  • Vaccination requirements? Since NSW got all the shots, can't get vaccinated in SA until November (and that's just shot 1). So over the stupid media saying everyone should be vaccinated by now..

    • Are you in Adelaide? There's lots of pharmacies with appointments available today or tomorrow.

NSW resident here. At the outset of the pandemic, the principle for vaccines was that they should go first to people who were most at risk (eg border workers) and to those who would have the worst outcomes if infected (aged care residents, people with disabilities, etc). It was logical and thoroughly sensible and rational.

Then somewhere along the line, presumably when there was no covid anywhere, the idea became that vaccines should be allocated equally between states on a per capita basis. Which again seems sensible PROVIDED THERE IS NO COVID ANYWHERE.

Now that NSW, ACT and VIC have community transmission, that is no longer the case. So, according to the very first principle of vaccine priority, they should get more earlier, because the actual current risk of infection there is much higher.

Ideally the allocation should take into account number of per capita cases, the state population, and the rate at which population is willing & able to get vaccinated.

At the moment NSW has the highest number of per capita cases, it also has the largest population, and it still has huge numbers of people who want to be vaccinated and who cannot, therefore it should receive more than its per capita allocation. Same for VIC, but at a very slightly lower rate (as less covid there). But SA, QLD, WA, TAS, NT should get less as they do not have any community cases.

I genuinely don't get how this is confusing to anyone. If it seems unfair, ask yourself: from a purely health perspective, would you rather be in SA with no cases and get vaccinated in November, or be in NSW with thousands of cases a day, 80 something days of lockdown & counting, and get vaccinated now? If you said anything other than SA, then you're nuts. And that's why SA & other covid-free states should get less than their per capita allocation.

Obviously the political attacks on states who haven't vaccinated as much because they got less vaccine, are ridiculous, pointless, and need to stop. I'm so over state & federal politicians attacking each other over covid-related issues.

Equally if SA (or anywhere else) gets an outbreak, then that state's priority jumps, and it should get more sooner.

Ps there are 38 year olds in Sydney I know who just became eligible to BOOK their vaccine about 10 days ago, and who won't get their first jab until mid-October, so it's a similar problem here with being asked to get vaccinated yet not being able to do so, so this is not just an SA problem.
