AmEx Explorer: 60,000 MR Points (Worth $300) + $200 Back ($3k Min. Spend in 3 Months) on Upgrade from AmEx Essential ($395 p.a.)

70

This seems to be targeted as I got the below in my email today. Current AmEx Essential cardholder. Seems to be an upgrade offer. MR points might be lower than what is usually offered, but those are usually limited to new members without an AmEx card in the past 18 months. Might be worth it for those previously considering an upgrade.

Hi *****,

As a valued Card Member, you’re invited to upgrade to the American Express Explorer® Credit Card with an exclusive offer – 60,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points plus $200 back when you apply for an upgrade by 31 August 2021 and spend $3,000 in the first 3 months.

And that’s on top of the already outstanding value packed into the Card.

Here's what you get in the first year: when you apply to upgrade by 31 August 2021, are approved and spend $3,000 in the first 3 months:
• 60,000 Bonus Points
• $200 back on your Card

And here’s what you get every year:
• Annual $400 Travel Credit to spend on flights, hotels, experiences, and more at Amex Travel Online.
• Two American Express Airport Lounge entries to use each year at Sydney or Melbourne International Airports when they reopen.
• Smartphone Screen Insurance covering up to $500 for repairs if you break your screen, with up to 2 claims per year.

That's up to $600 in value in the first year for your $395 Annual Fee

The more you use the Card, the more valuable it gets. The Explorer Card also comes with no cap on Membership Rewards Points, so your everyday spend will earn you even more points.

You’ll get up to 2 points for every $1 spent on fuel, groceries, utilities or travel, and 1 point per $1 spent with Government bodies.

Even worse than recent deals… Use a referral that offers 175k points for applicant and 50k points for referrer. From your partner, family or friend or one of Ozbargainer referral link. Some got the exclusive offer, some didn't. I got it, but my partner didn't.

I get where you're coming from, but this is a great promo for someone with 2 (or more) Amex cards who wouldn't be otherwise eligible for a sign-up bonus without cancelling for 18 months.

      • Ah missed the fact that is an upgrade deal.. time to sleep

      • Travel credit - lol worthless
        60k pts - $300
        cashback - $200
        fee: -395

Net: Spend $3000 to get $105. Terrible.

        • if only we could use the travel credit, it would've been a good deal for an upgrade (shit compared to new sign up)

  • I wish there was an upgrade deal from my Qantas Discovery, been meaning to get an upgrade for a while

  • If I go through the link (while logged into my Amex account) it shows this offer. Does that mean I can avail that? Is anyone in the same boat?

  • i got better offer for the velocity platinum upgrade pop up but now its disappeared. forgot to copy the url. if any one make a copy and has the link can they post it please? otherwise ill have to give them a call the on the last day 31st august before it expires.

Looks like I have lost the link as well, it was a pop up upon my desktop login yesterday but none today :(

  • +1

Yeah I received that too. I think it was 60000 velocity points plus $200 back. I will try and find the URL later today and share. Not sure if it’s better than Explorer offer though.

    • called them up today they said there was mistake made and that the upgrade to velocity platinum offer was sent out to everyone. i asked her to check if that offer was on my account she said no it wasn't. i found the url link in my browser history but im not sure if the source code is unique or the same for everyone? they must of disabled it for me now after talking to them on the phone as it worked yesterday but now when i log in it says "We're sorry. We are unable to upgrade your card at this time." i logged onto wife's account as she has an escape card too and it worked so i applied even though it didnt mention anything about the bonus 60k and $200 credit. if anyone wants to give it a shot just pm and ill give you the url but im not sure if its unique of not but it has seemed to work on wifes account. if anyone happen to do a screen shot of the pop up or do a pdf print out of the offer please PM me it as im thinking about taking my chances again and applying for the upgrade over the phone again on the 31st August and quoting the source code and if they dont pay up us the 60k points at least we will have proof of their mistake.

  • tried this link without the code https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/credit-cards/apply/upg… and it says "Submit Your Upgrade Request" so it appears it will work but not sure if you will get the bonuses on offer?

    • I have got the upgrade link now, please let me know if you want me to PM you…

      • sure pm me please

  • Got 60K bonus points this morning :) No $200 credit yet…
