

Doing so is illegal and can result in big fines.

That's why most companies outsource to 3rd party review companies who do the filtering.

      • Me too. It's the same at Anaconda and probably Mountain Designs. Get you with the price and lower your expectations from the reviews? Dunno. Its odd though. Terrible product reviews but busy successful stores.

    Promocode is invalid

$12.99 delivery to 2170 (considered metro NSW). Coupon works, thanks OP.

  • +1

Dont know about this one. The one I bought from Aldi didn't last long. Enamel came off just after a few times.

    • Same here. Called up Aldi, they said something must have been from improper use like something dropping in it, wasn't going to refund. Took a hammer to the enamel, still did not chip and the surface was new. So is definitely a manufacturing fault.

      • Lead has a low melting point.

    • +1

Been using these Spotlight ones for months with no issues.

    • Interesting, I have the one from Aldi that came out in 2019. It's going strong, I use it somewhat regularly (at least once a month). The only 'defect' is a bit of enamel has fallen off from the lid interior

    • Did you overheat it, or expose it to fast hot/cold changes?

I've got two of the Aldi ones from 2019 and use them regularly, with red sauce and a bunch of other things. There is spider cracking on one of them, but still completely usable. Better than paying $500 for a LC.

      • I think a lot people throw it out when the cracks at the bottom appear. The aldi one is rubbish and I consider this to be the same

  • +7

Just a heads up, Spotlight does not have any C&C for any QLD stores. Also, C&C is only free for orders over $30.

  • +1

Min $30 for click and collect or $12.99 for standard delivery

  • +3

How's this compare to Le Creuset

    • +35

      Kmart Boots vs RM Williams

      • +2

So (assuming your RM's are less than 15 years old) both crap but you just pay a lot more for one of them?

    • +16

We both know you already know the answer to your question…

    • +8

      $10 v $500

      You be the judge!

    • +2

hmm you get what you pay for. its worth investing in a combekk, staub or le creuset.

    • +1

I use my aldi cast iron dutch oven / casserole for baking sourdough bread.

I don't think there's much different in qualities of cast iron. It's the most basic of irons alloyed with carbon.

The Le Creuset may have a finer or higher quality process in the enameling, but I have no basis for that climb. Just assuming that that would be the basis of the higher markup (other than cost of labour).

For cooking purposes, I can't imagine baking bread, making stews or soups in my cheap cast iron would be any worse than a higher priced cast iron. Cosmetically there is a difference of course.

Happy to be corrected if there are any materials scientists out there!

      • +1

We have 2 Le Creuset casseroles that I bought over 22 years ago and are still in great condition - and we use them several times a week

        • +3

Sure, but cast iron, by it's very nature, lasts a (human lifetime). The cast iron balcony railings in the house I live in are from circa 1880, and while the paint is chipped, they are still functional.

Perhaps the disposable nature of most products we buy these days make us think that anything that lasts is somehow exceptional.

I don't dislike le creuset or le chasseur or what not, btw. But the performance of this cookware is not difficult to achieve cheaply. However, if people are more concerned with the aesthetics that's fine too. If you didn't care for aesthetics you could anaconda and buy camp cast iron and it would probably perform just as well, tho you might feel like you are living like a swagman.

          • @huggsymersh: Not all enamels are created equally.
I own all of these from dirt cheap to expensive and they are not the same, and merely "aesthetics".

            • +3

@henno: I'd agree with that (not all enamels being equal). I say so in my first post! And I too own aldi, kmart and le creuset cookware.

And, for what it's worth, I'm not actually suggesting 'aesthetics' are any less important a criteria for the person buying this or any cookware. If that's important to them, go for it. Only they can make that decision.

But what's the function of the enamel? It creates a barrier between the cast iron and your food, similar to how you would season bare cast iron to give it its non-stick surface, and to protect the cast iron from rust. Does it actually impact on the ability of the cookware to cook the food?

The underlying material of cast iron cookware is cast iron, whether it's cheap or expensive.

If you're happy to live with a few chips here and there in the enameling, then the cheap ones are an accessible way to get cast iron cookware. And judging by the comments on this thread, not every cheapie has quality control problems - although with the nature of store brands, the actual manufacturer changes with the seasons.

I'm not convinced by the le creuset value proposition tho, for my needs at least. If you leave behind the mystique of cast iron, what does their $500 stainless steel stockpot offer over a commercial grade stainless steel one at $150 or so.

              https://www.lecreuset.com.au/en_AU/p/signature-stainless-ste…

              • +2

@huggsymersh: Completely agree to all of that!

I probably took your single comment in isolation and perhaps out of broader context, but it appears we are on the same page. I own Aldi enameled, mid-range enameled, Lodge cast iron, "camp oven" cheapies, and expensive fellas and there is a marked difference depending on the use.

For baking sourdough for instance, virtually anything cheap and nasty will work fine as long as it holds the steam in. For highly acidic, high temperature shock, or highly abrasive cooking, perhaps at Kmart enamel is not going to last the best.

I think there is a sweet spot though. Although for enamel, I am yet to find the perfect one (price-vs-performance) but for pure cast iron, I think am more than happy with my swathe of items.

Doubt I will buy another Le Creuset. Unless it is to appease the other half so she can kitchen flex on others.

                • +2

@henno: "Doubt I will buy another Le Creuset. Unless it is to appease the other half so she can kitchen flex on others."

LOL. Yes It's important to be properly equipped when staring down the frenemies your hosting at your dinner party!

Yeah totally re: sourdoughs. I've used ceramic casseroles and pyrex stuff, but I think because the bloggers like to use the cast iron for their styled instagram pages, newbies might be mistaken for thinking it's key to the method.

I've moved over to carbon steel for my frying needs. Seems just as good. Easy to season. Lighter and also easier to wash up afterwards.

3x Casserole Pot and 1x Sauce pan for $30. Not bad, hopefully half decent quality otherwise they're going to be gifts lol.

  • +6

    Poor persons Le Creuset

    • +2

yeah, but at only $10 it does the job.

    • I'd be happy to pay $10 for this and have $500 leftover :)

  • +7

They chip very easily. I haven't compared them to the likes of Le Creuset but be ready to store and handle them carefully

    • +1

How long have you been using these Spotlight ones to know that? Don't think they have been available long.

Been using 3 of these from Spotlight for months with no issues, no chips.

    • +1

Is it safe to still use it when it's chipped? Or is it like a non stick where it's destined for the bin?

  • +1

My Aldi (Crofton) one has had near nightly use for over a year and is in near new condition with no scratches or chips. I would have 0 benefit if I spent 10x as others have said, I would have wasted money.

It's been worth it's weight in gold. Are you guys scraping it with metal utensils or something to make it chip? You should be using high temperature/food safe silicone utensils with enameled cookware: https://www.lawyerment.com/library/articles/Home_Improvement…

    • +6

It's a QC thing. The $300 ones will have a perfectly bonded, even, and thick enamel on every* pan. The $30 ones…less so. Like you, you can get a decent pan! But you can also get a half decent one that fails after a few years, or a lemon that cracks after a single use.

      • In that case the luck to get a good pan was the best thing that happened to me in 2020!

    • Don't use metal implements in them and you won't get scratching. Kids stuffed up my aldi ones with forks :(

Use wooden spoons and silicon stuff.

    • How are you guys treating your enamel cookware?

Enamel doesn't deal well with temperature shock (ie going hot to col) and enamel cookware also does not like being heated empty. At the least heat it with oil in the pot; if you're going really hot make sure there's a lot of liquid in the pot.

      • +1

I just let it cool down (to the point it can be touched) before filling it with hot soapy water, letting it sit for a few minutes then hand scrubbing with a scour pad or a nylon brush.

It's done that at least 300 times the last year.

        • So you do it properly, probably explains why you haven't had your enamel chip ;-)

  • +5

Thanks, Should be able to cook/eat 10 indo mi packs at a time now.

    • +1

These brightly colored enameled pots have very unsafe level of cadmium and lead which is carcinogenic.

    • nonsense, it's a bargain, so worth it!!

    • +2

They're white on the inside. And I thought this was mostly an issue with bright reds/oranges.

    • Where does this info come from?

      • Danger #3 — Lead & Cadmium Contamination In Enameled Cast Iron
People often talk about how you can use enameled cast iron as a safe alternative to cast iron, when you want to avoid iron transference. That is true, however you have to be very careful because there's a huge problem with lead and cadmium contamination, especially in brightly colored ceramics.

        https://traditionalcookingschool.com/health-and-nutrition/da…

With that price i still bought a set!

        • +2

Hmm interesting. I will add that to my list of things to worry about

          • +2

@King Tightarse: Making a long list of things that will kill you - is definitely harmful to enjoying life.

        • Ok but this information is from someone who runs a Bible based cooking program. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but they may not be the world's greatest adherents to empirical data based decision making…

"Our Bible-based cooking program is for Christian families who know they should eat healthier but don’t know where to start… you can still “eat what you want to eat” like cinnamon rolls and cookies, bread and butter, and meat and potatoes… except it’s all healthy by God’s design… without spending hours in the kitchen!"

Also the blog post ends with an Amazon affiliate link for Lodge cookware, so not the most independent of views.

    • +1

You're not supposed to eat the pot

I'm sure ingesting a cast iron pot will kill you a lot more quickly too.

    • Wouldnt consider these "brightly coloured" - I've got a set. So that's irrelevant.

  • Does anyone know how much high temperature is this safe to use in an oven?

    • +2

just buy now and think later

  • +2

If you click / collect and use discount code it comes to $0 however the catch is you have to spend minimum $30 for click collect.

I just brought it and selected to have it posted for $12. Still cheap.

    • Where did you take it?

  • +3

4 pots delivered $42.99. Awesome thanks OP.

  • +1

I just gave my local a call and they were happy to put one on hold so I can grab it tonight and save the click and collect minimum, thanks OP.

    • yeah but you won't get the birthday 10 savings

      • If I had the space to fit more than 1 of these I would've but my small apartment kitchen can't bear that many pots haha

        • buy as presents for other people

  • Is this non-stick?

    • +1

      no, that cost extra.
