Rei best girl. Change my mind.

I still find it rather odd to have your best girl on a car like that, but then again I'm no petrol head.

        • pen pen best penguin. change my mind…..

        • I dunno.. finding old granny Mari Illustrious quite hot now too. But Rei has always been best girl previously.

        • I dunno, I think Shinji is the best girl.

  • +3

I remember tuning to this on SBS when I was a kid and didn't really understand what was going on. Might revisit this again.

    • +2

Yep, me too! Still watched the whole thing and liked it though.

    • +2

Yeah friends were all hyped about it. The days when you had to wait for TV schedule and get excited about….. Kids these days got no idea

I've loved evangelion since watching the original tv series 10 years ago. I think its a great deconstruction of the mecha genre and speaks powerfully about depression and the value of self. 3.0+1.0 was a great ending to a franchise that has captured me for a long time.

That being said, I've never understood why it has mainstream appeal. The plot is all over the place and its very hard to parse what is actually happening in the storyline beyond some broad strokes. Perhaps that is also part of the charm.

Anyways, for those who are interested, I'd recommend watching the original 26 episodes of the TV series, then end of evangelion (the 'real' ending to the TV show), and then watching the rebuild movies in order.

    • +6

3.0+1.0 is a fantastic finale. The final scene is simply amazing because it actually concludes the series. There's nothing left to tell and knowing that, growing up with the TV series in the 90's plus these fantastic films, made me sad.

      • +1

Me too. Ending was a great way to tie it all off.

      • Yes. I'm very happy with 3+1. Though a tad weird pairing at the end. Lol.

    • I was just talking to my mate about this the other day when telling him to watch the four films, how extraordinary I found it that the series is beloved as much as it is given how it is absolutely a mess. It's definitely 'wabisabi the series' in that its 'flaws' and chaos seem to add to its greatness.

I guess it just speaks to people. It really is THAT good that even though the last two episodes are basically a storyboard and a clapping penguin for obvious budgetary issues, and the EoE film is Anno lashing out furiously at the fanbase, it somehow still achieves so much.

I really think Anno dunked it with the REbuild films and the finale of 3.0=1.0 too which is really satisfying (and it does seem to have been received very well).

    Congratulations!

    +1 for subs
I don't understand how any self respecting weeb can watch dubs

    • +5

It's not the 90's. Bad dubs aren't all that common anymore.

      • -6

sorry, there's no good dubs and bad dubs. they are all terrible ;)

        • I though Black lagoon hit the nail on the head…..

        • +1

          serious dub (10 years ago)

          comedy dub
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V03gGJJXzC8

even 15 years ago there were the occasional good dubs, I was impressed with Spice and Wolf, it was really good
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj4-VTUa4-U
(though the original japanese was kinda god-tier so I still stuck with that). Baccano! is sometimes praised as being superior in English.

Anyways, as said before, it's 2021, a generation of anime viewers have become voice actors and good subs are the norm.

          • +1

@MatrixM: Each to their own, i'm a purist and can't watch it in anything other than japanese

            • +2

              @May4th: I mean, A real purist wouldn't use subs.

            • @May4th: If you're a purist you should be learning the language, as subs are't the original way it was made either.

              • +1

@Xianese: I learnt the language and watch it on mute so I can read just the subs now and do my own vocals. I'm a purist purist.

                • @Munki: Congrats on earning your weeb badge!

            • @May4th: Sure, just don't pretend being a purist is somehow better in the current voice acting scene. Or even that the Japanese dub is always closer to the creator's intent. The mangaka for Hellsing hated the Japanese dub for Anderson, it was too over-the-top and insane. The English dub seems closer to what he had in mind. Also subs have been getting more localised, not that it's necessarily a bad thing, especially as it makes it more accessible.
As said above, a true purist wouldn't use subs, either, to make up for that. But again, purity isn't necessarily better.

            • -1

              @May4th: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, purist.

Mate you are hearing noises you don't understand and reading an english translation. That's not being a purist, except in that it conforms to a very rigid set of deliberately exclusionary customs within the WHITE WESTERN anime fanbase that only serves as a falsely elitist self-succour against the ever present subconscious realisation that one is not highly respected amongst one's own culture, and not in any way a part of japanese culture.

          • +1

            @MatrixM: Ghost stories BeSt DuB!

        • +1

Cowboy Bebop dubbed is better than the original.

  • +15

    This is (not) a bargain

    • +7

Not sure if I should vote based on the Evagelion lore or the Ozbargain lore.

      • +3

Better ask Scotty to check the Dead deal scrolls….. :P

  • +2

I remember watching the first 3 and thinking if the final film was ever going to arrive after the constant delays.

It only took 8.5 years, but we finally got it :D

  • I haven't seen these movies but I was disappointed with the major tonal shift in the tv series and the ending. Do the movies have major tonal shifts? If not, I'm sold.

    • +2

I have yet to watch the final one, but yeah there are tonal shifts in the movies that somewhat mirror those in the show (around the same story beats).

    • +2

Just watch The End of Evangelion and call it a day.

      • Sounds good. Thanks mate.

    • If you can survive the shift in the TV series, I think you can manage the movie shift (especially 3.33) - and you'll be well-rewarded at the end.

One thing people might not realise is that the director struggled with depression during the TV series (making anime during a time when the industry was not in-demand). The tonal shift you saw, as well as the mature themes and ending reflect that. He recovered a bit to do End of Evangelion and so the ending is slightly more favourable to what the audience wanted/expected.

The Rebuild series is his idea of a redemption and I think he does it so well considering it's a self-reflection and his own response to fan expectations, and finally not to mention he tries to tie everything up all the way from the beginning of the TV series. This last movie is high stakes because of how long people have been waiting for the ending - the depression also came back after the third film so it really is everything coming full circle for the director and the franchise.

Highly recommend watching for yourself to find out - and then checking out the documentary to get a bit of his story.

      • Err- Doco? Pray tell, where is this doco you speak of?

        • +1

Probably "the final challenge of evangelion" it's on Amazon prime

    • +1

The film series has tonal shifts but more in line with what you would expect of a coherent and structured narrative.

I think the meta chaos of the series is part of its charm but yes I acknowledge it has tonal shifts that are extroardinarily jarring.

I think you will like the Rebuild films.

  • +3

I still have my EVA 01 popcorn box head from Universal Studios.

    • Lucky bastard….. I nearly got one for a little over $100 on ebay…still kicking myself….

    • +1

I've got one too! Along with EVA 02 :D

  • +2

    watches last movie
    still confused

    • +1

I rewatched it again and it closes so much of the plot. The Mari thing needs some Manga background

      • Last bonus chapter in the manga, if you want a minor mari cameo…..

  • This is great ! I have been waiting to see this movie. It is good to have it available on Prime Video while some of us are in lock down.

  • Can't wait for Anata No Ban Desu season 2.

  • So for someone who has only seen the tv series, how should I watch these movies? Are they just rehashes of the series with extra footage?
    Or continue on the series?

    • +1

It's a reboot of the story.

While the general story is retained, a lot of the events within it has changed a lot. All footage is completely new and this time, there's a sizeable budget behind it.

Just watch it in order, preferably with a glass of Fanta in hand and a walkman in the other (both optional).

      • Are the movies as gory as the TV series? I still get nightmares from those freaky scenes

        • +3

Some scenes are more realistic like the classic Rei impact scene. Nothing like the Asuka's eye injury/what the Mass production eva's do to Unit 02.

          • +1

            @HerpinDerp:

Nothing like the Asuka's eye injury/what the Mass production eva's do to Unit 02.

Did you spot the couple of frames with her corpse just before she screamed "I don't want to die!"? That was freaky!

      • +2

@silverrat23 Excuse me! Thats a SDAT player…. Digital audio with superior sound quality!!!

  • +3

    STUPID SHINJI!

    • I'M SORRY!

  • +11

Quick summary of the four films (IMO)

    • 1.0 = Good
    • 2.0 = Great
    • 3.0 = WTF
    • 3.0+1.0 = Awesome
    • 1.0-2.0 was a remake basically with new CGI and animations. 3.0 was building the climax. 3+1 was like yeah.. here's 25 years of wait.

    • I actually hated 2.0 lol. Worst of the bunch imo

  • +1

All the soundtracks for Rebuild are on Spotify too - 3.0+1.0 soundtrack took a while to find but it's linked below:

    Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars …

    • I think my Rei music box plays that….

  • Which website is the best to get the model? I still remember the perfect grade Bandai model 20 years ago…

  • Dont get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Evangelion, even has BD for 1.11 and 2.22.

Apart from review, culture background and origin, what is difference between this and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/646050 ? Why the other one got so many Negs while this one is fine?

    • +2

A series with ~25+ years of exposure and a following compared to a new foreign movie with no background lore and exposure….. ? The evangelion franchise however: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media… Estimated around $11.9 billion(with pachinko machines tho.)

      • I think i didnt explain myself clear… what is the difference between this and that one in terms of Ozbargain posting rules. At the end of the day, they are just new shows available on Amazon Prime from "deal" perspective..

    • I love Evangelion and want to talk about it and I want to see this film promoted and I don't care about the rules and I will break the rules to do so.

      Home means nothing to me.

  • +2

Thanks for making me aware that they'd finally released the last movie!

  • +7

    1.0 + 2.22 Beautiful World
    3.33 Sakura Nagashi
    3.0+1.0 宇多田ヒカル One Last Kiss

    Sayonara Evangelion

  • +1

Did Shinji get in the robot?

  • +1

now I feel bad about reporting the netflix Breaking Bad post

  • +1

This is less of a deal, more like a FYI.

  • +2

Did anyone else notice the increase of odd camera angles for 3.33 + 1. Talk about fan service….

  • did the tv series ever get a blu ray release? seem crazy people are paying $150+ for the old dvd copy.

    • They have a few times, but still as pricey as it ever was.

    • That's about what I paid for Platinum when it was back released

    • Madman's ultimate edition preorder is $520. This is the first AU Bluray release.

  • Ahhhh yes, just as I ordered the soundtrack on vinyl too.

  • +1

I'm a late comer to Evangelion, having watched it when it came to Netflix. I remember it being a thing in the 90s and being on SBS but I just missed it.

I've definitely become a massive nerd about it and have been waiting for this film to come out (not 9 years like some though…).

I loved it! I think Anno nailed this conclusion.

  • +3

Kind of off topic, but if you haven't already, watch Anno's Shin Godzilla.

Come back and thank me when your done.

    • To be fair, its by the same director and involves skyscraper sized monster battles so….. :)

  • +1

No thanks, don’t need to get depression again.

    • Play a nice school game like muv-luv then :)

  • +1

    What happened at the end?
    The ending doesn't make sense.

    • +2

      New to Evangelion?

    • -1

To understand the ending you need to go down the rabbit hole of reading 15 page fan essays on what it actually means. There's a lot of speculation and a sense of disbelief is encouraged but in the end you can just skip the ending of Evangelion. It's a pretty good show for the most part, lots of iconic scenes and a fantastic soundtrack.

      • There isn't a tl;dr version?

        • Yeah the 15 page one is the tl:dr

        • Well to start, what do you think happened, aka 'this happened then this happened, I don't know what this meant etc'?

  • +2

For any Evangelion fans I highly recommend this mashup of Tenacious D - Tribute with it. The composer of the original track found it and even posted about it on his Twitter saying he loved it.
