Westpac Low Rate Credit Card: $400 Cash Back with $4000 Spend in 120 Days, $0 Annual Fee 1st Year (Save $59), New Customers Only

1270

Low Rate Cashback promotion: the cashback offer is available when you apply and are approved for a new Westpac Low Rate credit card between 31st August 2021 and 30th November 2021, and spend $4,000 or more on eligible purchases within 4 months (120 days) from card approval. […] Existing Westpac customers who currently hold a Low Rate or Lite credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

$400 cashback with no annual fee is not too bad if you've finished with the ANZ rewards offer. $4k is a high amount but is spread over 4 months instead of the usual 3.

LOL, my credit score went up by +100 this month compare to last 3 months. All because I applied 2 more CCs in Aug and closed one account (although the information of the account that closed hasn't updated yet)

I wouldn't worry much about credit score/rating as long as you have a good history - stable job, decent income, good repayment history.

As gimme said, each bank has their own algorithm to access the risks. I've found I got easily with Citibank (almost instant approval within 48hr without any additional request) than ANZ (much longer delay to process and sometimes they call me to double check).

Using westpac card from another deal

The application process was one of the best and fastest application I have done yet. Once you approved, you can start using the digital version of the card so you don't even need to wait for the physical card to arrive in the mail

  • Card got approved, and now they're asking me (after I called them to follow up) to attend a branch to do a 100 points of ID check. Anyone else in the same boat?

    • +1

They'll do ID check in branch for new customers (never had any account or loan with them before).

I have to visited them 3 times. Once to ID check, one to pickup the card (pre-covid) and third to submit the auto payment form. Lucky i have the branch open on Sat where i do my Sat shopping so not really big deal that time

      • +1

Ok, good to know. Funny how they never told me and if I wasn't proactive in chasing it up, the credit card would have been stuck in limbo.

        • Yeh on the same boat here. I got approved, waited 3 weeks for card to arrive (because they told me it will take a while due to auspost logistics issue) but they didn't show up. So I contacted the hotline and turns out i had to do 100point ID check in a branch. Noone communicated this, nothing in the card approval email and SMS.
Really bad communication. I asked the CS to file a complaint seems to be proceeding now.

I now have a westpacID after attending the branch and doint the ID check, but still no way to spend on the card other than use BPAY from the westpac app which wont count towards the spend criteria for the cashback. I've missed almost one month eligible spend period since the card got approved :/.

One question though, does it say anywhere in the westpac app 'rewards and offers' under the new CC about the $400 cashback? mine is empty.. hmm

          • @coresome: You should be able to access the card's number on the Westpac card, and generate a dynamic CCV.

Thanks Op, applied today, $400 cashback is worth it.
Tip for others, the form easily times out and once you click extend session, it actually saves it, and you need to start from the top, learnt the long way…

    • Question regarding the $400 Cashback:

      1. Once you spend the spend $4,000 or more within 4 months, does the cashback appear as credit on your account? Can you withdraw that $400 and transfer it to your other bank account, ie. cash it out?

      2. If you say spend $4000 in 2 months, will the cashback appear within 60 days? OR do you have to wait after 4 months to receive the cashback?

I'm planning on building my gaming computer and I could easily spend $3000 + grocery, bills and insurance to meet the $4000 minimum spend. But if you can't cash out the $400 credit, would I be right in saying that, Westpac is tricking the customers into spending more on the credit card. Eg, Westpac is giving you $400 to spend.

Be good for me to cash out the $400 so I can make back savings on my PC. Perhaps a new Graphics Card

        1. No
        2. Within 60 days of meeting the min. spend.

Just spend the $400 on groceries. More likely than not, it'll just be taken off your owing balance.

        • Bugger it's not like the old comm back cashback credit card where once you met the minimum spend, $250 would then appear in your separate comm bank transaction account for you to withdraw

      • Yes you should be able to cash out by calling them to cancel they'll ask where you want the credit sent to.

I have a Westpac Altitude Platinum Card - am I still elgilble?

  • +1

Can’t apply as getting a page error :( THIS WEB PAGE HAS MOVED OR NO LONGER EXISTS

    • +1

Try again now. Still working for me. I'm just waiting for a few cash backs from other cards and then close them before applying for this one.

  • I got approved today but no sign of the card yet in app (therefore I can't start using the digital version). How long did it take for others to see the credit card appear in the app?

    • +1

I was able to activate the card on the day I was approved. It was a little fiddly but I was able to do it.

  • I just churned my ANZ card, and in the process of getting HSBC one too in a week or so. Is this the best next one available for rewards or do you folks suggest another one?

  • Exciting times getting my first credit card! Was thinking of going for the ANZ frequent flyer platinum deal but would this be better value?

  • Anyone else's card get blocked this morning?

  • Anyone received their bonus yet? How long did it take?

    • +1

I got the bonus today and cancelled it straight.

      • Isn't the $400 credited back to your credit account? I thought you had to spend the $400 with the same card, so if cancelled the credit gets voided? Can you confirm? Thanks

        • $400 credit applies to credit card
Pay off credit card so there's a nil balance and close it

      • how long after you made your $4000 spend? I made mine around middle of September and still no $400 credit yet.

  • +1

Update: $400 credited to my account, literally two days after I passed the 4K threshold. Good on ya Westpac, and Op (for putting it out there)!

  • Still waiting for my cashback. Hit the spend amount required weeks ago :(

EDIT: Called them today and they said I won't receive the cashback until after the 120 days have elapsed.

    • +1

what they said isn't accurate. T&C say to get the cashback you have to make the 4k spend within 120 days of card approval, but actual "$400 cashback will be paid as a statement credit to your Low Rate credit card account within 60 days of meeting the minimum spend criteria."

I made my 4k spend on 21st September, so I expect to get it by 21st November.

      • This is probably the last time I do any business with Westpac. They've been absolute trash.

        • So you don't want to do business because they are following their T&Cs?
On a sidenote, you will get your cashback earlier than 120 days. They do these in batches/cycles so some people get lucky to get it really close to reaching their spend limit, others may have to wait longer BUT all within 120 days as clearly stated on their terms.

          • @gimme: No, I don't want to do business with them for a couple of reasons. Their Android app is atrocious and buggy, and I've had a few issues with their phone support too.

I don't mind waiting for the cashback, that's not the issue here.

      • I got the cashback less than a week after I met the 4k spend.
I even didn't notice the credit was in.

    • I bet you paid government/council agencies, which are excluded from the spend criteria. check your statements. I found I had the same issue and it was due to paying government agencies and local council.

  • +1

    Just realised this term

Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees, charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited to the card account.

Those who have received the cashback, did you spend more than $4k including council rate payment to the local council?

    • I just called as I didn't get my cashback since last 60 days and they confirmed it was because I made government payments to department of transport and local council etc which don't count, so those that haven't got a cashback, check your purchases to make sure they didn't make payments to government agencies.

      • BPay via BeemIt for government payments.

        • Says BPAY is excluded too as per term above. I am manually taking out all the council payments to see how much more I need to spend. Sneaky Westpac!

          • @firestint: Pretty sure this is across all banks not just Westpac

            • -1

@gimme: Hmm okay good to know thanks, so far I have signed up and churned more than 10 credit cards and they have always included BPAY as part of the spend amount required to get bonus points / cash back.

          • @firestint: Read my comments on the first page and you'll learn something useful.

    • I've reached the $4,000 spending and realised that it includes around $500 council fee. I did online chat with them and they confirmed that I've met the requirement.

I'm now confused. Should I spend more, or just wait for the $400?
