    Jarrod's Tech review

    https://youtu.be/MqwXd923JbI

    • His review was on the 240hz screen but this one is the 144hz screen, would there be a big difference?

      • +4

considering you wont be able to 240hz in any games due to a lack of mux switch and lower than usual tdp…nah

Screen quality on the 144Hz option is lower. Probably best do some research to find out how good/bad it really is.

If you go to the specifications tab on the page provided it has all that info there :)

    Not bad, but not great…

I feel like saying "3070 laptop GPU" is quite misleading, or they're trying to mislead people. Of course it's a laptop gpu, it's in a laptop! Wait you mean this 3070 performs worse than a 3060? What!?

For the average user, the old "M" branding for mobile was just clearer. Or mandate suffixing with power draw or something.

      • I blame the GTX 10xx (laptop) series for being such great performers relative to their desktop counterparts. They set such high expectations that people believe the 3070 should be close to the desktop version.

Worst performance laptop on 3070 graphic cards

    • +1

      It's also the cheapest.

  • +2

So quick Googling suggests that 130W 3060 will often beat the 85W 3070. Seem like it's not worth getting excited about it being a 3070, if there's a better overall laptop with a 3060. Am I on the right track there?

    • +1

      You, sir, are 100% correct.

    • While this is correct, 130W 3060 will not be anywhere close to the $2k mark.

      • This is close: (but uses education price)

That has a much better screen

          • @Appox7: Yeah, thanks to a few posts on here I've been keeping an eye on the Legion 5 Pro 16"
I'm trying to find something for around $2200 ($2000 excl GST)
Would love a great deal on the genuine/full power RTX3070 machines, but know that I'm waiting for the improbable (impossible?).

            • @Iceman82: ive try with Lenovo, you will never get it for 2200 even on sale they will never go lower then 2400 for a 3070. you might get 2400 with 32gig and 1TB. but price will stay high now since parts shortage are all over.

      • Cheapest 130w 3060 is $1,800 with sales

    • Correct.

Its all about TGP these days.

I've seen a 3070 laptop Timespy Gfx scores which was about the same as my GS65 with 2070 Max-Q…

  • Does this have a terrible screen and thermals like previous versions?

    • +1

Stats seem to suggest the answer is yes. Colour gamut isn't anything special.
      Don't know about thermals.

    • +1

From the reviews I saw, the thermals aren't as bad and they addressed the vrm cooling issue by extending the heatpipe so that it makes contact. It's still not great, not much else has changed in terms of fan curve, but it's not the joke of a laptop Asus shipped with the 4000 series.

  • +1

    Acer Nitro 5 with 3060 is $1259

  • I wouldn't read too much into the TDP of the GPU. We all love trashing gaming laptops, especially of the "thin and light" variety, for having a throttled GPU. If the 3070 was running at, say 130W instead of 90W (or 85W in case of the TUF Dash), you would have a field day trying to cool it properly and keep the fan noise under control to avoid waking up the household. Except for some rare examples, gaming laptops will always be laptops. If you're looking for a gaming machine to perform at it's peak, a desktop will be a more prudent pick. Unless you absolutely need the portability, you don't need a gaming laptop. And if you need a gaming laptop, evaluate the performance with several pinches of salt.

  • How is this compared to the recent hp omem deal (from hp education store).
Same specs except this has a 3070 and hp has 3060.

  • I bought the 3060 version of this laptop and happy with it overall
However I got it for 1650 (ebay with discount) so it's a fair bit cheaper than this model

I run it with external monitors most of the time so colour gamut isn't a problem

The 3070 at same wattage wouldn't be worth the extra money for me and yes thermals could be an issue any higher performance level
FYI I've seen 2000mhz on the boost with the gpu (95w?)

For any more performance I'd look at a desktop, will cost you a fair bit more though at the moment.

I've made mention how good this laptop is when the 3050/3060 variant deals have been posted over the last few months. I got this laptop at the end of March. There might be better value gaming laptops out there but this ticked the right boxes for me (and further research was doing my head in lol). The 2020 ASUS TUF A15 was my second choice laptop…. I was on the verge of buying it, when I stumbled upon the fact that the 2021 version was readily available for a few extra $$$. The 2020 version seemed alright except for the screen (which I was willing to put up with as the laptop was going to be hooked up to a 55" tv anyway) and heating/cooling concerns.

The 2021 version adjusted the cooling AND has a better screen! Running the laptop off the battery (doing various windows tasks/net browsing etc) I routinely get 12+ hours of battery life…. this pleases me greatly considering I've come from the era of 2-3 hour laptops. Obviously gaming off of the battery makes the battery drop to 1-2 hours of use.

Since buying it I've upgraded the ssd hdd's (512gb isn't much :( ) and the ram. Overall the laptop is my best purchase in a pretty crappy year of lockdowns!
