  • Great looking watch , bought one

  • As far as watch designs go, this is right up there….

  • +3

Seeing these are all drink based Seiko, any Presage VB version?

    • +6

      this is probably the closest.

  • How is the 4R53 movement??

    • +6

We recently discussed this under a Presage deal post, the 4R35 is pretty much average for this price range. I personally get -8 seconds per day, and another person commented how theirs was wildly inaccurate and got around -30 seconds a day.

I looked up the specs and it seems that it’s rated +/- 35 or 45 seconds per day. So it depends on how lucky/unlucky you are I guess. If you’re lucky you may get one that’s within +/- 10 seconds per day, which I would say is pretty good.

      • +1

Seiko is usually way to conservative about accuracy. Most review have stated that its less than 10 seconds easily. More than in range of 4-5 seconds which is pretty good.

        • My Seiko zen garden presage is accurate to about 4-5sec as well.

      • How long does the 'wind' last if you dont wear it everyday?

        • +1

That's the "power reserve" spec which is about 40 hours for the 4r's.

Old SARBs with 6r15's have about 50 and new SARBs (I think they are mostly prospex now) with 6r35's have about 70.

      • Or you just buy a more accurate watch than this…

        • +1

You could just look at your phone

  • Agree that's a great looking watch. The drawback for me these days is I find the date window almost always spoils the overall design and I think superfluous. I totally disagree with people who think they can replace a watch with their phone - but I do think that a phone is the more logical option to remind me of the date (I really only need to see it once a day and it's loaded into brain cache). The problem is so few watches come with a non-date option.

    • Yeah I was umming and ahhing about this one well. It just throws off the symmetry so much of what is essentially a dress watch.

  • +1

    Great looking watch.

I wonder how much bigger watch collections have grown through the COVID period.

    • +2

unfortunately (for my savings).. a bit!
Seiko Matcha dial SRPF41J and Tudor BB58 Blue M79030B added to the collection in the last year or so.

  • +2

I don't think I will be able to afford my dream watch, Grand Seiko Peacock. This will do I guess :)

  • +1

That's a nice looking green facade.
I am still wearing a Citizen Eco-Drive with a nice old-school biege facade also bought from Starbuy years ago.

    • Same haha, got the eco-drive with the black face and green band. Been so good. I'd like an auto watch one day but also I don't care that much. The eco-drive is like a Corolla.

    • +1

Goddammit. I went to check out this Seiko watch, saw the larger photo and damn it is beautiful, couldn't resist and ordered one. I feel ashamed I am so superficial and a sucker for beautiful things :-(

      • I used to be a huge Seiko fan since I was a child. Citizen just seems so much better value these days. This doesn't even come with sapphire glass. Still using this one from years back (creationwatches) citizen ca0210-00e titanium

good review here, looks great on wrist

    • Looks great but different strap in the video?

      • +3

Guy in the video states that he switched it over to a leather NATO strap.

One of his few criticisms of this watch is the supplied strap. "Cardboardy" and "thin clasp" were some of the terms he used to describe it.

      • +1

It's an aftermarket leather NATO strap he's put on the watch (from Barton) - he shows the stock strap off the watch seperately in the review

        • Great looking watch.
I like that nato strap he put on.

Interesting that he mentioned the Tissot visodate, another great contender but a decent amount more looks good on a mesh strap but prefer the green and gold to a white face

Personally appreciate a date window, as long as it's not in an awkward place but 3 o'clock is ideal.

        • I am also having a NATO strap on my Citizen watch bought from Starbuy, think it is made of like canvas type material, nice design. Have another NATO leather strap but it stretched and torn quite easily.

  • Beautiful

  • What was the price before the sale?

    • $409

  • +11

    Goddammit.

I don't need a new watch, I already have 2 (a Citizen Eco-Drive that I bought years and years ago, and an Edox that I got from my in-laws as a wedding gift also years and years ago). I only have 2 wrists, for crying out loud!

But this was too nice looking and too steep a discount to refuse, so I just ordered one. OzBargain is supposed to SAVE me money, instead I just spend nearly $400 that I wouldn't have if I'd never visited this damn site. Damn you, OzBargain! shakes fists at sky :P

    • +7

Old man yells at watch.jpg xdd

    • +1

If the missus thinks it's $400 well spent and likes it, you'll be fine. 🥺

She is going to say Yes to a Dress soon enough though!

    • +1

If she get's mad, just point at me and say "Well I could be like him and have 16 watches! At least I've only got 3!"

Enjoy the watch, it's a beautiful piece, particularly for this price.

      • +2

Hmm I think you just gave me a good angle to try with her, actually. "It's a beautiful piece… Just like you." That'll work, right? :P

        • Whether it will work or not, I can't tell, but it can't hurt can it?

        • She might ask you this: "Well, you have to choose either me or the watch. Which one?" XD

          • +1

@edfoo: Well, I'd probably have to choose her… as far as the watch goes, I've got 2 more :P

      • +2

It just arrived. You were right - it is beautiful :D

The green maybe not quite as pronounced as in the image there, although it varies depending on the light that's hitting it. But that just makes it match the case and wristband better anyway

        • Enjoy it, even if you have to do it surreptitiously :)

  • +4

    hardlex :'(

    • Exactly

    • I already own a cocktail presage.
      Has a minor scratch.
Just knowing its a hardlex stops me from buying another.
Il probly go Seiko Cotura next as they have sapphire

      • Did you try and polywatch to buff the scratches?
Apparently that stuff good. Agree though, for RRP of $700 it should be sapphire crystal. By the time you change the strap and upgrade the glass it adds up.

Plenty of good microbrands and homages that offer a bit more these days

  • +2

I have this piece, the dial is even nicer in person and the movement I get for the 4R35 is around +/- 6-7 seconds a day so not as bad as some others with the same movement. The stock strap is horrible btw so definitely change to something nicer.

    • Which strap did you end up picking? And any major scratching issues?

    • I sent my Oris Aquis off for a service this year. Took at least 8 weeks and the plonkers could only get it to +8.6 s/day.

Don't wear it every day so doesn't really matter, but a good local watch guy in town claims he could have got it to 2 sec (but oris don't have authorised dealers and do them all in Melbourne)

  • +1

I love the look of this however I already have a green Seiko cocktail presage.

  • People are getting suspicious about how many watches I own…

    • Just hang them inside trench coat and start selling them, haha

  • +1

What's the power reserve on this movement, please?

    • +1

      41h according to specs.

      • Thanks for the info :)

  • +2

There are some beautiful "Cocktail Time" inspired dials in the affordable Presage series now.

The Youtube video link above, took me down the rabbit hole of the "hemp leaf green" SPB169 and "Matcha" SRPF41J1 Presages also in a green dial.

If I didn't have the new version of the actual Cocktail time Presage SRPB43J, then I would be very tempted by this and the other two green dials. All absolutely beautiful on video, likely to be even better in person.

  • +3

never wore a watch.. never liked the idea.
    but just bought one.
    TIME will tell…

    • Nice one. Pun worthy of Dad joke status to start a Friday morning as well :-).

Don't really wear many of my large collection while WFH, but once you get the bug, with a beautifully mesmerising dial like this, can become an addiction pretty quickly.

Once it arrives, let us know if you think it was worth it.

I've posted a few watch reviews in OzB threads that were to blame for me buying them - always useful to have reflections recorded for posterity, so other OzBers can search what someone thinks of the piece in real world use, just in case they come up for a decent price again.

I have actually sent one watch back, where the dial and other aesthetics just didn't quite match up to my expectations and against stiff competition of watches in my collection already (has to be subjectively better than watches I already own or fill a niche in my collection that I haven't already satisfied). Starbuy were very good with the return, just had to pay return shipping for full refund. Being able to make return shipping claim with Paypal is helpful if ever sitting on the fence for a purchase decision.

      • +1

Haha… had the kids yesterday so still 'recovering' lol.
After writing this post actually went back see if could cancel… (had 5mins)…

This was purely impulse as it looked good and also I'm using money that's in a way sentimental… nostalgia some sort.
Will post my experience and thoughts after month or so… albeit be a layman impression.
        Happy Friyay..

  • Beautiful wrist watch

  • As recommended by Matt Farah

  • +3

The hardlex glass breaks the deal for a presage watch…

    • I see what you did there

  • +1

The Negroni SRPE41J version is also at $389. The red dial is stunning.

  • Man that’s one fine looking watch

  • Looks like its sold out when trying to checkout

  • Watches are wrist heroin….

    • +1

Doesn't do anything for me, but I find the fascination people have with watches fascinating..

  • As an aside,I had to return my Alpinist SPB123J as it was losing a couple of minutes a day since I bought it in October last year.Starbuy sent it to Seiko for attention more than two months ago now.
    They must be awful busy…..

  • +1

such a good looking piece. its a shame they don't use Sapphire Crystal on these watches, then this Quartz watch get a Sapphire glass https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-quartz-mens-watch-sur449p/?

    • +1

Agree, it's the one thing you should expect for $300-500 + watches.

It's probably possible to swap it out for sapphire crystal

      • Seiko watch? yeah thats gonna cost you another one of these watches to swap out

        • Hmm probably not worth it unless you can find the exact glass, but can get those watch repair/tool kits that are pretty extensive from Ali express and Amazon fairly cheaply.

I was thinking of this video where Jody did some great cheap upgrades to a Casio duro.

          https://youtu.be/aIgoLwzR_0U

        • Cost about $60 for a crystal and it's pretty simple to replace if you have the tools (can get some relatively cheap as well) or have a watch guy who will do it for you.

          • @Jasonissm: $60 for sapphire glass and extra for a watchsmith to fit? That's not a bad price at all. Might consider if the stock glass get scratched up.

            • @edfoo: Doing a quick search. I can't find any website that sells Sapphire glass for this watch.

  • +6

Thank god its out of stock. I was about to pull the trigger.

    • Me too. Thank god. But I might pull the trigger if it goes back on sale. The only thing that made me go hmm and ahh was that fact that for a 695 MSRP, no sapphire glass is a huge head scratcher.

      • Not having sapphire glass was really put me off … fir me watches has to sapphire glass!! I learned it hard. 🙁

        • Same, but I wonder if there are any dress watches of this calibre that also has a sapphire glass

      • Oh no, the other colors are on sale now!!° noooooooo!

  • This reminds me how I lost my Seiko alpinist sarb017 last Xmas. :-(

    • +1

Sorry for your loss. The alpinist was one sexy lady

      • I can't forget that watch. I'm looking at a SPB121J as a replacement. Minor details are different, probably in a worse way but the market value on the sarb017 is hard to justify.

    • Ouch, how did you lose it?

  • Wow you can almost get a Steinhart for the RRP of this thing…
