  • Then they can pretend it is brand new after you return it and sell it as such.

"The store will then apply for an RA as per normal procedure "
GOes back to Nokia based on this…

  • return rate is pretty low on these offers mainly because:
    1. people forget and miss cut off
    2. people couldn't be bothered going back to store
    3. people lose a manual or the box

    • same with cash back offers and such. why do you think companies offer a cash back and not just take it off the price tag

It's actually a really good OS.

  • +3

Lets keep the discussion off alternative OS's please - Use forums to discuss please, no more starting off topic OS wars in main thread.

    • -2

I am rather surprised about your reaction here. First of all: mattgal's post above was non unpublished, and that one indeed is rather unhelpful as evidenced by the many negative votes. Did mine get any negative votes before you unpublished it?

My post merely pointed out that the product under discussion comes with a non-mainstream OS (0.4% market share). Which explains the usefulness of the 30 day trial period - and also why they do it, they have to convince people to give it a try.

Except for the OS - which I did not judge in any way since I have no experience with it - this phone is indeed inferior in almost every aspect to the alternative one I mentioned. Half the RAM, half the flash memory, slower CPU and higher price.

      • +4

It is pointless comparing RAM and CPU on devices running different platforms.

      • @TT

mattgal got the votes they deserve. It wasnt a comparison, we have no idea which os they prefer.

as for the reasons its pretty obvious to everyone why they are doing this.

What we are trying to do is take away anything that can start the os wars. you did make a statement about which was the better. While not overly strong, its the type that can get a reaction. lets leave it at that. Again go to the forums have a great discussion there, everyone can have a say.

Its a safety thing. Nothing personal, its not that serious, but we draw a line somewhere to stop the silly games that start, even with seemingly "innocent' remarks. The policing of this has stopped many of the flame wars on this site which just gets people worked up rather than enjoy their stay.

Serious trolling earns a temporary ban. This didnt happen in this situation,

        • Seems to me that any comment that compares W7 mobile in a good light against Android gets removed but comments like

          windows? eeewwww!!

          are appropriate?

Comments for Android being 'better' can stay, but justifications in reply why W7 mobile doesn't need the same hardware requirements are inappropriate?

If its a 'safety thing' why not remove all the stupid comments? You just seem to be leaving all the pro-Android ones…

        • Oh dear as a mod I have been accused in the past of being anti android, even Anti IOS, so I guess this is a "refreshing" change.

Mattgal got hammered by the community so there was no need. It also as I said before didn't mention another OS.

and BTW the post we are talking about didn't recommend windows, I think you might be confusing two different posts

Again take these pro anti discussions off line

The true OzB interpretation of this deal: Free Phone Rental

    Lumia 800 = $627

Take overseas, claim back GST, refund phone = $627/11 = $57 free money

    • +7

Buy 11 of them and get a free phone.

    • omg!!!!! genius

    • Real genius.

I want see the face of the sales person when presented a TRS stamped receipt. lol.

    • LOL i dont think that'll work… sure you'll get your GST but when you come back from your oversea trip to return the phone with TAX REFUND stamped receipt I doubt Harvey Norman would give you back full refund of the phone? haha

EDIT: lol zeroxp beat me to it :D

My comment was a little joke, but since you are taking it seriously, here is what you need to do to pull off the trick.

HN receipts are in triplicates (and that's why they persist in using those dot-matrix printers). If you ask the cashier, s/he will give you the top white one and the middle pink one to keep. I did this with their 2-for-1 laptops and cameras deals last year. To get your free money, use the white receipt to claim GST and use the pink receipt for the refund.

While I give you 100+++% bargain points for this clever idea, and its great fun to consider this "free" money, if the tax department does some data matching - ie when HN claims back the GST on this transaction and twigs to what you have done, it might be classified as a punishable offence. A litle risky for such a small gain.

        • Ozpete is absolutely right: Do not play games with the ATO. They guard their tax sources vigorously and they have no sense of humour.

This website "OzBargain" is bad. I cannot find a claim box for my accumulated 100+++% Bargain Points and there is nothing you can exchange for them. I will never deal with this company again. :-)

Dont blame us I think the ATO removed it after the last budget…. retrospectively ;)

    • it may works.. you dont really have to show your original receipt to claim the gst @ the airport.

With the prices ($378 and $627), it is unlikely people will rush to Harvey Norman and try them out. Harvey Norman won't care if you return them (they will simply return to Nokia Australia).

While Lumia 800 might be one of the fastest Windows Phone 7.5 phones on the market, it is still a single core phone (simply cannot compete with dual core phones).

Lets not try and open that can of arguments ;) Its bound to start a fight…

  • Will they insist on refunding to the same card that you paid with? If not, reward points scheme ahoy!

    1) Buy a Lumia
    2) ???
    3) Profit

Step 2 revealed: copy the receipt, claim the purchase as a tax deduction.

  • i loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this site..and all the members…..I feel I have become a little smarter post becoming a member..Thanks.

  • Great offer really. A free mobile for (almost) a month. Only cost really is the hassle of returning it. And I guess there's always the risk you end up losing or breaking it and won't get the refund. Quite tempted to try the Lumia 800, although I have already tested Windows Phone with a LG E900 and was a bit disappointed with it.

    • If you buy it with a major credit card, you are probably already insured against that.

  • What will be the definition of "good condition"? Apparently I will not spend 40AUD on a case just to try a phone for 30 days…..

  • Can I suggest to go for Samsung Omnia W instead? It has a Super AMOLED, front facing camera and slightly larger battery capacity. And cheaper than the Lumia 800 too. MobiCity selling $489. Or if you're daring enough you can get below $400.
