Olympics: when people suddenly take an interest in fringe sports that they would never watch otherwise… and a few mainstream sports where hardly any of the best players even participate (e.g. soccer, tennis, surfing).

    • +2

Yet is somehow one of the few things that genuinely piques the interest of most of the world at the same time

      • I guess it does give weightlifters and ping pongers a platform, and hopefully it does promote sports participation and inspire some kids.

        But it's surely OVERRATED!?

Am glad it's not every year at least. Would probably lose a lot of appeal if it was annual.

    • I take a keen interest in Handball once every 4 years.

  • Off topic

If archery is in the olympics why isn’t darts

    • +6

Because it's a piss fart game you play at the pub mate

  • +1

Another corrupt method to milk the tax payer. That said, it's still a good way to bring infrastructure projects to Brisbane so it's not all bad.

  • +1

    Eh, eh.

I never thought Olympics as something that could be beneficial to a country unless the country in question plays their card really really well.

I genuinely hope this one is one of those, and gets remembered as something that was successful.

    • +1

How good was Sydney. All the grumpy people went overseas or stayed away. The vibe was unreal and was such an awesome few months. The only time that Sydney had such a community and happy vibe.

      • +3

I frankly wasn't part of the Sydney community to really know how they went.

That said, what I was talking more about was on the financial side of things. Olympics cost a lot of money, it requires investments into infrastructure that may never be used again to the same capacity even.

I think when there is that much money on the table, the question of, even if it did turn profit, could we have used the money better and gotten similar results, will always pop up.

    Only City Bidding
Still doesn't get 100% of the votes (72/77)

In before they become "Australia's Games" like Sydney did
(so that the federal government is asked to chip in and help fund it)

    • +10

Aren’t you a barrel of fun.

      • They’re not wrong though

        • -1

          Actually they are completely wrong

          • @isthisreallife22: Really? What other city made it to the final round to compete with Brisbane?
And she’s already said she expects federal funding help too…so which part is wrong in their post?

              • @isthisreallife22: Nine Wide World of Sports: CEO Matt Carroll rejects myth that Brisbane 2032 was a one-horse

                July 24, 2021

"The system now is a candidature, it's not a bidding process. So countries, cities around the world put up their hand.

"For this particular edition of the Games, it was Qatar, Indonesia expressed interest. India was expressing interest, three states in Germany were expressing interest.”

                • @isthisreallife22: Seems to leave out that the process was reduced to just Brisbane 5 months ago and the whole “decision” was a farce.

“As votes go, the International Olympic Committee’s one to ratify Brisbane as the venue for the 2032 Games was filled with as much jeopardy as the nail-biting wait to see whether Vladimir Putin would command 99 or 100 per cent of the public mandate.

Brisbane came first. In a one-city race to stage the Games. There were celebrations and a fireworks display in the city itself after Thomas Bach, the IOC president, announced the outcome of the vote in Tokyo.

But the razzmatazz was all for show, as Brisbane had been picked as a preferred candidate five months ago, after the voting system was changed by John Coates, an IOC vice-president. Coates, by the way, is the chief of the Australian Olympic Committee. And he was a prime mover behind the push to bring Brisbane’s bid to the table.”

“There were other candidates that had expressed an interest in staging the 2032 Games, namely Hungary – perennial also-rans in this murky business of impressing the IOC – Indonesia, China and Doha. But under the new voting process, Brisbane had moved ahead of its rivals in February.”

                  • @Japius:

Brisbane had moved ahead of its rivals in February

I thought you suggested there was no rivals?

                    • @isthisreallife22: In July when announced and when the post was made? Yes there are none and was known since February. Hence the “announcement” being rightly ridiculed. And as the actual commenter also stated, won’t just be us qld taxpayers footing the bill at least for the lead up, the cost post olympics will drain qld further

Edit: oh you seem delighted about the Olympics and quite the cheerleader…I tend to ignore the deranged sycophants no use trying to converse in what will become simply semantics and giant stretching of technicalities. Have a nice evening

                      • @Japius: How little time does someone have to win by for it to be a valid victory?

If a marathon winner is on the final straight while the other runners are still out on the road, is it a valid victory to you?

If a tennis player wins in straight sets, does that count?

If a government election is declared won when only half the vote is counted because the opponents can't reasonably win, did they not really win the vote?

I'm struggling to understand a perspective whereby a candidate won by so much that the others were no longer being in sight being declared a fake victory.

If anything it's the complete opposite????

  • Time to ramp up the jingoism
    Ugh

    • Maybe a jingo ate your baby?

  • Unreal. Really glad.

As good as this is, Australia seems to be hell bent on the buy now pay later attitude to their debt. Now that it's ballooned to so much it makes the billions it costs to run the Olympics a drop in the ocean.

    • +2

Sorry, well it is an Aussie city and an achievement on its own to get the opportunity to host, but I still feel Olympics is fast-becoming a kind of dinosaur event…. plus the arrogance and greed of the IOC and their country franchises are astonishing and beyond belief, https://www.smh.com.au/politics/queensland/premier-doesn-t-w….

The Tokyo Olympics should be cancelled in any sense but IOC just pointing a gun to the head of the Japanese to force them to just do that. I just hope our lawyers are smart enough to have clauses in the contract with IOC to protect us in the similar event.

    • Well yeah but why cares about that, i bet the debt will be much less than the $200b package last year and we are still a long way from what happened to the Greeks 8 years ago.

  • +2

hopefully we got a good share in revenue hosting; olympics is terrible in the modern day we just get saddled with debt.
    ioc laughing to the bank

  • -1

Its getting beyond the joke… give another country a chance. Why always us?

  • +5

Hell yeh more debt, glad we have our children and grandchildren who will pay for it while we enjoy this spectacle.

  • +2

    Great news, Brisvegas.
Now where's the deal to help us celebrate, TA?
    $20.32 cashback at Cashrewards??

  • +5

Oh yes, the Olympics nobody wanted - what a coup!

  • +10

The Olympics are a scam. Only the corrupt IOC profits.

  • +3

    I don't know mate, it's more of a Shelbyville idea…

  • -1

    Bribane is officially (profanity)! GG!

  • +3

Sell our assets to China and buy a 2 week Circus - genius.
Plenty of gravy and opportunities to skim for our political 'mates'.

  • +5

Olympics are so outdated and expensive now. It is not worth it.

We should try and get the FIFA world cup. That is cheaper and more people watch it

  • +1

    Waste of money

  • Sydney was such a great time for the community. It really lifted spirits and was a happy time. So much so that we’re still talking about preserving the blue line.

I hope brisvegas is just as good if not better.

  • +3

Good news my butt. It's a terrible news. It's nothing but a ploy for corrupt IOC and elites to make money at the expense of average people.

  • +1

    yawn

  • +3

The soccer or rugby world cup? Hell yeah. The Olympics? No thanks. The Olympics has lost all credibility. Not to mention the amount of taxpayer money that could be better spent elsewhere. Bad news for Brisbane.

  • +2

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Difficult to get excited about excelling at being corrupt.

  • -1

Great news credit to Ana and all of QLD for this!

  • +4

Nothing to celebrate. IOC conning us into another money pit event that will cause far more cost an inconvenience than it is worth. Countries are now waking up to this and less and less places want this crap.

  • +2

Strange that none of the big world cities wanted it. Don't think its what it used to be, probably peaked at London 2012.

Its gone the way of a lot of other sport with the richest nations who can afford to fund sport at the top of the medal table. Australia was an early adopter of this strategy, as it sees the Olympics as a much bigger deal than most, but others caught on and overtook. China is an obvious one with its economic rise but Britain went from nowhere to second in the medal table (the highest anyone not the US or China can hope for) when they started using lottery money to fund their sports.

  • +3

Is the IOC taking any responsibility for these failures I wonder?
    https://www.businessinsider.com.au/abandoned-olympic-venues-…

  • +1

Brisbane got the olympics no one wanted and probably agreed to whatever the IOC wanted too no matter the cost to us. Brisbane is a nice enough town but it’s a transit hub you don’t actually come to Brisbane, and it’s infrastructure certainly cannot handle a wave of tourism though who knows if the olympics by then will bring much anyway. I’ll certainly be staying well away from Brisbane when they’re on pity I’ll still have the debt from them to pay long after that

  • -1

Given how harsh ozbargsin forum commenters normally are, I'll give the fact that there's 20% or so positive posts on here a huge kudos. Well done Brisbane!!

  • lol

  • Did you guys see happy Annastacia was in her press conference next to John? She only wanted to go back to her hotel room and sulk but John wouldn't let her. She was lucky she had her mask on otherwise lip-readers would have detected a few F-bombs.

    • +1

Nah, it was a planned and scripted performance.

      • someone gets it

    • +1

I think John's attitude is a perfect illustration of how out of touch the IOC is with reality. They still think they make demands and everyone bows down to them to be blessed by them and grant you the right to provide them with brides and lavish gifts. The backwards idea that it is the hosts cities responsibility to adhere to their traditionals rather than the olympics fit in with the culture of the city they visit.

  • +1

I give precisely zero shits about this

  • Better book Nikki Webster in soon so they don’t miss out.

  • Oh. It's going to be a summer Olympic happening at winter here in Australia.
