[eBay Plus] 500GB Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD $75.65 Delivered @ Futu Online eBay

1060
TECH10OFF

Original Coupon Deal

15% with the eBay Plus code.

980 is DRAMless but reviews show very comparable against the popular 970 Evo Plus and much more efficient. At this price I think it's a steal.
3500/3000 3100/2600 sequential read/write speeds. Edit: faster speeds are for the 1TB drive, but still very good for PCIe3

This Samsung NVME is also included in the Free Rainbow 6 Siege promo:

Promotional period extended to 31st August.

    • The jury may still be out depending on your real-world use case. But for this price I don't think there is any question which is better value. I was wanting t he 970 though before I came across this.

      • You know chriise, yes good value but atm I am a bit pissed at Samsung atm.

I have a 500GB 970 EVO (non plus) which I bought but lost my receipt. This drive was hitting a 80c temperature when doing any file transfer or any work which I thought was FAR FAR too hot that it was going thermal on a Dell AIO I used.

Got onto chat to enquire about warranty for this drive and they said it was expired. I told them them how could warranty be expired as the drive shows its manufacture date of Oct 2018 which surely proves it is still in warranty. But they said No Sorry, the serial shows its older than 5 years old for which I told them they are mixing up something and should actually apply logic here which they Will Not.

So IMO, Samsung can be utter useless crap when it comes to support and applying simple logic, I have purchased their %$# for years and this is how they treat people, like idiots? Totally disgusting IMO.

People lose receipts from time to time and this is one of those instants.

        /end rant

So I dont know if I should purchase a Samsung having been treated like a Mug by their support.

        • Sorry :(

Although the 980 pulls much less power… so shouldn't get as hot as your 970 EVO. I've no idea what a normal operating temp should be, but imagine somewhere around 50-60, not 80.

You could look at an aftermarket heatsink, for example $14:

          • @chriise: Its ok chriise, its not your fault mate. I really appreciate you throwing up posts here.

Just a bit of a Happy / Sad issue with Samsung an their support BS they gave.

Using a EVO plus 500GB in my Metabox laptop the temps sit around 34c to 40c but this EVO 500gb can quickly heat up to 50-60 on no doing much or doing very little.

What is more sad is Samsung using no receipt / no warranty BS and IMO I think that is illegal and I should expose their desperation by trying to blow off customers by using nasty and illogical tactics in doing so.

            Cheers 👍

            • @zztrader: Take it up with the store you bought it from, not Samsung… I think that is your rightful recourse.

              • @chriise: That is also the problem, I think I bought it with Cash and I also think it was MSY when they were on the gold coast but last year, they are not and the receipt has been lost or is laying in a box which I have looked for and still cannot find.

IMO Samsung should be like Seagate which the serial number and batch or manufacture date all plays a roll in warranty unlike Samsung's secret abuse your customer routines.

    • not really evo being faster than non-pro is expected

    • If you really push the SSDs to the max and manage to use it in a way 980's DRAMless becomes an issue, then yes 970 EVO Plus is faster.

For the general public, the much larger allocation of SLC cache in 980 is something people (and more importantly, benchmark software) can notice, when results are shown in graph format. These TLC SSDs require the use of SLC cache in order to reach PCIe x4 level.

  • I've just RMA'd one of these.

Blazing fast, but not going to live a long life of high I/O

    • How long have you had it? What happened?
Hope you get a better SSD as a replacement. Last time I RMA'ed a Samsung SSD, the RMA department sent me a better model with larger storage size. My experience with Samsung SSDs is mixed.

  • My order has just shipped already with tracking number… impressive.

  • I'm waiting for 2TB NVMe SSD for about $150. Got a bit of a wait to go. :)

    • 2025!

  • Out of stock now it seems!

  • What would you guys recommend for gaming?

  • I would like to boot MacOS Catalina from an external SSD via USB3.0

Is this good or it's an overkill? Please help all the gurus out there

  • It seems that Futu is not eligible seller for the free game.

    • I believe Futu Online is owned by KS computers which is listed on the Samsung website as an eligible retailer. My invoice was issued by Kai Sung Computer Solution.

      • I purchased this half for the copy of Siege, invoice is from futu online which is not eligible, as well as the 980 is not part of the promotion.

  • What a shame Samsung cheaped out on the 980 Pro. Pretty much a downgrade compared to the 970 Pro.
