What do you do with a quarter of a battery charger?

    • You charge 25% of a battery?

Good sale. Better than retail price. Waiting for the mxs5.0 to go down to $80 like previous deals.

  • Anything on the range that can revive 2+ year old dead battery?

    • +1

I think a new battery is required

      • I think so too. Just wondering if there is something in the range to revive old batteries is all.

        • They do have a recondition mode but being dead for so long, I think you'll be out of luck. As mentioned below though, you'll probably need a "dumb" charger to put some life in to it first as the CTEK will check the condition and think it's too far gone.

          • @whitelie: Yeah, I tried both mxs5 (tried every single mode) and the optimate 4. They both gave up.

I read online that the higher end models may be able to, thus the question.

            • @sh4hp: You could potentially hook it up to your car battery and see if it will put some sort of charge in to it or give the mxs5 a few goes at it.
They only start off at 12.5V or something so could potentially increase the voltage over a few goes before it gets high enough that it deems it able to be able to be charged.

              • @whitelie: Will try that. Thanks for the suggestion

    • Car batteries don't like being left flat. That's when the damage sets in if they are left flat for long periods.

If the battery went flat due to old age, might have lost a cell or two and is unrecoverable. If you have a flat battery due to leaving on headlights for example, then as long as you promptly recharge should be okay. Leaving it in a flat state shortens life considerably.

After 2 years? New battery time I'd say. There are often specials on Century or Supercharge 30% off etc, so if you're not in a hurry, wait until a sale comes along.

      • As it happens, I just revived a battery I found hidden in a box not charged for close to two years, had around 7 volts in it.

Used an old school 8 Amp dumb charger and read over 14 volts going into it and gave it a good long kick start.

Today voltage comming up nicely over 12.4 and rising as well as the little clear window went from black ( flat/dead ) to green

( charged/alive ). So don't give up hope, get hold of an older simple dumb charger and see how you go after checking fluids

and topping up if needed. Getting one of those battery acid reviver kits might help too, did that some years ago with success.

You'll need to load test it. You may find the volts come up but the battery just has no "grunt". I'm trying to revive a 18mth old battery that hasn't been charged for 6 months, and it charges fine but has zero capacity.

@LoftyAu: Sure. That will be my next step when able to do so.

  • I used to be the biggest fan of Ctek chargers. I have a 3.6A, 5A, 7A and 25A. I have a camper trailer and a 4WD that are parked up often, so I need chargers to keep the batteries in them on trickle charge.

All but the 25A are now basically unusable because the mode buttons have failed. Common fault on them.

I only buy Victron energy chargers these days.

    • Might want to think of slowely switching over to lithium batteries to reduce the battery drain and weight.

      You won't look back.

      • +1

        Yep I have lithium batteries.

        • +1

Great. That would explain why you you're charging them/know about the Victron Energy Chargers.

I went straight for a lithium battery in my van this year and really happy with the set up which includes a

RedArc Dc-Dc solar charger and a RedArc 240V charger. The benefits of lithium are many.

          Happy motoring :-)

    • Same.
I was a Ctek fan. Same button issue.

Also switched to Victron. Have an alert set up on OzB for victron deals posted.

Switching to lithium for deep cycle camping batteries and also on my bikes.

  • Should I wait for this value pack from last August resurrected https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561103, buy this MXS5.0 or 7.0 (both come with 5-year warranty) deal or Victron which I had never heard of but the mobile app feature sounds good. https://www.outbackmarine.com.au/victron-blue-smart-ip65s-ch… Does Victron have AGM mode?

    • The description says it has AGM mode, and personal experience I can vouch that it does too.

The bluetooth app link is good - you can just look at the app to see if charging is finished. They also use the app to deliver firmware updates as needed. I have a lot of Victron gear now (240V chargers, 12V chargers, solar chargers) and it's all quality stuff. Had one issue but was replaced promptly.

$94 here too by the way: https://www.autoelec.com.au/victron-blue-smart-5a-12v-blueto…

      • That's cheaper but probably an older model based on the dimensions. The newer version (IP65s) is a little smaller https://www.everybattery.com.au/online/product/bpc120533014r… $103

I'm going to get Victron but should I go with 5A or 10A for regular vehicles? Only $50 difference… of course their product sheet recommends 10A for regular vehicles.

        • A10A will get a flat battery back twice as fast (obviously). Probably easiest is a 10A will get a battery back up overnight, vs 5A may take 2/3 of a day.
