How to Hide a Deal Type

Hi OzB,

How do I hide all afterpay deals? Any deal starting with [Afterpay].
I know i can hide individual shops… but that is not what i am after.

Cheers.

  • OK, let's go through this again.

AfterPay deals come in to 2 categories:

Both of deals are part of AfterPay Day and have a tag "Afterpay Day" in the deal however only the deal requiring the use of the AfterPay service has the [AfterPay] in the title. All of theses will be filtered.

    1) To ensure they are filtered you need to have set afterpay in your title tags and set it to less.

    tags

    2) Ensure that your frontpage is set to List

    list

If you followed those steps you won't see any deals with the title [AfterPay] or whatever keyword.

*Now, as before, you may see AfterPay deals, if the deal title hasn't been edited to [AfterPay]. Usually it's done within minutes/hours on weekdays but can be longer on weekend/public holidays depending on availability of power users and staff.

  • See How To: Personalise your OzBargain front page/new deals page to see more relevant deals (and less irrelevant ones).

Anything tagged [AfterPay] requires the use of AfterPay whereas if it is not tagged in the title AfterPay is not required. See AfterPay page.

Thanks, though unless i am mistaken, it is not possible to hide all deals in relation to Afterpay. I assume the [Afterpay] makes it appear in your https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pages/afterpay-day . Can it then also be used as a filter to hide?

I'm not entirely sure of your reasons

Because it doesn't interest me. All ebay afterpay deals require Afterpay. If it is possible to hide these, it would make my homepage better… either that, or i simply stay of OzB until this sale event is over.

    • Seems to be indeed less… though not all :)

How can I hide candy deals? I'm getting fat..

Someone is cranky they aren't eligible for Afterpay deals…

    • +12

Everyone's eligible, some people simply don't want to sign up to, or support, afterpay.

      • -2

Does Afterpay have some dark history or political affiliations I don't know about?

        • +7

It's problematic from a credit standpoint. It also encourages excess consumerism. Some people aren't interested in paying things in 4 installments for no particular reason.

          • @brendanm: You don't have to if you don't want to. Easy enough to immediately pay it all off.

    • +2

As brendanm said, i am simply not interested in afterpay and having it show up on a credit report. I was raised with "you save up for something, then buy it".

I work in the education field, i see a lot of these payday lender schemes, used to pay for education. I question the ethics and morality of their business model.

Don't get me started about "beforepay".

      • I just checked out Beforepay. That is horrendous. You are in a dire situation if you use that service for non-essential goods or services.

The simple answer no one has managed to give so far is "No, there is no way to hide all Afterpay deals"
Though as another person who also has no interest in using anything like Afterpay, i wish there was an option to ACTUALLY stop them showing, i have had the filter set to show "less" for months now and with the amount of Afterpay deals i still see, i can't imagine how many there are without it supposedly hiding some of them…

    • Which, as i mentioned earlier, is weird. Evidently, the [ ] brackets can be used to filter for the /pages section. Why can't it be used to filter out?

    • Yeah I set "switch" title tags to less and still see them. Seems the only way to not see some deal types is to hide the tag from showing in "new deals" (e.g. graphics card) and then only browse the new deals page (and increasing the minimum vote count so it's then similar to the front page).

No idea why the admins can't just make an option to also hide tags from the front page too, which would solve everything (so all these Afterpay deals for example, OP could just hide the "Afterpay Day" tag from showing on the front page).

I already tagged scotty here about this recently, but he's clearly not interested.

      • It's only technically feasible to filter things in between brackets at this time. We're not purposely being jerks, there is lots of development going on but know that your comment is acknowledged.

    • The simple answer no one has managed to give so far is "No, there is no way to hide all Afterpay deals"

If you follow the instructions to block afterpay in title tags, setting to less, and ensuring your front page deals is set to list (it's the default setting) then you shouldn't see any deals that are titled [AfterPay].

You will still see deals in which you can gain a discount through an AfterPay discount but don't need to sign up for AfterPay or use AfterPay. For these cases, there is no way to block them.

You may also see AfterPay deals before they are edited to include [AfterPay] in the title. Many users can barely string together a legible title so having them correctly tag [AfterPay] relies on power users, moderators to fix them up. The time of posting to fix them up can be only minutes on some days but hours/days on the weekend.

      • Have confirmed several times that i have got it all setup correctly as per instructions, heaps of correctly tagged deals with [Afterpay] at the start of the title still show up, in fact the fourth deal on my home page right now is an [Afterpay] deal.

    • The simple answer is yes, you can block AfterPay deals*

      • Seems to be working. Can't have the homepage on List (old).

        Thanks Neil :)

Yeah, seriously I was looking for that, I don't plan to join afterpay ever, these deals are kinda spam

    • Agreed. A deal is not a deal if it relies on signing up to a third party.

      • +1

I still wonder about Afterpays business model. I know they charge a fee (and percentage) to the retailer, and they charge late fees. Wouldn't surprise me if soon they start selling debts to the highest bidder.

      • If it costs you less money then it's absolutely a deal.

  • I love afterpay. Have used for a year or 2. Never been charged anything. Just helps to spread the load on purchases sometimes over a couple of payweeks, that's all. Also have had some good discounts by using them so have actually ended up in front.
And my credit rating had never been affected, and it is 900+.

    • I'd you have to "spread the load", should your really be buying whatever it is? All it does is make thing seem "cheaper" to people. They see something for $800 and think "that's too expensive", however at "only" $200 (over 2 months or whatever it is), they buy it. They only see the $200, not the $800. It's exactly the same amount of money, but easier to spend when it "looks" cheaper. That's why retailers love it, people with no idea purchasing things they would normally baulk at.

      • I use it to churn my credit card points. Rather than spending different amounts every month, I have something consistent so I can track which card to use :D

  • I understand what you are saying and I have heard this line before and can understand how younger or more vulnerable people get sucked into this type of set-up, but it works for me. For example needed some roof racks, bought for approx. $400, paid $100, and then $100 came out my next 3 pays without me even noticing. Each to their own. As I said earlier my credit rating is in the top bracket so no problems here.

    • -1

Then why not just pay $400? I don't get it.

      • I do somewhat agree about buying goods full price on Afterpay but I guess if you pay the instalments off in time then you don't get charged interest, unlike a credit card. Also when Afterpay deals come up with discounts or 4th instalment covered by them, then you are definitely in front.

        • But why not just pay the damn money normally?

Also when Afterpay deals come up with discounts or 4th instalment covered by them, then you are definitely in front.

Sure, I simply prefer not to deal with them. Pretty sure if you are paying afterpay, you can't negotiate prices either, same as with "interest free" back in the day.

  • Maybe I'm too povo to be able to purchase outright, so you could say I can save up $100 per fortnight and get the item in 8 weeks, like the good old days. Or if I can buy it right now and pay it off without even noticing it over the next few pays then that is my preferred option.
Or do you think that if I can't afford it outright then I shouldn't have nice things? I have a credit card with $0 owing on it which I could use also.

    • Yeah, if you can't afford $400 outright you probably have more important things to be spending money on to be honest. If it's so important to you, as you said, save it up over the time and then buy it. If you "don't miss" $100 out of your pay, and don't have $400 cash, I have no idea what you are doing with your money.

These sort of things make things look "cheaper" to people who can't afford them, or get them to buy a more expensive version of something, when they could have used the basic version, and saved themselves money. They also do it to people who can afford them, but wouldn't buy it at the "outright" price, but buy it because it *seems" cheaper, and they are just bad with money. Why do you think the retailers are happy to pay afterpay their cut?

  • Bren danm!
I reply via the reply button under the comment using my phone so it's a fault with Ozbargain, not me.
Oh and thanks for the free financial advice.

It doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone else.

Oh and thanks for the free financial advice.

I'm not sure that not wasting $400 on some crap if you don't have $400 is exactly groundbreaking stuff.

  • Any advice on how I can fix my "reply" issue?
Looks like you read every single comment posted on Ozbargain in order to determine that

It doesn't seem to be an issue for anyone else

    • You seem to be able to reply just fine in most other threads.

  • You're amazing.

  • I'm still getting afterpay deals (top deals & front page deals) even though I have afterpay set as less, and, front page list ticked. I have cleared cache, logged out/in.

  • Merged from Can We Set Our Accounts to Block Afterpay Deals?

Perhaps this will be an unpopular opinion, but I disagree with services such as afterpay in principle; they prey on the vulnerable and cause people to spend more money they just don’t have.

From my perspective OzBargain is about finding ways to save money. In the long run these companies are costing people more money.

I will never sign up for these services and as such I would prefer not to see AfterPay etc. specific deals on the front page.

In an ideal world I would prefer OzBargain made the decision as a part of the community not to promote these deals at all, however I am also a firm believer in giving people the chance to make their own decisions.

Having said all that, is it possible to have a toggle in my account to hide all post paid specific deals?

    Thanks!

    • …I see now a post on the second page of the forum requesting a similar thing.

I guess I’ll leave this here as a friendly protest against afterpay.

It seems if I set the ‘afterpay’ tag to ‘less’ I should stop seeing them.

      Thanks.

this is like saying we should block credit card deals.

It's appropriate for the right crowds.

  • Why would ozb do that? That's how they affiliate and get some money. This is a free website and you want them to suffer financially?

Maybe learn to not get 'triggered' by a word?

Or make your own ozb? Then have people asking for a lot of random request on a free service/website.

    • You have a creative imagination.
