Be warned, Acer brand will give you nothing but trouble, strange issue happened with this brand…experienced from previous Acer Nitro…they're cheap for a reason.

    • wow you got downvoted hard :o

I had a bad experience with acer 10 years ago. Has their quality improved since then?

      • Nope build quality is passable as it always was… It's always been an affordable brand with some decent stuff every now and then… We have an acer (due to pricing) and keys have fallen off, crappiest bios ive ever seen… Weird issues now and then, but not going to complain since price for performance was good… You get what you pay for in acer's case…

I returned my previous Nitro 5 that I bought 12 months ago for issues with the keyboard that they couldn't rectify (just weak design overall)

but the one I purchased this year has a much better build, and a fantastic keyboard, so I would say that at least this gen of Nitro is fine

I've an Acer Predator Laptop for 5 years bought from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274654. It's been solid with no issues. I was also skeptical when I bought it.
My previous two laptops were Dell XPS and one of them had it's screen dead right after one year warranty period.

      • Same. The predator is awesome quality for the price point.

yep bought my 1060 6gb with gen 8 second hand for $850 on ebay its still going strong even with 2 years on liquid metal. the only thing I've had to replace was 1 fan that cost 25 bucks.

I disagree. I have had no issues with a Predator laptop.

Try explaining which model you had issues with.

I have a recent acer nitro and its been pretty solid. I think the build quality is decent.

They are cheap and Acer has had dodgy quality, but I think the current Nitros are actually decent.

  • The i5 version (with 8gb ram) is also available on ebay for $1279+shipping:

  • Anyone knows what how many Watt is GPU is running at? Finding it hard to find this info.

like I mentioned before, I got Acer Nitro 5 with 3060, 4-core i5 , and 8gb ram for $1149 from Acer direct, refurbished. pretty much same model except for different CPU and less RAM

    looks brand new

if you plan to game on 1080p laptop screen all the time, you don't need more powerful cpu

I play Control and Ghostrunner on mine on best settings and CPU isn't a bottleneck

at the moment it's sold out on Acer website but pops up every day or two

not saying that it's a better deal, but a good alternative for some folks

I think it's crazy to get 3060 for $1149 and CPU is plenty powerful for my needs

    • I think it depends on the game, I was playing Greed Fall on my nitro 5 with the same specs and CPU was bottle necking big time.

      • yes could be

I haven't hit the ceiling yet on what I got

greed fall.. not familiar with the title

        so many games now!

on the other hand see comments below about i7 drawing lots of power

i5 with 4 cores sure draws less power, leaving more for the 3060 to consume

also i5 is easier to cool

so.. it was a conscious decision to go with that version, and lower price wasn't the main factor (although it was a big factor haha)

anyway, here's Acer refurbished gaming section. check it daily! they get scooped up rather quickly

Compromises of this machine seems to be

    1. 11800h's power draw will mean this 3060 is anything but fully powered. Im pretty sure nitro 5 dont get a big power brick neither so expect 95w-105w gpu

    2. Only 1 stick of ram so you lose out on dual channel. On the positive side, since its 16gb stick it should be dual rank already.

    3. Lack of thunderbolt ports, esp considering this is one of the few selling points of intel machines

    4. Screen is 144hz but i would imaging it will have pretty subpar response time as with other nitro 5 machines jarrod have reviewed.

With that said, you still get a rtx 3060 with a cpu that is secondly only to the 5900hx, for a grand total of 1.6k I say its a deal alright.

The people at Acer are magicians…

    • A Magicians tricked you into believing it.

      • Sceptical because ?

  • From this review, the screen is the letdown for the 144Hz Panel

    https://www.ultrabookreview.com/48602-acer-nitro-5-an515-57/

    • Interesting comments about the screen, I have AN515-55 with i5 and 3060 and same screen specs, and it's not an AU Optronics SKU

maybe I got lucky? or reviewers unlucky

Solid deal, thanks OP! Now looking for an excuse to upgrade from my Acer V15 Nitro…

  • Wow OOS already

  • +3

Solid deal. However it's single channel RAM on both models & apparently the stock RAM is meh, dual channels upgrade is recommended if you want to make the most out of it
    https://youtu.be/CSlNPBsLtTA

    • thank you for bringing this up, I will add that this applies to every gaming laptop out there

most of them arrive in single channel configuration

first thing I do is install another RAM plank, as dual channel makes a huge difference

    • If I was going to stick a second 16bg RAM stick in, which model would you recommend?

  • +2

I priced matched at Harvey Norman a bit earlier today (glad I did before OOS at Bing Lee), some of their stores may still price match if you get lucky. Yeah, I know, Harvey Norman..

    • -2

In a few weeks you will take your Acer back to Harvey with your problem.

you are hereby sentenced to a stern look of disapproval

please rise for the stern look

      • Receiving instantly overrides my hatred of Harvey Norman unfortunately.

Did you call or chat with HN rep? HN never reply my messages asking to price match lol

      • +3

I called them, they checked the website and basically priced matched Bing Lee's price + $6 delivery (in their defence Bing Lee is not in Brisbane).

  • you can get Acer shop to price match it if it is out of stock in binglee

  • Their ebay store still has a few
    $20 postage
