What's the cheapest but best acoustic guitar you'd recommend purchasing for a beginner adult to learn

    • +5

Yamaha FG800m for sure. Not a better value for money guitar out there.

      • Made in Indo, Korea, or PRC?

Lack of info on a number of sites….

        • +3

Made in China. For what it’s worth these have great QC and I think in two years working at Engadine Music I’ve had 1 MAYBE 2 warranty issues out of hundreds of units sold.

          • @danefifa08: I have to say, I find it weird saying that I have a cheap China-made Cort* that's better sounding than a Korean Yamaha APX500, and both of which are better than an Indo Yamaha (can't recall the series)…

*The tuners are a POS though…

            • @[Deactivated]: my first Cort guitar is made in Korea.
They sound awesome for a first guitar and good price too :)

        • It really doesnt matter where its made with Yamaha, they do excellent quality control and thats all that matters on the user end.

(I have a few Yamaha guitars, no regrets)

      • +2

im always impressed by the quality and tone of yamaha guitars on every level. they are great value for money and out perform more expensive alternatives.

I helped a mate buy his first guitar a couple of months ago, I just went along and played a couple of cheaper guitars to give my thoughts on the playability and so he could hear them. He ended up going with one of these: https://engadinemusic.com.au/collections/acoustic-guitar/pro…

I was pretty impressed with it really. The finishing is pretty no-frills as you might expect, but it felt nice and had a pretty full sound. They have a pretty keen price on it at Derringers, but it appears to be on back order atm.

edit: Yamaha make very nice guitars too, but that was out of my mate's price range unfortuantely.

      • The FG800 is the same price? And a superior guitar from the research I did

    • Added to clearance at the best price I could find

Got a trumpet that only produces the brown note, interested?

As someone who grew up in Engadine, I visited this shop a bit and always found them to be great customer service. I bought my first guitar there and went back a few times for advice on strings etc and they were always good people

    • Thanks for that, Rifts! Hope you’re still playing.

  • +6

Definitely should make use of coupon BROWNNOISE for an extra 2 poocent off

  • Cant seem to find the FG800m that everybody recommends, can somebody link please? Looking at guitars for a friend.

  • Thanks OP!

I'm seeking some advice as I've found a 2 beat gap in a song. If I buy the wah pedal and fill said gap with about 10 notes, will this make me sound like Kirk Hammett?

    • +5

I recommend chaining about 4 wahs together, cranking the gain and doing a non-sensicle chromatic style run on the e string. That’s gonna get you close to the Kirk Hammett vibe you’re after.

      • Hahaha thanks!

I’ll have to check pricing on this tomorrow when I’m back in the office. Thanks for letting me know.

  • Hi there, thanks for posting this.
I've not played guitar in a fair few years and thinking of treating myself.
What would you call out as your best classical acoustic (nylon & steel)?

    • I have not got it but I played friend's Yamaha CG series I reckon its decent.
You can feel the weight and the sound is warm just the way I like it for classical : )

For me I got myself a Spanish guitar Admira Malaga I think the brand is

      • Thanks, I’ll take a look

    • I’ll have a look at what’s in stock when I’m back in the office tomorrow and let you know!

      • Thanks mate :) i’ll keep my eye on the post

        Awesome. Thanks for the reply

        • +1

Bunch of ukes up there now at some great prices. Check them out!

            @danefifa08: Awesome. Thanks mate.

What would you recommend for someone that can play guitar OK but hasn't played for a couple of years?

Thanks also for ignoring my bad spelling :p

            • @ohyesss: Go for a concert or tenor size it will be easier for your hands to adjust to

  • Got any fender amp like the valve fender on sale ? Vibro champ?

    • Unfortunately we aren’t able to stock fender valve amps. Closest we get is the fender tone master range.

  • Just out of curiousity, how easy it is to learn Mandolin.
I have been thinking of learning on it, as a background I play guitar casually.

    • Someone else may be able to weigh in. I’ve never tried!

    • +1

Its reasonably easy to become functional, but it's quite a challenge to become proficient. It's just a tiny guitar string E-G in the opposite direction. If you can flip your brain upside down you'll be playing your standard chords in a few minutes (eg. major and minor thirds and fifths are straightforward). If you just want to horse around, and do 'country music sounds' that's not going to really test anyone who can play a guitar chord with a pick.

But where you get stuck is when you begin to need to do any sort of intricate stuff. And, doing 'the chop' (the mandolin bluegrass version of jazz guitar comping) is a really tricky business, especially to get your hands to work in tight shapes as accurately as is required.

The other thing is that mandos in my experience are a pest to maintain. Changing 8 little strings regularly is a pain in the carriage, and my instrument (a budget model) has many dud frets that simply don't work. It's one of those instruments that's worth spending north of one large to get an Eastman or the Gibson…but for that you've kinda got to be serious.

  • Any piano deals?
My kid is really getting into it during covid so want to get something that will last many years.

Looks like a great price on the Zoom B1on. I think I've seen them sell for more than that at cashies!

  • Huh. I always thought guitars were much much more expensive than this. Or maybe these are some crazy killer deals

    • Guitars vary greatly in price. You can get entry level for under $200 every day of the week, amateur should spend $200-500, pro spend >$500, but a good electric will set you back ~$2000 if you're looking for a good Fender or Gibson.

That's what I thought too but was looking for something to do during lockdown and got the FG800 for $330 delivered. Comes with bag and tuner (already got LCD defect, so just use my phone now). Stock strings wore out pretty quick so I replaced with Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor bronze and sounds totally different (not sure if good or bad). Only a beginner and not finding it easy but going to keep at it. I did a lot of research and this guitar is highly recommended and has been compared to guitars costing 2-3 times as much.

      • As a beginner, was it worth dropping $300 on a guitar? Is there a cheaper alternative?

        • Yes well worth it. I would not consider going cheaper. I want something I can learn on and use for the long term, not something poorly made which will make me give up in frustration or have me upgrading prematurely. This store has the FG800 for $299 which is a great price. It is the matte version though, IMO gloss looks better. I thought I got a good deal at $330.

        • consider that you can re sell a yamaha fg800 for $200, a loss of $100. If you buy a $100, its basically worthless on the used market. Youre still $100 down, but the FG800 option gets you a much better instrument, one thats not going to hard to learn on and you wont outgrow quickly.

  • Are the cheap Gilman guitars solid (cedar/spruce) top? Unlikely I'd presume.

    • Let me look into this tomorrow and get back to you.

    • Not solid tops unfortunately. But the features you get at this prive point in my opinion make up for that. Graphtec saddles, nubone nuts, Daddrio strings etc.

      • Thanks for getting back.

I'm quite attracted to the double sound hole of the Michael Kelly guitar. I've played a Breedlove before with one and the loudness and projection was awesome.

  • Hey, any deals on budget electronic drum kits? Looking for a starter kit for my son. And what's shipping to FNQ going to look like for something like that?

  • My daughter is turning 15 in a week or so and would like a bass guitar to learn/play. Do you have any deals on a beginner's bass guitar kit? She's on the petite side (152cm), so not sure if there's different (smaller) sized options.

Do you do delivery to Brisbane?

  • OP any deals on the Yamaha THR5?

  • Can you do the fender micro mustang close to 120?

    • I’ll check tomorrow when back in the office but highly doubtful tbh. They’re a newish product and I think that’s below cost…

    • Closest we could get is about $149. Let me know if you’d like a coupon

  • Sorry for being a NOOB guys. Duplicate post was rightly removed by mods. I have updated this listing with Drums, pianos, ukes, more guitar packs etc etc. Take a look and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see.
