Most affordable coffee in Brisbane City CBD

Hey OZbargain People

Just thought I would make a post to see if any of you guys know of any cafes around Blin Brisbane City, please :)?

I'm currently like everyone else on a tight budget but LOVE my morning coffee fix lol and can't stand my coffee-making skills at home, I can just put up with it and drink it but love a hot coffee that's takeaway :)

Preferably under $4.50-$4.70 Max

Thanks, heaps in advance

I'm just going to put it out there - 7-eleven

EzyMart and Nightowl also sell cheap caffeinated brown liquids.

      • +1

Thanks, man yeah definitely give it a go :)

    • +3

      I prefer Coles express.

      • +1

Yes, lately their coffee is much better than 7-Eleven. Maccas is the worst…

        • Maccas drivethru is teribble, that crap comes out of a badly tuned machine. The McCafe coffee is a different thing altogether, better than 7-11, Starbucks, but still nowhere near the level of a good cafe.

  • +1

Prob the one in your kitchen?
Better still, if you are allowed to go to work/office - the free ones the company provides?

    • +1

Thanks for your comment man yeah I work in retail and we are open, thanks but yeah we don't have any at work that they supply

      • +1

        aaahhh that sucks!

  • +1

How far are you willing to travel? Most people just go to cafes that are close to work or on the way to work. No point in someone recommending somewhere that is a 20-30 minute walk from where you are.

    • Heyy yes I work just in Queen St mall Like near the Myer Centre:)

      • +1

What's with the "like" in every sentence are we back in the 90s or something?

  • +1

    McDonald ?

    • +4

      7/11 is cheaper.

    • +1

I don't think McCafe is much cheaper than a real coffee place

      • +1

It’s more expensive and not good.

  • +1

Re coffee-making skills, could look into getting a nespresso machine? Super quick and easy, per coffee cost well under $1. Buy a good travel flask for takeaway situations and you're set

    • +2

I always find Nespresso (and similar) are very short on quantity dispensed. It is probably a good volume for the capsule size, but that doesn't help if you like a 'longer' coffee.
You could, of course, do multiple but that would push up the $ / coffee.

      • +1

There's also the vertuo line for those mug coffees, you're more locked in since there aren't any third party capsules (yet), but the 230ml capsule would only be $0.99/ea and massive 414ml capsules are still only $1.10/ea. Fortunate to own both original and vertuo machines, comes in handy to mix things up

But also for something longer like that, another option would be something like a v60 or chemex, a bit more work, but would be cheaper

    • That's a good idea cheers

If you have access to a kettle and a staff room, (or are okay to put your coffee in a thermos), I found aeropress (inverted method) and aldi (apparently award winning) pre-ground coffee to be the perfect balance between convenience, up-front and on-going cost and taste.

Nearly zero prep, super quick to clean up and relatively consistently decent results.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I would go to the coffee shop where I get on with the barista or server, am able to have a little chat while they're making it, and feel free to tell them about yesterday's awesome or crap coffee. IMO that's worth a buck more than just visiting a nameless dealer for a fix, else I'd just make it myself.

    • +1

Not necessarily unpopular, but OP was looking for the most affordable.

    • Thanks for the helpful comment but yeah just looking for affordable but all good

      • +2

Ok, but post says $4.50-4.70 max, which I'm sure could cover what's in my comment.

    • You: so let's have a little chat, i feel free to tell you what i thought was wrong with your coffee yesterday
Person making your coffee: christ what an a55hole

      • Maybe you get that because you might be an ar5ehole otherwise?

I have (had) my friendly baristas and they didn't seem to mind me telling them when they did well and when they didn't.

      • +1

I would think a decent barista would be glad to hear constructive feedback on their coffee

  • +2

Head around to Elizabeth Street side of myer centre and get coffee from doppio. Or walk across the road to bonsai. Both are friendly, non-pretentious and quick.

    Preferably under $4.50-$4.70 Max

I work in the Melb CBD and the coffees are $3.80 to $4.30 max. Sydney doesn't seem to be much different to Melbourne.

    Is Brisbane super-expensive or something?

    • +2

We have a habit of putting charges on anything extra. Multiple times.
According to data I could find in the net, Melbourne is cheapest capital city, along with Adelaide.

    • +3

Yes it's very expensive! My local bakers in Logan now charges $6 for a large soy. The McCafe up the road is cheaper (also decent coffee).

      • That actually sounds very similar to Melbourne and Sydney - I usually always get a single shot small coffee. A large coffee is two shots at around $5 or so and I remember (I never get this myself) the soy milk being an $0.50-$1 extra depending on the cafe.

Having said that, I think $5 would be a mental barrier in my mind for a coffee! haha.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions all

i like Archer (Wharf St), Hideout (corner of Wharf/Adelaide St). They would be too far from you though.
Cartel outside of Officeworks does good coffee.
You would be able to get any coffee near you as I have not paid anything more than that in the city.

    • Second vote for Cartel. They also employ international students to help them with English, use good beans, and have a good social justice presence.

      • -2

OP just asked where he could buy good, inexpensive coffee. He isn’t “saving” the world. GTFO with your social justice twaddle.

  • Okay coolies will try :))

  • What sort of coffee do you drink? Is it a large one or a mocha for that price range you said?

  • $1.50 Espresso's and Piccolo's

Pane E Vino Cafe (124 Albert St, Brisbane City QLD 4000)

Photo of the deal at this guys feet!

    • That would have been such a good deal and thank you however website says they are permanently closed:(

      • Its open (maybe not during lockdown however). Right on the corner of Albert and Charlotte Street.

  • BLEND 43

    • Thank you for your comment yes this one is good, but nevertheless I am taking about coffee from out when I am in the city :)

      Cheers

Get an Aldi Expressi coffee machine and frother

Their Expressi coffee capsules are EXCELLENT!

    and cheap too

I run a coffee club using the Aldi coffee machine and capsules and have lots of happy customers!

    • Thank you that is brilliant 😍

  • Lena's bakery in PO square, med coffee $3.70

    • Awesome yes :)))) thanks

  • +1

Probably coles express - 80 cents and much better than the other $1 coffees but obviously not as good as Barista coffee.

  • +1

    Coffee Anthology on Margaret St

    MÁS Espresso on Eagle St

  • Thanks all
Tried a few of all of the recommendations
    That you have commented 😁

One of the (only) things that I miss about being in the office is Ed on Edward coffee. It is delicious! Medium is under 5, I'm pretty sure (can't remember exactly). I would legit pay $10.
