Make sure you factor in another $2 for super glue. Sliding mechanisms on thumb drives are as useful as tits on a bull.

  • There's lots of bad reviews of this on Amazon, citing failures and slow speeds. What's the opinion of any Ozbargainers who have one?

    • +1

Yeah 23 up votes is interesting and doesn't reflect the reviews. Obviously ozb trumps Amazon reviews so keen to know too

I rarely mention my experience because I get down-voted when I do, and I suspect others keep quiet for the same reason.
But since you mentioned it and I actually didn't get downvoted last time I'll copy / past my last reply on these.
I won't down-vote the deal because people seem to forget that bad experience with a brand is a vaild reason to down-vote and i get down-voted in return.
Don't blame me, this is what our modern faceless voting culture has bought us….

Have had many failures, and a combination of issues with RMA.

First few failures were uSD cards (Extreme Pro) i had misplaced receipts, my bad.
The last failures i had were both uSD cards and this exact make / model USB flash drive.
The later failures were lower $ value and I just dismissed them and blacklisted Sandisk Products from my home and business.

No RMA process can make up for the shear percentages of failed devices I had from them.

Back when I was using Sandisk Compact Flash products they were kings of the industry, now i don't want to know them.

        This was my experience, YMMV.

The comments above about needing superglue have merit. The USB connector wants to retract as you plug this in, can be a real pain in the ass.
Also performance is dismal, really terribly bad.
Might have a USB3 interface, but the flash seems slow enough that USB2 would have been enough.

I commented before on previous posts. This one is optimized for reading, not for writing - it's extremely slow writing to the drive. The one I had failed even after I formatted it.

I recommend for $59 this one

    • I got one from the last deal ($21).
Very happy with the purchase. Pretty good for the money!

      Here are my results:
      USB 1 = 128GB Sandisk Ultra 3.0
      USB 2 = 16GB Sandisk Extreme USB (3.0) from 6 years ago

Copy a 2.5GB video from the PC to the USB
      USB 1: 30-70MB/s, 54 secs
      USB 2: 50MB/s, 52 secs

Copy a 2.5GB video from the USB back to the PC
      USB 1: 170MB/s, 12 secs
      USB 2: 237MB/s, 9 secs

Couldn't be bothered doing small read/writes. If I was installing Windows with a USB, I'd still use the Extreme anyway.

You can see the difference is a few seconds. For $19 you can't complain. There's a more than reasonable speed trade-off for heaps of capacity.

Bought same model few months back, working fine as of yet

    OOS

  • The write speed on those are very poor (15-20MB/s), got one for my parents but they most transfer some photos/documents so never bothered them.

Depending on whether you really need 128GB, if so, splash out and get the Extreme Pro if you want to stick to SanDisk, I've got the 64GB version, write speed 85-95MB/s. You'll thank yourself when transferring large amount of data.

    • I've just been researching these and from what I can tell, the SanDisk extreme are great for continuous read/write speeds (video, audio, pictures), but for random speeds, the Samsung fit plus is much better; my use case is as the main disk for a raspberry pi, so random accessv speed is important. They are similarly priced ($25 for 64gb on Amazon)

      • That's a valid point, and one that I've not had any experience with as I use mine 99% for transferring movies/ISO/65MB raw files.
Thought you'd opt for a micro sd for a pi to keep it at the tiny size? I think I've got in my camera the sandisk extreme micro sd and they advertise at 160/90 read/write and it's performs pretty close (-10%), but then again that's the continuous access as you've mentioned. Price are almost identical I think.

        • SD cards aren't great for the type of workload of a raspberry pi/general operating system in terms of (random access) speed and longevity. Have had a couple fail over the years, and running off USB is way faster. Size isn't an issue in my case, though something the size of a Fit doesn't stick out much.

    • Luckily for my specific use case as long as the write speed is more than my download speed its fine, however the extreme pro is definitely much better if you need the speed. The Samsung Fit Plus is also half the price of the extreme pro on Amazon (Shipped from US) so I would buy that one if I needed the speed just for the better value imo.

If you're not considering the need to take the data off the card frequently enough then it may not be the issue. Realistically they've gotten so cheap nowadays it's really a couple of coffee's money we're talking about :)
