Wow, to think the 18TB drive was the same price in March.

    • +2

yeah, i picked the wrong time to get into data hoarding

    • +16

yeah march we were getting around $25/TB, at the moment its usually up around $33/TB

i kicked myself for not buying back then, but got some 12TB for $27/TB from Amazon UK a few weeks ago.

      i usually just browse https://diskprices.com/?locale=au&condition=new&capacity=10-…

but you could also setup something on https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/ if you were super keen

        Thanks for the link

      • What do you have them installed in?

        • synology ds916+, trying to cycle out some old 4TBs

          • @doxxie: Same model as mine. I have 2 x 8 + 2 x 12.

And that's starting to fill up as well. Only doing one drive every now and then these days. Simply can't rationalise running on the upgrade treadmill.

          • @doxxie: Would these hdds work well in a synology DS920+ ?

I could run a disk check , then I could just shuck them and then they would work OK?

regrets not buying more last year…

      • That page says the cheapest 18TB is $659 but click the link and it's actually $749.

      • Thanks for the link

    • yea, managed to snare 4 of them (18TB) circa $400 price back then…. my NAS luvs me for it!

Dang that’s a lot of UHD porn

  • +2

Man, they really have gone up. I need two more of these to fill out my array, and I'd like them to be $300 as well, please.

  • +2

    Do they shuck?

    • +2

      Yes

    • +12

I shuck on the first date.

      • +3

I'll treat you to a chicken dinner then.

Ah-ha. Never heard that before, hilarious mate. (I don't even care if you stole it)

Reminds me of that meme with the large fellah wearing the t-shirt.

  • these prices are terrible, im definitely waiting for lower prices.

  • Fair hit from the cheapest

But good price since Chia. Obvs HODL but if you need it now its not a bad price.

    • kicking myself for not getting 2 when this came about. hopefully itll be this low in the coming months

      • lol, I bought 2 and still in the box until I can get a good nas on sale.

only comment is to email WD directly when you get one and they send you the Au Plugs for free

    • My mum better be happy I made her get that exact deal.

It was certainly a good upgrade from her ancient 1TB + 2TB combo.

Damn crypto, driving up demand and prices for commodity hardware, burning resources and the environment in turn all so people that already have too much money can have more fake money.

    • +1

      All money is fake. :)

So tempted, but I don't have a massive need now. Will be building a new NAS in the next few months but I reckon I'll hold off a bit longer to see prices go under $30/Tb.

  • $30 per TB….not bad at all.

    • yeah thats how i justify buying there monsters, really a bargain
