Very cheap. I bought 3 of these at $338 in the last deal and shucked them for a NAS.
They are not NAS hard drive. Isn't it?
From the research I've been doing, are NAS drives really worth it?
If you're seriously running a NAS, you should have a proper systems in place to prevent data loss (backups, RAID, etc).
If you're doing things right, drive failures become almost a non-issue. If drive failures are a non-issue, why fork out $$$ for "better" drives?

These are white labelled helium drives. I.e. they are nas drives (equivalent to WD red).
were these easy to shuck? connections soldered at all?
They are very easy to shuck. No solder. Only need a single Phillips head bit.

What's the usable space after format?

You can just convert from Terabytes to Tebibytes to find the 'usuable' size

Your computer counts it in binary (1024), so sees less than the decimal 14TB.
So 14000000000000 /1024/1024/1024/1024 = 12.73TB" (as I wrote here)Depending on the filesystem (reserved size etc.) it might become a bit less "usable space" if you define reserved space as unusable.
Doesn't matter which drive you buy, you'll always encounter this.

All these years, I have so many 1TB, 2TB and 4TB HDDs, what is everyone doing with their older HDDs? Rather get rid of 4 of them to replace with this.

no it doesn't, thats the point IIRC
its mix and match possible unlike traditional RAIDIt doesn't, only need to make sure the parity drive is the same size or higher than the largest drive in your pool
This is what I'm considering. those old drives will eventually fail and having 1 is easier. but having 12 drive also exposes you to it failing and losing everything in one go. At least with my old 3tb I'd only lose a quarter of the data
That's why unraid is good - set as a 2 drive parity and 2 has to fail before you lose the unraid.
But - if you set the unraid up a certain way (non stripe I think?) and any drives fail and you can't recover, any drives that are still good AND are not the parity drives, you still have the data(I've ordered three of these to replace my 8x4tb old thecus nas)

Have two 2TB drives in a drawer that get used with an external enclosure for backups of important data from a larger drive.
Anything else I've either given away to family (who never thought about using backups) or disposed of.
Use Unraid or a Linux distro with mergerFS (or maybe DrivePool for Windows? Not sure how it works though) and pool the drives together
Drivepool is great, it's essentially for pooling drives. Who would have guessed!?
It runs on top of NTFS, so you can go in to the drives themselves and all the data is there, although obviously you don't do this, you access it through the pool, but it's there if needed.
I've been using it for years now and think it's a really good option for a lot of home users who don't actually need redundancy and want a simple and less technical solution for storage management.
You can configure it with redundancy if you want though and what's great is that you can do it per folder e.g; I have photos and documents in their respective folders duplicated across all 3 of my drives, but I have movies spread across all 3 and TV shows designated to 1 drive only.
Dban them (to ensure your data is save) and donate it to people who is less fortunate to have a decent computer?

Absolutely - work well. I've got 2 of the 12TB variants of these in my Synology
@TightTerry: Did they needthe tape mod? I'm keen on these but the whole tape thing turns me off them :/
@brent3000: Not in the synology it doesnt but i believe in the PC it would need the the tape mod. Dont know why the tape mod would turn you away? Looks pretty straight forward

These (based on the above comments) seem to be 5900rpm drives as well and will be a nice change vs the current 7k ones i have heating up :)
If you don't want to do the tape mod you can just use a molex to sata adapter.

If using with a standard PSU then yes. With Synology NAS (not sure about others) then you don’t have to.

@Italkdigital: From 2016 onwards there was a new SATA standard introduced where the third pin (P3) on the SATA power carries a power disable (PWDIS) signal. When the HDD senses this signal present it shuts the hard drive down. It's intended to be used in a business application so you can disable or power cycle hard drives remotely.
Most if not all consumer PSUs don't have the ability to control the power on P3 individually, it'll just continuously provide 3.3V and so the HDD continuously sees a PWDIS signal and won't spin up. The tape trick is where you cover up at least P3 on the HDD (and if you don't have a piece of electrical or kapton tape thin enough to cover just the one pin, you can cover P1 and P2 as well as the HDD doesn't use 3.3V power and the first 3 pins provide 3.3V power). This method is preferred because using molex to sata adapters isn't recommended due to fire risks or because you have more drives than molex power plugs available.Molex to sata adapters work because the molex standard doesn't have 3.3V, only 5V and 12V so there's no power provided to P3 on the hard drive.
The reason the tape trick isn't necessary on NAS boxes (like QNAP, synology, etc) is because they don't provide 3.3V power on their backplane to the HDD as far as I can tell.

You can email WD support and they give you a replacement power head - the AC adapter has one of those levers you can slide a different plug on.

Oh no, the stress with an amazing offer that I don't need, as I bought on the last deal, but am really tempted to set myself closer to broke.
Such a good price, but given I still have 12+TB free in my NAS (3x12TB used in a 5-bay; only 8TB or so used), I don't think there's much benefit to adding another drive yet… since one you add it to the array, if one drive were to fail, I'd still need to buy and replace the drive. Alternatively I could buy, shuck and sit on it, but then I feel I may as well wait. Thoughts?

As tempting as it is I'm waiting for the seagate 16tb though something tells me it will be a while yet.

The seagate is an enterprise drive though, worth a bit more than the WD drive. They're very noisy though, especially in a RAIDZ config under FreeNAS/TrueNAS especially in heavy seek operation like scrubbing or lots of random reads/writes.

I have OCD and the 12TB is also on special, I'd personally get another 12TB so you've got a pretty 12x4 setup, potentially adding raid 0 to the equation, having all the same drives is optimal for raid 0.
The 5th drive in the future you could possibly get an ssd down the road to hold onto some of the priority files, or a 20TB to back up 1.5 drives 😂

Anyone use this as an external HDD attached to a router for streaming? I don't have a NAS nor have any plans to buy one any time soon but I have a WD Passport external drive attached to my Netgear router which I'm able to access 4K content from my TV, but is currently running out of space. Would this be a good alternative/upgrade option for storage space to use in this kind of use case?
