Same price as this deal from last year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/554619) but RRP has dropped from $3,499 to $2,999. Still seems like a decent deal though - let me know if it's a lemon.

  • is 2k for a laptop with last gen GPU (and CPU?) a good price?

    • +4

Not for $2k, wait until eBay runs their next 20% off Dell and get it $1600 which is a decent price

  • +8

This is $1600 every few weeks.

  • +2

    I got it last year.

Been a solid laptop, no regrets. 2070 perfect for 1080p.
15" just that bit too small and 17" is a perfect size for a comfortable laptop.

Laptops with a RTX3060, which is similar and arguably faster in terms of performance to the RTX2070, go for about $1800 on sale. Many of which have Ryzen CPUs too which destroys Intel's. This is a 17 inch though.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-RTX-2070-Mobile-vs-GeF…

    • 3060 vs 2070 is kind of a tough comparison as it depends on use. The 2070 has the extra VRAM, and is faster in some games. The 3060 is probably a bit better in DLSS and Raytracing.

    • just bought a refurbished Acer Nitro 5 with 3060 from Acer direct for $1149

just saying, can find 3060 for much less.

      fantastic machine

  • Hodl and wait for 20% off.

  • I bought one for a relative. I've been working on it getting rid of bloatware, edge, cortana etc. Did the no choice windows update; edge came back and my privacy / security settings had changed. I've since disabled updates. The laptop does seem good; although I'm not a gamer.

I used to buy from Metabox because they give you good specs and zero bloatware, just Windows and drivers. And no bios security locks so you can install Linux without becoming crazy or voiding the warranty.. The problem is that windows in itself has become a bloat ware

      • Yes, I've pretty much nailed it down - it's amazing what you can get rid of 😊. Just a pity that the updates are under the guise of security - I'm sure some of them are, but for ms not us 😡. Finding lots of open source alternatives for browser, email, office etc. I do like linux - the few times I play with it is a learning issue. I'm enjoying working with powershell and command prompt in windows though. Oh, and the registry 😄

    • Edge is the best browser nowdays. It's the fastest, uses the least resources, best on battery for notebooks and it's made by MS so they aren't spying on you anymore than your OS already is.

      Edge > Brave > Chrome > Firefox.

      • Why is Firefox the worse?

        • +1

Slowest, uses the most resources, worst on battery, recently changed to a terrible childish UI and also recently underwent a big shift in policy (are now pro censorship and by default when opening a new page they curate and push certain 'news' articles that are inline with their new policies and politics).

It used to be awesome. Edge used to be the worst. The tables flipped about 1-2 years ago.

I just want the faster, leanest browser that uses the least amount of electricity while still having adblock extensions. Edge is that browser now.

          • @studentl0an: Interesting. I swapped from Chrome to Firefox a couple years ago because I wanted better privacy. I rather like the UI but I guess it's subjective. Not sure what you mean by pushing news articles, I guess I must have turned it off a while back.

I've been recently using a combination of Edge and Firefox, pretty much Edge for all my work/study and Firefox for general use. I have to admit Edge has come a long way. The other browser I occasionally use is Opera. Mainly for the "VPN" which sometimes works for geo-blocked content (even though it's actually just a proxy).

            • @FireRunner: If you want the best privacy, have a look into Brave browser.

You would have turned off the news articles on Firefox, which is what I did also. I still use it and all the other browsers as it's good internet hygiene to use multiple browsers anyway to prevent/make it harder for tracking cookies to build a comprehensive picture of who I am.

I don't need ozbargain for instance having a cookie to Facebook, or Google. I'll use separate browsers for separate use cases.

Each to their own. Edge is based on chrome - which is google code. Edge is OK if you're happy with insidious msn weather and bing (msn) search, regardless of your search engine choice. Edge still submits stuff to ms - you can change settings, until the next update. I'm enjoying firefox and the control I have; the settings don't change after updates. There is something for each of us it seems.

        • Edge has control over all of that and more. It's very easy to change default search engine. I've never seen msn weather but I've only used Edge for the last year so it's possible that it no longer exists.

Your OS submits everything to MS, you're not safe using Firefox if you care about that. Firefox have also come out heavily in the area of pro-censorship, so that should set off alarms if you care about privacy in the first place.

I've never had Edge reset an option since I started using it about a year ago.

Every browser apart from Firefox is based on Chromium now also. Even the privacy centric Brave is, Safari too. Saying because Firefox doesn't use it means they are somehow more private (when they have publicly come out against privacy) doesn't seem correct.

What control does Firefox have that Edge doesn't now?

          • @studentl0an: You may think that, based on your knowledge re windows and ms - I take great pleasure in nailing it down, and have done for years. All the information is out there if you have the skills / knowledge and know your way around powershell and the command prompt. Yes, you can change the default search engine, but some things still go to bing, as you know. There were things I couldn't change or modify in edge without getting into code - I couldn't be bothered.

And Vivaldi, opera, brave, firefox, then chrome / edge in order of speed, apparently. I use opera myself, and have done for a few years; it's also based on chrome but has been worked on by volunteers in an open source way. Firefox seems similar in speed - I really don't notice any difference.

            • @poohduck: Each to their own. Enjoy using your slow, energy intensive, pro censorship Firefox.

              • @studentl0an: Surely you can do your own research? I'm not going to walk you through what you don't know - if you were interested you'd already know.

                • +1

@poohduck: I have done my own research, which is why I now rarely use Firefox (it was my #1 for a decade) and have noted myself how Edge is now the leanest, fastest and uses the least amount of electricity out of all the browsers.

                  • +1

@studentl0an: What happened with firefox to be considered pro censorship?

                    • @Duck Mode: Have a look into it, there's many articles and forum posts about it.

                      • @studentl0an: Just making sure if you're referring to the deplatforming trump stuff?

                        • @Duck Mode: To advocate for censoring, de-platforming and 'othering' of people while still claiming to advocate for freedom and privacy is a joke. They are not compatible - regardless how you feel about those being targeted.

  • FYI - I purchased this laptop maybe 9 months ago.
Exact same specs as posted above - 10750H CPU and 2070 GPU.

It started overheating regularly after 6 months of light use. I am talking CPU at 90 degrees after starting Windows.

Dell technicians came and replaced the entire cooling system for both the GPU and CPU.

Laptop constantly throttles CPU when gaming due to heat. GPU runs around 95 degrees celsius in Hearthstone even after the cooling replacement.

I am returning it to Dell for a full refund.

IMHO the chassis isnt designed for this high end CPU/GPU combination. It probably works OK with lower grade CPU's and GPU's….

It is good value for the specs you get, but it really doesnt have adequate cooling.

Yes I know you can turn off turbo boost and you can do other things to limit overheating. Seriously though if you want a gaming laptop that will last, look elsewhere.
