Is this a good watch? With this lockdown I need a running watch to motivate me so I can get back into shape

        GPS

Unless you want GPS (which most runners will for Strava and other fitness tracking apps) - in my experience connected GPS (where it utilises your phone's GPS) is hopeless. For a budget running watch, the Garmin Forerunner 45 is great.

lol, comparing Xiaomi to Garmin Forerunner… Please…..

"With this lockdown I need a running watch to motivate me so I can get back into shape"
acg21 doesnt mention they want GPS they want a simple fitness tracker

      • Downvoted for suggesting a simple fitness tracker when he/she just wanted to get into basic fitness.

If you're not wearing $200 compression garments, $300 sneakers, $650 fitness tracking smart watch and airpods, can you really say you're into fitness?

    • Depends what you need and are looking for. I was looking quite recently and this Garmin at this price is prob the pick of the bunch for someone who wants a GPS enabled wearable. More expensive than the chinese brands, but a smoother experience with the garmin ecosystem.

Having said that, I'm getting into running and decided against a phone and just use my (cheap) phone with a (good) running belt + strava. That's one way of getting some motivation and structure on the cheap. My view is that the tech can help but it's not going to be the thing that motivates you - feeling good after a run is what does it! But if I stick with the running for a few monts, then maybe I can seal the deal with some tech.

      • I am looking for something that is good with GPS but not expensive, I am not looking for all the bells and whistles…

        • From my research the amazfit bip has GPS for about $100, and good 30 day battery life. But I was put off by the software.

The Garmin 45 at $160ish is the cheapest Garmin watch at the moment. It has heaps of features and for $165 is as cheap as you will get from a reputable brand. Unfortunately with these things you can't buy a basic one without the bells and whistles.

I've had 3 different Garmin bike computers in the past for cycling (Garmin Edge 500). They all have glitches. GPS can take a while to lock on. They all have made errors in recording rides. After my own experience, I just prefer the simplicity of using my phone, at the moment. And the phone locks onto GPS instantly, whereas the bike computers could take up to 5 minutes to lock on sometimes.

But it's possible that the watch will help you go from the couch to a regular jogging. I do love my tech, and find the features quite seductive. But ultimately, it's not really necessary to get started.

            @huggsymersh:

GPS can take a while to lock on

This is because bike computers and smart watches are gps only, where as phones use assisted gps. I think tethered smart watches could be faster to lock on.

        • btw, good luck with the running!

@huggsymersh: thank you. During the lockdown I need to be more active and do anything I can to make sure that I dont become a couch potato…

  • Got one. Thanks for linking.

    • the white or iris? I have read reviews that say that the Iris is blue, I am a bloke and I prefer something more masculine

How would this compare to a used Garmin forerunner 235 or fenix 3?
Mainly for biking but reading comments tempted to just use an old phone 🤔

    • +1

I'm obviously the pro 'use the old phone dude', from my comments. I think these watches are amazing devices - and this Garmin at $165 is a decent price, although it seems to go on special somewhere every month as it's a superseded model.. For cycling, bike computers (or watches) are great for connecting to other sensors to measure heart rate, cadence etc etc. But don't fall in the trap of believing you need one if you simply want to track your activities by GPS as a phone does it quite well, and it's something you tuck in the back jersey pocket anyway.

Sorry, not really answering your question, but if you check out DC Rainmaker, I believe you can compare models there.

I bought a Garmin Fenix 6 in Nov'20 and it motivated me to become more physical and lost 24 kilos.

One of the best things I bought and worth the money I paid. It motivates me with the training status and load focus.

My son has a Fitbit and which requires subscription to use additional functionality. Will buy him a Garmin for Christmas.

congrats mate, losing 24kg is not easy - well done!
