I love the idea of the Nest but I'm not paying $127 for a glorified cable organiser.

    • +15

The most useless thing I ever owned. Buy something like the Peakdesign cable pouch or the Bellroy. The case doesn't hold much and add bulk to your daily carry.

    • +1

This has gotta be the most morish thing I've seen yet

    • +3

To be fair, it's a lot more than a cable organiser. It's also a wireless charger. Plus the internals can be rearranged to your liking.

      • +2

        That's still $50 at best.

        • -2

          Got an example?

          • +2

            @kerfuffle: $10 cable organiser + $15 wireless charger + markup

            • +3

@Tacooo: You really need to be promoted to an OzBargain admin

            • @Tacooo: Yeah, that's not the same as the Orbitkey Nest, which is marketed as a desk organiser. I don't know about your desk, but I also have my mouse, hand balm, lip balm, pens, etc. on my desk. I'm not going to go and buy a Nest as I don't need one and live off a messy desk, but it's a lot more than a 'cable organiser and wireless charger'.

              • +3

@kerfuffle: You're really stretching the definition of "desk organiser" here. It's a glorified carry case, with a qI charger inside. Guess what happens if I place a normal cable/parts organiser on my desk? It also becomes a desk organiser. There's literally no reason for this price. It isn't made with special materials, it isn't groundbreaking nor does it actually replace anything you already had.

      • +4

The problem is that the images on their website give you the impression that the Nest can be quite versatile. But unless you choose VERY specific items (hence why they only show Apple magic mice), you can run into issues given the limited space. Got a charger that is not compact? too bad. Got a mouse that is not low profile? too bad. Make sure everything you own is travel size because this does NOT organize your desk in a way a drawer would.

There is just too much micromanagement involved when organizing stuff. Yes, I can rearrange the internal to my liking what is the point if I am only changing the positioning of my cables or lip balm? As for wireless charging, just about anything, these days have one. Nothing fancy.

If you want a hard closure to hold stuff, go the the pencil case section in Muji and get 20 cases for $100

      • -1

Agreed. It's a form AND function value proposition. Mine is a daily-carry whether it's working from the home or from the office. I've used all manner of EDC organiser "solutions" in the past (from Tupperware containers to $$$ expanding folios) and this one strikes the right balance for me.

    • +7

These feel a lot like things that look pretty but don't really solve a problem - more for battlestation/EDC porn than actual use.

    • +1

I love this brand but no wonder the world is drowning in waste.

    • +1

Agreed. I like the design and idea, but it's very hard to justify over $100 for it. Much like those insulated bottles that are over $50.

    • Almost the same price as a 3D printer… just need an elestic band or wait for AustPost to drop one.

White desk mate and Nest are cheaper after Cashback on The Iconic: https://www.theiconic.com.au/orbitkey/

    • +1

Thanks mate, just got the orbitkey!

    • Thanks!! Got two for gifts

  • +5

I'm not sold on the nest, but their key organisers are legit. I've been using one of their rubber ones for years and it works brilliantly.

    • +3

      Agreed with this.
Been using an OrbitKey for years and it's great.

The Nest looks like it solves a problem that doesn't exist.

      • +4

Fellow long-term key organiser user here.

I really hoped to get utility out of the Nest - I hate things being loose in my backpack, and I wanted to free up my pockets.

My main issues with the Nest:
        - too damn shallow. Neatly fits AirPods, but any other earphones with slightly larger case and you're out of luck.
        - wireless charger has no built-in battery, so can only charge your phone after you've plugged the Nest in, every single time

        • Dang why wouldn’t they have put in a built in battery, such a deal breaker. Surprised they haven’t released one yet.

        • I see the point of the nest, but honestly I've been better served by a semi-hard-shell pencil case that I bought for like five bucks at Coles. You can get them anywhere and since they're only semi hard and wiry a zipper they can stretch slightly to fit different things. You don't get fancy tech things like a built in wireless charger, but I feel like that's not worth the 2000% premium.

          • +3

@TheRealCJ: Yeah mine now functions merely as a resting point on the desk for my glasses and smaller items. I have a better charger at my desk, so the Nest isn't plugged in.
It's particularly useless now with everyone working from home.
            Sad.

Orbitkey started out with a great idea well executed, the key organiser. I like the strap and ring too.

The clip is almost there but plastic a bit weak.
            Chipolo tracker is absolute rubbish.

Desk mat I didn't buy - too expensive for a jazzed up large desk mat.

I like their design in general, but I fear they've run out of ideas and steam.

            • +1

@andresampras: I like their Ring as well; easy to remove my car key when needed.

They have a new product coming out soon which is basically an ID Card Holder which (as you've mentioned) is useless when everyone's WFH …

              • @kerfuffle: Oh yeah forgot about the card holder. Of no interest to me.

And they were pushing the hand sanitiser bottle quite hard for a while. Also too expensive.

            • @andresampras: In fairness I should mention I have used the original Clip, not the new v2 which looks stronger, on their website.

        • Wow, I didn't even realise it wasn't a power bank.

So you're at your desk, you have to plug in the Nest to then use it as a wireless charger?

          Seems absolutely pointless.

          • +2

@pauly85: Yes, or use a powerbank to power the Nest, which could then carry the powerbank (and basically nothing else would fit lol)

            Nestception.

Of course, it'd be easier and more reliable to just plug phone directly into powerbank.

            Ah, hindsight.

            • @andresampras: Yeah, the whole concept doesn't make sense.
              The price is absolutely absurd.

It's the sort of thing you'd find on Aliexpress for $6 and still not buy it.

  • +2

This is really only one for the chronic OCD crowd.

I do have the rubber OrbitKey and it's great though.

    • +1

Haha. So what happens if you’re torn between chronic OCD and minimalism… cognitive dissonance?

  • +3

I was going to buy the desk mat the other day then came across a review on youtube - the mat is a bit slippery apparently and it moves around. Probably not ideal for FPS gaming haha

    • one of the main reasons why I'm not getting one.

      • This is the post I was looking for, thanks!

  • +1

Wow that desk mat is more expensive than my keyboard and mouse. 😆😆

  • +5

Is this excess? this feels like excess. I can't see a reason to pay as much as they're asking for either of these things.

  • Their key products are quality stuff. Desk mat looks nice but that price for "vegan" leather is yikes.

  • What's the most popular colorway combo orbit key orgsniser ppl like. Thinking one as gift for male

    • I like the black Saffiano ones, but I'm not a male. The black and gold or black and black combos I'd get if my navy one ended up breaking (maybe six, seven years old now; still solid)

      • What navy combo did you get? Yeah they are solid.

        • It was a gift way back when; it's navy and silver. I've also added an extension post, multi-tool, USB key and mirror and nail file

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Just ordered a navy with a set of the gold fitting
